As he drove, Greg Masters was confused as to why his girlfriend Cathleen Richards was breaking up with him. Just two days ago she had broken up with him through text whilst he was working and had not stated the reason why. She had told him that he was not the man she thought he was and that they were through. Today Greg had twice tried calling her on his final break but was ignored. When her brothers texted him, warning him to stay away, it only fueled his resolved to get to the bottom of the matter.
Greg arrived at her house twenty minutes after leaving work. He stepped out of the car and marched toward her door. Upon not receiving an answer when he knocked, he texted her. He hoped that someone would answer soon because it was a chilling forty-nine degrees outside and he hated the cold. Winter was his least favorite season and he was thankful that spring was almost upon humanity once again.
Finally someone answered the door. Outside stepped a man as tall Greg. He stood over six feet tall and his auburn hair reached over his shoulder in a long single braid. His light brown eyes bored into him as he shut the door behind him, denying him the sight of his sister behind him.
“I don’t think you’ve got the memo,” he said darkly. “You’re through, now leave before I make you leave!”
Greg defiantly stood his ground, making his intent to see this through known. He dreaded a fight but if it came, he would fight for her sake. He glared at the man from where he stood.
“Not until I find out what this break up is all about! As you may already know Cathleen thinks I’m not the man she thought I was and judging by the text, I’ve done something I’ve no knowledge of!”
“Really now,” his arms were now folded revealing their muscular build. The tattoos depicting those of knives and other urban arts upon the light skin of his arms, shown that he was far more intimidating when he was angry but Greg was not afraid. He knew that he had the truth as his ally and rather or not they believed it would soon be seen.
“Yeah, really,” said Greg, withholding no determination. “You can call the police or beat the shit out of me if you want to Andrew, I really don’t care right now, but until I learn what it is that I’ve done I’m not leaving this spot. I’ll shiver out here if I have to.”
Greg found himself in Andrew’s strong grip as he was brought to eye-level with him. He felt his hot breath in his face and tiny droplets of saliva as he spoke through his gritted teeth.
“You’re going to stand there lie through your dirty teeth?! You’re really going to play the innocence card with me?!”
“As I said, I’ve no idea what is going here or what was said!”
The sound of the door opening caught the attention of both men. A plump woman of medium height stepped through the door and left it open a little ways. Her chestnut hair was cut short and her orbs, the same color as her brother’s, leered at Greg with accusing conviction.
“You have a lot of nerve showing up here,” Cathleen said to Greg who was still in the vice-like grip of her brother. Greg looked back at her matching the convicting glare she held towards him.
“I wouldn’t be here if I knew what was going on, so why don’t you educate me as what that might be!”
Cathleen became wide-eyed. The gall of this man to insult her intelligence and pretend that he was the innocent party only fueled her resolved to see that this man got what he deserved.
“Greg just go before we call the police ok!? I don’t have time for games and if you can’t even admit your guilt that only makes your more cowardly!”
“Last I checked trying to learn the truth wasn’t considered cowardly, so now that that’s off the table would you be so kind as to talk to me and tell me what this is about, alone!”
“Whatever you have to say to her you can say in front of me,” Andrew added grimly. Greg sighed in defeat.
“If that’s what it takes, but you’re gonna have to release me first.”
Andrew did so with a strong shove. Greg stumbled back a bit but quickly righted himself after catching his breath he began to speak much to Cathleen’s chagrin.
“So this text that I got from you, ‘You’re obviously not who you claimed you were, you had me fooled but no longer! We’re done, so long, and have fun with your new life!’ What did I do to deserve this?”
Cathleen turned her back towards Greg and angrily shook her head. She knew that she was going to have to break it to him in order for him to finally get it and she hoped that it would see him gone from her life for good. The last thing she needed in her twenty-fifth year of life was drama.
“Wow! Just wow,” she said turning to face him. “Alright Greg you want it here it is, I know that you’re cheating okay, I know!”
Greg covered his mouth and allowed her to see the aghast look about him. Cathleen allowed herself a smirk. She had caught Greg in his actions and now it was time to lay down judgment.
“Yeah, you’ve been caught Mr. Greg Masters! I don’t need rocket science to know when someone is having an affair!”
Greg couldn’t help but to feel empowered by the whole accusation. Apparently the entire situation wasn’t well-known and he prepared to fire his barrage of defenses.
“An affair?! Are you kidding me!? I have no idea how or where you got it in your head that I’m two-timing you but whatever you’ve heard was false!”
“I not only heard it Greg, but I saw it at the mall the other day! At the food court with Liz!”
Now it was Greg’s turn to show some anger, regardless of who was watching. He felt the eyes of both Andrew and Cathleen staring him down as he prepared his comeback.
“You know what Cathleen, I’m glad that you saw that because what you saw was your boyfriend being faithful to you!” he said giving a little rise to his voice. Cathleen opened her mouth showing disbelief as Greg continued. “As you know, I was helping her with programming during school hours. We hung out and you know this as well. I had no knowledge of her interest in dating me until she told me and do you want to know what I said to her?! I said Liz, I’m sure you’ll have no problem finding a man and I’m flattered that you’re interested in me but I’m taken. I’m with someone.”
Cathleen still had one more salvo to fire. She would tear down his defenses and prove his guilt then have Andrew send him on his way.
“I have reliable sources that claim otherwise Greg! If you’re as innocent as you fucking claim, then why haven’t you mentioned this to me sooner!?”
“For starters since you removed and blocked me from your Facebook I couldn’t. Also you ignored my texts and my calls. Secondly, these so-called sources of yours aren’t very reliable. I’d say they’re jealous of what you have in front of you and are trying to set up drama. And third, I thought since I turned her down that would be the end of it and you’re right, I should have told you and I apologize for that.”
Cathleen’s mouth went dry and the color disappeared from her face.
“You mean you…you didn’t sleep with her? You didn’t….”
“No.”
Cathleen couldn’t believe it. Liz was a slim, red-haired vixen in which men fawned over whilst she herself was merely plump and average looking. It would have made sense for Greg to chase after someone like Liz.
“Liz she…she’s obviously prettier than me. She looks like a supermodel and obviously has men following her in droves! You’re telling me you didn’t go for that versus me? I know I’m not as…”
“Cathleen stop it,” Greg said calmly. “It’s true that she’s a beautiful woman, perhaps more so than you. Yes it’s also true that she has a model’s body and she could have her pick of men. But if it’s one thing that she isn’t, she isn’t you. You may be big and plump, you may be short, and you may not be as beautiful as she, but at the end of the day, with all of these imperfections you may have, you’re still Cathleen and I would never choose any other woman because of something you aren’t. Nor would I betray for any other woman in the world. I’m with you and only you, no one else.”
Andrew, feeling guilty decided that it was time for him to go back inside the house.
“I’m going back inside Cath, will you be alright?”
She nodded, unable to find words. When he left, she embraced Greg in a strong regretful hug, her large arms wrapped around Greg’s waist. She buried her head in his chest and Greg felt her tears soaking into his shirt.
“I am so sorry I put you on trial like that!” she sobbed. “If you don’t want to continue this relationship I will totally understand I….”
Greg gently tilted her head and began wiping away the tears from her face.
“Don’t worry about it. It’s all over and done with now.”
“You forgive me?”
“As long as you forgive me.”
Greg kissed Cathleen as he hugged her tightly. He had missed the feel of her soft lips for two days and he was grateful to feel them once again. The kiss was long and when it ended, Greg held her in his eyes as color began to return to Cathleen’s features.
“I have a movie I’ve been saving for us,” she said. “Are you up for it or…?”
“Provided it with you that’s fine with me.”
Cathleen smiled. She opened the door and the two walked inside the house.
