"The roots, they are like fingers trying to grab the earth, but much bigger. The bark, which is slightly above the roots is huge but uneven, like a pile of rocks. Then there are branches protruding out, in all different directions, like how the pencils fall when released from their tips, but stuck mid-air. Most of all, leaves, as countless as the hair on your head and wow are they beautiful..." He was admiring the large oak in front of him.
"Beautiful... Am I beautiful?" she asked.
"Calista...why would ask that?"
"I can never see my reflection, I don't even know what is beautiful... Please. Tell me, how do I look like? Am I beautiful?" she pleaded. He stared into her wandering, confused eyes, gazing at everywhere and anywhere, yet nowhere in particular.
"I wouldn't have you any other way. You are perfect." He smiled.
"Do you mean that? Even though I cannot tell you how you look like? Even though I can never look you in the eye to tell you I love you?" She asked.
"That does not matter. None of it matters." He held her hand tightly to ensure her that he means what he says.
"Well, it does matter, at least to me..." she whispered to herself. It really hurt him to hear her say that. He made an internal vow to help her find a way out of this.
"So... can you help her see again?" He asked the young man on the floor.
"Tell me Castiel, why are you doing this?" The lad asked with a quizzical look on his face.
"Because I love her..." Castiel responded.
"You do know the price right? An eye for an eye?" The young boy tried to convince him not to do it.
"I know very well the cost of using magic." He closed his eyes and imagined a world without them, a world of how she have lived.
"I'm warning you, this will not end well." The boy sang.
"I am sure of it. Just do it!" Castiel commanded.
"Very well then," the boy shrugged as he took out a long instrument. It was like any others, neither made of wood nor stone, but of a shiny material, something that looked like a liquid, yet it retained its shape. He started playing it...
It was mesmerizing, Castiel was immediately drawn by the sound it made that he did not realized the pack of rats that was materializing behind him. He was blowing into one hole and beautiful music was coming out of the other, enchanting him completely with its slow and smooth melody.
Slowly, rats started scampering up Castiel's legs, threatening to cover him completely. The young boy then stopped playing the instrument and cried. Out of the sudden, the rats were sent into a frenzy, a bloodthirsty, ravenous frenzy. For some reason, they only clawed their way up his body to feast on his eyes. The young kid was looking away, he could not swallow down the gruesome scene he just caused.
Castiel's screams for mercy were blood-curling, and loud too, it could be heard from mountains away. It only lasted a few seconds before it died off and left an unconscious and blind Castiel on the wooden floor.
"The deed is done..." the boy whispered into Castiel's ear.
"It's a miracle!"
"May the Gods be praised!"
"She can see!"
A huge collation of voices from every corner, all having an opinion about how it couldn't have been done, yet there they were. Calista was slowly adjusting to her new eyes, slightly disoriented when she first had them, powerful she felt now. Everything she have ever dreamed about has come true. The beautiful oak tree that Castiel described, she saw. It was so overwhelming.
"Castiel! Is that you?" the guard immediately rushed to his aid. Catching the limping meat sack. He was barely recognizable as human.
"Castiel! Who did this to you? Tell me! I'll summon all my men and we will slay whoever caused you such misery!" The guard was shouting into Castiel's ear, unknowingly causing him more pain.
"Calista? Where is she?" a weak voice coughed.
"Uhh... she's in town. Are you sure you want to see her in this condition? You need a doctor first!" the guard was concerned for his friend.
"Yes Arthur, bring me to her." Arthur did as his friend asked, there was time to avenge him and bring down his attacker later.
"Who is this? Ugh, Castiel didn't tell me of such hideous things living around here." Calista was close to puking at the repulsive sight of what seemed to be a blind, torn, battered man.
"Calista... This is Castiel," Arthur whispered, shocked by how harsh those words sound. The tattered creature that was claimed to be Castiel crawled towards Calista.
"Do you still love me?" he asked, that's the only thing he needed to hear to be happy.
After taking a long glance, Calista scoffed and turned away. "Get that revolting thing away from me." With that, she walked off.
"I hope you enjoy your eyes. Before they were yours, they were mine." He shouted back, she just ignored him and strutted off.
