Circe woke up to the gentle rays of the morning sun filtering through her bedroom curtains. She stretched and yawned, her light brown hair tousled from sleep. As she swung her legs over the edge of the bed, her bare feet touched the cool wooden floor, grounding her for the day ahead.
Dressed in her favorite bohemian-style attire, Circe made her way downstairs to the kitchen, where the enticing aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air. Her adoptive mother, Amelia, greeted her with a warm smile, her cup of steaming coffee in hand.
"Good morning, my little raven," Amelia said affectionately, using the term of endearment she had for Circe due to her interest in Wicca. She kissed her on the cheek and placed some bread into the toaster.
Circe smiled, her pale skin glowing in the soft morning light and she floated towards the bathroom. She took a moment to center herself, closing her eyes and silently reciting a few affirmations. With a delicate touch, she traced the outline of the pentacle pendant around her neck. This was the same necklace that was clasped in her fist when she was a baby, left on the doorstep of an orphanage, with nothing but a dusty pink blanket and a note that read "Please protect her" and her full name, including her real surname. Which she could trace back only as far as her birth mother's mother. She massaged the pentacle between her thumb and forefinger, invoking the power it held. The ritual gave her a sense of stability and purpose, connecting her to the energy of the universe.
Just as she finished, the ringing of the telephone interrupted the peaceful atmosphere. Amelia hurriedly answered the call, her voice filled with concern. "Yes, I understand. Thank you for letting me know," she said before hanging up.
"Circe, darling, I'm afraid I need to go into the office" she pouted at her daughter. "And you," tapping her on the nose, " are going to be late for school," Amelia informed her. "The bus will be here in a few minutes."
Panicked, Circe quickly grabbed a slice of toast and sloppily smeared some butter upon its surface, wincing at how hot it was, being fresh out of the toaster and all. She stuffed it into her mouth whilst her blue eyes widened with the hot toast burning her mouth and the realization that her morning routine had taken longer than expected. She darted out the door, hastily slinging her backpack over her shoulder.
Outside, the garishly yellow school bus waited, its engine rumbling impatiently. Circe dashed toward it, hoping to catch the last available seat. As luck would have it, she spotted her best friend, Finn, saving a spot for her. His shaggy blond hair and mischievous grin instantly brought a sense of familiarity and comfort.
Breathless, Circe slid into the seat next to Finn, her heart still racing from the mad dash. "Thanks for saving me a seat," she panted, attempting to catch her breath.
Finn chuckled, his hazel eyes twinkling. "No problem, Circe. I couldn't let anyone else have the privilege of sitting next to the coolest in town." He said, sarcastically.
She playfully nudged him, the worry of her tardiness fading away as their easy banter filled the air. The bus pulled away from the curb, and Circe turned her attention to her first day back at high school after the summer break.
As they arrived at Willowbrook High, the buzzing excitement of students filled the hallways. Circe and Finn weaved through the crowd, their laughter echoing amidst the cacophony of chatter and locker doors slamming shut. It felt good to be back, surrounded by familiar faces and the promise of new adventures.
In each classroom, Circe's anticipation grew, wondering what the new academic year had in store for her. The teachers launched into their introductory speeches, their voices blending into a dull symphony of information. Circe's mind wandered, distracted by the undercurrent of mysticism that seemed to hum beneath the surface of her existence.
Little did she know that this day, the beginning of the school year would mark the start of something extraordinary. The supernatural events lurking just beyond her perception were about to unfold, setting in motion a chain of events that would forever alter her life.
As the final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, Circe found herself caught up in the tide of students rushing toward the exit. Finn fell into step beside her, his presence grounding her amidst the sea of eager faces. Unbeknownst to them, their shared journey would soon take them down a path riddled with magic, love, and the delicate balance between their intertwined destinies.
The world was about to reveal its hidden wonders to Circe, and as she stepped out into the afternoon sunlight, she felt an inexplicable energy tingling in the air. Something extraordinary was on the horizon, and she couldn't wait to uncover the secrets that awaited her, both within herself and in the world that lay just beyond her reach.
