“Don’t talk to me, don’t even look at me, at school, we do not know each other.” Jesse began telling his younger cousin as he drove them both to school. Grabbing the rear view mirror, Jesse quickly turned it to himself to make sure his swept black hair looked exactly right. Once he was satisfied, he turned back around and faced the road once again. "And whatever you do, do not, under any circumstances, tell other people we are related." He warned her.
"American high schools sound so serious." His cousin, Alice scoffed sarcastically at him.
“It's not like how you see them on TV. This is real, not some ‘High School Musical’ bullshit. There is a pecking order at Summerfield High, okay? I don't want people knowing I'm related to the cast of Downton Abbey.” Jesse mocked, referring to the fact that his cousin sounded like she came out of 18th century London. He rolled his eyes as he tightened his grip around the steering wheel.
“You make it sound as if American’s are nothing less than bloody cave men.” Alice said putting on an over exaggerated British accent.
“High school is completely different from that posh, rich, all-girls boarding school you went to in England.” Jesse groaned. “High school is full of hormonal teenagers with a bunch of anger issues and steroid problems.”
Alice sighed lightly to herself as she agreed to her older cousins demands. “Whatever.” She muttered to herself as she turned away to face out of the window, her eyes glazing over as Jesse sped the car up the hill, passing other students on their way.
“I’m just saying; you haven’t been to a public/state school before. None of the other students or teachers are going to give you special treatment just cause' you started half way through the school year.” Jesse added as he looked down to Alice’s large pair of headphones that she nervously played with in her hands. “And put those away. You wanna be known as a freak in this school as well, brace-face?”
“I need my headphones, and I got my braces off last month; you can’t keep calling me that!” Alice complained talking back in her normal British voice again.
Suddenly, Jesse sharply pulled over the car, tires screeching. Alice looked around confused at the empty street. “Are we here?” She asked sitting up straight in the car seat.
“No, but get out.”
“…You what?”
“I’m not rolling up to school with you in my car. Get out and walk.” Jesse put it bluntly as he looked around making sure no other students could see him giving this loser a lift, let alone realising they were actually related.
“I don’t even know where the school is!” Alice complained.
But Jesse did not care that it was her first day at a new school in a new country. Instead, he reached over Alice’s lap and opened the car door for her. “Just go up the hill. I’m sure you’ll figure it out.” He smugly smiled before physically pushing her out of the car.
Alice stumbled out of Jesse’s red Toyota and nearly fell face first onto the pavement. “Hey!” She yelled as she tried to stabilise her feet. As Alice turned back to face her cruel cousin, she was taken by surprise as her book bag came hurdling towards her face. She put her hands up to protect herself but the heavy flying object still managed to hit her square in the forehead, making her fall to the floor.
“Remember, not a word about knowing me." He warned her one last time. "Later, loser.” Jesse chuckled as he slammed the car door shut and sped off into the distance.
Sighing heavily, Alice scrambled herself back onto her feet. She dusted off the dirt on her dark blue jeans before grabbing her bag off the floor. “What a twat.” She muttered to herself, throwing her bag onto her back and walking up the hill towards school.

Summerfield; the local over crowded high school which would be Alice’s new home fore the next couple of months. Alice stood silently by the main entrance to the school as she looked over her new environment. It was exactly how she pictured it; there were large stone steps leading up to the doors that let the students into the primary building. The main entrance was a large foyer that led to different hallways in different directions, they even had a large set a staircases that sat at the dead centre. It was noisy. American high-school students filled the hallways chatting and joking to one another about their spring break. It was too noisy. This high school was much larger than her previous secondary school she attended back in England; but she guessed everything in America was bigger and better. Over to the left of her, Alice could hear a couple of female students laughing with one another, to the right of her, she could hear the slamming of lockers. There was even a kid crying in the corner…
Alice didn’t want to waste anytime waiting around, she needed to find her new locker and somehow find her home-room class before the bel rang. So before she wondered aimlessly around the unfamiliar school she opened up her backpack and pulled out the small welcome packet. The packet had been sent to her in the mail before the start of school and had all the information Alice needed about her locker and classes.
Coming down the main set of stair cases, came the loud booming of footsteps. As Alice looked at the piece of paper which all her class info on it, her attention was taken away as other students around her began to whisper and all turn their sights to the group of boys casually walking down the stairs.
“Watch out, it’s Thomas.” A girl close by gasped loudly as she pointed up the stairs and squealed over to her friend. Out of curiosity, Alice too turned around and looked up to the group of boys.
A band of boys walked down the stairs, taking their time. As other students passed them on the stair case, one of the boys at the front of the group began to push people to the side. “Move out my way!” Thomas, the boy with brights dyed red hair shouted at the younger students, grabbing them by their collars and shoving them into the railing.
“Urgh, he is such a pig.” The girl from before whispered over to her friend.
“I dunno, I think he is kinda cute.” Her friend sniggered back to her.
Thomas had large brawny shoulders that lead to his over sized stocky arms that rest apart from the rest of his body, making him look even bigger than he already was. The mean boy took pleasure in bossing people around, being much larger in size and weight than other students, it gave him the illusion that he could throw people about. Alice couldn’t help but notice all the boys were wearing the same large necklace with a pendant of a black raven with its wings spread out on either side. What was that all about?
The second girl turned away from the stairs then gasped as she faced the opposite direction and saw another group of boys enter the main foyer from a dark corridor. “It’s Aiden!” She squealed.
“Now he is cute.” The first girl nudged her friend pointing over to him.
“What do you think is going to happen when Thomas sees him?”
“I dunno, but it cannot be good.”
“Maybe we should leave.” The second said grabbing her friend by the arm.
But the first girl refused. “No, I wanna stay.”
The boy to whom she was referring to, stepped forward out from the shadows on the other side of the foyer. The first thing Alice noticed about him was that he was wearing an oversized white jumper, the hood just about hiding his silver hair. Aiden was tall, much taller than other boys his ages. He had just a long arms and legs but he didn’t come across as lanky. Even with his tall stature, the boy had wide upper torso that pointed in giving him a slim a waist and broad shoulders. As Alice watched the boy walk over, she noticed that he was followed by a number of other boys also wearing the same white hoody as him.
“Would you look who it is?” A loud booming voice called over all the students. Thomas stood on the stair case looking out to the group of white hooded students. “It’s the Phantom Pussy’s.” He laughed with his friend
From across the room, Aiden looked up Thomas as he bounced his way down the last couple of steps. Whispers that circulate around the room were quickly brought to silence while everyone watched the intense interaction of the two groups. A cold chill swept through the school as the two boys come face to face with one another.
“And if it isn’t the Raven Rejects.” Aiden smiled back at them, referring to their large ghastly necklaces.
This comment infuriated Thomas, but he first pretended to laugh, turning round to his friends and laughing with him. Aiden too began to laugh along, also turning to his crew and laughing. Through the fake laugh, Thomas hoped this distracted Aiden enough…
Thomas quickly drew back his fist and quickly jabbed it towards Aiden’s face. Alice audibly gasped. Aiden jolted his head to one side, letting Thomas’ fit miss him by a inch. But Thomas didn’t wait around to make his next move.
The boy with the bright red hair, started swinging his fists towards the hooded boy’s face; but Aiden didn’t seemed fazed. He managed to dodge or deflect every hit that the other student threw at him, without even breaking a sweat. Where the hell where all the teachers during this? By now the rest of the students who stood around either wearing white hoody’s or raven necklaces were now at each other’s throats. Around the main entrance formed a crowd to watch the fight. “Fight, fight, fight!” They all began to encourage the two students.
Without hesitation, Alice quickly grabbed her headphones, placed them over her ears to block out any loud noises and turned herself away from the fight. She could not believe what she was witnessing on her first day- before lessons had even started! Jesse was right; she had no idea what high school was going to be like! “What the bloody hell is this kind of school!"
