Ronald Willoughby sat back in his lounge chair watching the Super Bowl in his office. His favorite team was winning and he could already taste the money that was soon to appear at his front desk. Ronald was a tall athletic man in his late forties, had promising looks for a man his age and had been married for over fifteen years. Fifteen years of marriage however, didn’t stop him from having fun with “his” lady friends. In fact his mind was on a certain blonde haired woman he had met on a business trip. After talking with her for ten minutes he had won her heart and shortly after, had won some of her bedtime. As the Patriots scored yet another touchdown, effectively securing victory, his phone ring. Ronald knew who it was and picked up on the first ring.
“Yes? Oh yes we did discuss that didn’t we? From the looks of things I’d say the score is hmmm, 44-13? Tom Brady sure is something isn’t he, a true hero.” Silence. Apparently the one on the other end didn’t want to continue the conversation anymore. Who cares? Ronald continued. “So then $440,000 it is then and I’ll expect to see it in my office tomorrow by two sharp.”
He placed the phone back in the receiver before the other man could speak. Ronald turned off the television on the third quarter of the game. Now that the Patriots had given him more money, it was time to go home and have the dinner his wife of forty-two had prepared for him. His phone rang before he exited his office. He walked back toward his desk and answered it.
“Hello Holly, what is it?”
“Hey daddy, I need some money to go out with Rachel tonight. We’re going to see Green Serendipity tonight and-”
“Holly I only have ten dollars to spare you I’m sorry,” he said, emotion totally absent in his voice.
“Dad that’s a load of crock and you know it!” Holly said. “You’re sitting on all that money at your job and whenever Gary asks for money, you never hesitate to give it to him, regardless of how much it is! Why do you always play favorites!?”
“I don’t have time for your trash talk Holly,” Ronald said seethingly. “You’re eighteen now if you want to go out then you go out. Ask Gary for money if it bothers you so much!”
With the phone placed back on the receiver, Ronald decided that dinner could wait. Besides there was no problem in the world that money couldn’t fix and Holly would come around soon. All he needed to do was flash a grand in front of her face and she would melt in his arms, telling him how much she loved him and appreciated him. Everyone has their price, but that time would come later. For now she’ll ask her naïve brother of hers and he’ll be so happy to help her in her hour of need. With that thought in mind, he would head down to the casino and met with some friends.

Two days after his night at the casino, Ronald’s secretary walked into the office. She wasn’t good but she wasn’t bad either, considering that she never hesitated to give him what he needed. Perhaps the two could arrange a little something tonight after work?
“Here’re your papers sir,” she said. Ronald could not help but notice the guilt in her tone.
“What is the matter Justine?” he inquired. Justine Hall, a woman of thirty-three remained silent for a moment. Finally, when she felt his eyes looking over her body she answered.
“Sir, I can’t continue this affair anymore. I just don’t feel right about it. Your wife is an amazing woman and she doesn’t deserve the kind of treatment you’re giving her. Also, I’ve noticed that my pay has been reduced to the starting pay of minimum wage. I was making eleven an hour what happened?”
Ronald didn’t hesitate to answer.
“I had to cut back on expenses Justine you know how that is. Also, correct me if I’m wrong but did I just hear you tell me what my wife deserves?”
Silence. Justine couldn’t bring herself to answer she was frozen in fear of this man. He walked casually towards her, ignoring the fact that she was shaking where she stood. Ronald tilted her chin until her eyes met his.
“You know you liked it,” he said. He then planted a kiss on her mouth. “If you didn’t, you’re fired, simple as that. Pack your things and leave please.”
Justine didn’t need telling twice. With tears streaming down her cheeks she rushed from the office and was never heard from again.
“I needed to get rid of that bitch anyways,” he thought to himself. At eleven an hour Justine was sucking his bank account dry and he needed it support himself and his family. The other day his wife told him that they were going to have another sailor on deck and the news struck him in his very being. Having two children was hard enough but three?! He had needed some time to think so he played the role of the caring husband and told her how proud he was of her. After that it was to the casino. The casino! The thought struck him like a thunderbolt. The other night when he was there he played in several games of poker. It didn’t take long for the man to clean him out of the money he had on him. After a few more games, the man had won himself a check with the amount of $55,000 with Ronald’s signature. His son Billy was supposed to have that money for college this year, now he would have to tell him a fib, just as he had done in the past. He didn’t want to spend the $440,000 just yet. He walked over to his desk, picked up the phone and dialed a number, he knew who could help him in his disparate hour. The phone was picked up on the second ring.
“Hey how are you doing?”
“Hey Ron, what do you need?”
“I have a bit of a problem right now,” Ronald said, expecting his friend to know what he was talking about. He didn’t have to wait long for his response.
Ronald heard a breath of agitation on the other end. This routine was getting old and Ronald couldn’t have agreed more.
“Ronald not again, it’s surprising your wife hasn’t found out about this yet you’re getting us into trouble here,” he said, his voice very low that Ronald could barely make out what he was saying.
“You know that I always pay you back George, don’t you bail out on me.”
“Ronald you have, had, more money then you ever needed. Your greed has gotten my family involved the last time I lent you money. I didn’t say anything then but I’m saying something now and my answer is no.”
Ronald clenched his fists together to keep from yelling into the receiver. George called himself his best friend but now he was leaving him in his blight. Last he checked best friends helped each other in times of need! Ronald decided to try for round two.
“George whenever you needed help I was always there to help you, now that I need help you’re nowhere to be found.”
“I’m not the one with gambling and sex issues Ron! I’m sure Vanessa would be devastated if she found out about your secretary and the other four women you slept with, especially since she’s pregnant with your third child. I’m sorry Ron, but the last time I helped you, I was visited at work by three men who knew about my own affairs. It made me realize that I need to-”
Ronald hung up the phone. If George wasn’t going to help him then he’d find another way of paying what was due, but the question was how to go about it? There was a ring on his phone. He picked it up angrily.
“What?!”
“Hello Mr. Willoughby, is that anyway to answer the phone?” Ron’s mouth went dry as a dessert when he realized who the voice belonged to. “I trust you have payment yes?”
“What payment?”
“Ronald my friend,” the man’s voice was that of a grandparent praising his grandchild. “The super bowl remember? $440,000? Why do you think you never saw it appear on your desk?”
“Last I checked the Patriots won the game. They were ahead in the third quarter.”
“Then you didn’t watch the game well enough. The Panther’s made a miraculous comeback in the third and fourth quarters Ron my boy. The score was 50 to 44.”
Ron’s heart sank in the pit of his stomach. Why did he wait until now to tell him this?
“I waited until now to give you some time to collect the money, but when you didn’t call I got worried so here I am checking up on you. Do you have it?”
“Look,” his voice began to stammer. “I need some time two days wasn’t enough time.”
“Of course Ronald of course. How much time?”
“A week.”
“A week it is then. Today is Wednesday so next Wednesday you’ll have the money?”
“Count on it.”
“Very good. I’ll hear from you on Wednesday.”
Ronald hung up the receiver and swallowed hard. He didn’t know how he was going to pay off all of that money. If his wife found out about all of this then…no, he wouldn’t tell her. He would find a way to pay off his debt no matter what it took. All he needed to do was win more money at the casino, that was the solver of his current situation.

A week since the casino and things were looking grim. George had recently ceased contact with him and his daughter Holly had brought a man home to the house. Problem was the man didn’t share the same skin color as she did. Black was not one of Ronald’s favorites and he wanted to keep his family white, but that was the least of his concerns. Two days ago he was visited by two men, each standing seven feet tall. They reminded him that his payment was due on Wednesday and they left him with thinking to do on their way out.
“We understand that you have a bit of a…sexual problem,” one of them said. “I would hate to think what your wife would say if she found out.” Well Wednesday had come all too quickly and he hadn’t come up with the money. When his phone rang he screamed a loud. Without a secretary there was no one to hear him nor was there anyone to do his papers. He answered it on the first ring.
“Yes.”
“Daddy I’m going to be late coming home tonight. My new friend and I are going on a date.”
That…no, he wouldn’t say that word, not to her at least. He would try to talk her out of it, convince her that it wasn’t her best decision.
“Holly, have you considered your decision in this guy carefully?”
“What do you mean dad?” she asked quizzically. “He’s nice, caring, we share the same interests.”
“That’s good but the thing is the two of you are from different worlds.”
There was a silence over the phone, and then rage.
“I can’t believe this! You play favorites and now I find out you’re racist! You were all nice to him when I introduced you to him, you even shook his hand!”
“Holly, you can do a whole lot better than that! Besides the guy acts like he’s-”
He heard the dial tone before he could finish. Shortly after he heard the sound of his door opening and closing. He looked up to see the two men from before walking into the building and immediately his heart began to beat madly. He hadn’t even heard a car pull into the lot. They were dressed in nice blue suits, making Ronald wish he had the money to afford such nice attire.
“Hello Mr. Willoughby,” one of them said. “How’s life treating you?”
Ronald didn’t think of an answer so he said the next best thing.
“G…good, and yours?”
“Very good Mr. Willoughby. Holly she’s seeing a black kid isn’t she?”
Ronald allowed himself a long and weak inhalation before he answered.
“Yeah, just got done telling her that she should steer clear of that element.”
The men leered indifferently at Ronald.
“Why Mr. Willoughby, does it matter what color her man is?” the man asked. He didn’t wait for an answer. “Well that’s another conversation for another day. My question for now is, where’s the money?”
When Ronald was silent they took it as their cue to come closer. Ronald wanted to run, but fear dictated he remain seated as the man that did the talk, sat upon his desk. There was a picture of Ronald’s wife sitting upon the desk, which the man gingerly picked up and examined. The picture depicted a younger couple holding an infant Holly as they smiled happily at the camera.
“Ronald is your wife at home?” the mas asked as he calmly placed the picture back on the desk.
“Uh well she’s going out in a few minutes.”
“I think I can catch her. Victor here is going to keep you company while I have a chat with her,” he said. “It won’t take long I promise.” The tall figure of Victor was quickly by Ronald’s side. Ronald felt dwarfed by the size of these men and he thought of a book he had read awhile back. The Hobbit. The other man used Ronald’s phone to dial his house and soon his wife answered the phone.
“Hello Mrs. Willoughby. We don’t know each other and I know none of this is my business but I have something important to say to you. I’m a firm believer in staying faithful and I regret to inform you that your husband hasn’t been faithful.”
“Who the hell is this!?”
“Someone who wants justice served. Look inside of your mailbox, you’ll find the evidence you need, some of which concerns one Justine Hall, the secretary he fired not long ago. I wish you luck in dealing with what you find.”
He hung up the phone, leaving Ronald stunned at what had just occurred. His marriage was over he knew, but at the moment that wasn’t important. The man turned to Ronald once again.
“Now Ronald, about that money you owe us.”
“Look, if you just give me three more days I swear!”
“No, no, no times up my friend. You told my boss you’d have it today, well today’s today my friend, so cough it up.”
Ronald was terrified now. He knew what loansharks did to people who didn’t pay what was due. He should have listened to George long ago, now his addiction and greed had landed him here with these men. The man sighed when Ronald sat there shivering in silence.
“You know Victor doesn’t like racists. He’s been looking to hit something as he’s been quite angry lately.”
The statement saw Ronald gaze at the man wide-eyed. The silence of Ronald had died and birthed hurried words as he tried to convince these men of his word.
“Please guys,” Ronald now held up his hands in surrender, “all I need is three days please!”
Victor punched Ronald hard in the chest. The blow was so powerful that the wind in his lungs left Ronald and his knees buckled as he slumped to the floor gasping in pain. The other man was scrounging through Ronald’s belongings as Victor pummeled Ronald to the floor, ignoring the pleas to stop. The man approached Ronald who lay helpless on the floor.
“Ronald, I can’t seem to find what you owe us. Can you help me?”
Ronald didn’t, couldn’t reply. There was the sound of tires coming to screeching halt outside the building. The man looked outside to see three men marching toward the door. One of them carried a gun on his person.
“Victor!” yelled the man in alarm, but it was too late. The door shot open and when Ronald saw who it was he cursed himself.
“Oh, it looks as though someone beat me to it,” Justine’s father said. Relived, the man said; “You have some business with Ronald as well?”
“Ron here thinks that he can fuck and fire my daughter and not suffer the consequences!”
“Well,” the man said. He motioned for the ever-so-silent Victor to follow him outside. He shoved Ronald back onto the ground after lifting him bodily off the ground. “He’s all yours, we’ll have him after you’re done with him.” The man looked over to Ronald who was still coughing for air. “We’ll be seeing you around Ronald. You and your friends play nice.”
With that, the two men departed from Ronald’s building.

Three months after the incident Ronald was not the man he used to be. He couldn’t pay off his debts so his debtors took the task of ruining him. Justine and her family also made sure he paid by filing a lawsuit for emotional damage as well as sexual extortion. His immediate family had all lost respect for him and his wife denied him rights to visit their three-month old son. Gambling, sex, and one could say bullying had led him to his new life leaving in a motel room. His new job, a janitorial position made sure to have him clean the shit of those who couldn’t make it off the floor. He learned too late, that addiction has its consequences as well as the fact that it was too late to rectify the outcome.
