Easter, the only day in Sarah's life that makes her feel disconnected with the world
Sure, it was a day of celebration, the day that marks the resurrection of Jesus, a day Sarah detest
She rolls her eyes at her step brother, annoyed at his constant need for attention, there are a lot of things Sarah hated, but Joshua seconds the list, Easter being the runner up
"Get the turkey, your dad said he is going to be back a little late" Sarah's step mother Stella said looking so exhausted, Sarah wasn't fond of her step mother either but surprisingly she didn't hate her as much as she hated her child
She stands up opening the kitchen door only to see her mother standing there covered in blood
She isn't terrified of the sight anymore, she is so used it, having constant hallucinations about her mother
It got to a point she didn't bother screaming or asking for help anymore, she just starts a conversation with her smiling mother
It happened four years ago, three days before easter, Sarah followed her mother to the grocery store to get prepared on the Easter holiday dinner
They got home but her mother had to go back cause she had forgotten to buy olive oil
her family has always being big on the festive period, they make a very big fuss every time, they prepare big meals, invite people over
Maybe if easter hadn't been so darn important, maybe if her mother hadn't forgotten to get the olive oil she needed for making pasta from scratch, if she hadn't been so particular about everything, if she hadn't insisted on going back that night, if she hadn't taken her brother who was just an infant
Sarah slept off on the couch having no idea her mother didn't come back home that night
She woke up the next day to her very panicked father shaking her awake
Sarah was twelve, had every idea what was going on, she was calm just sitting on the couch staring at the door, waiting for her mum to pop out of and tell her it was all a prank
Three days later, on the easter day, her mother's body turned up all brutalized, her infant brother wrapped in a gift wrapper placed on her mother's chest, the killer nailed the baby to her chest, her body against a wooden cross
Worst thing, Sarah found them
The memory never left her, the day kept on playing everytime she goes to bed, every corner she turns, every day of her life has been hell since then , her father took her to therapy, hoping that would help but it did nothing, the drugs they gave her caused more hallucinations
She saw her dead mother everyday, as a kid she screamed and screamed, but she grew into the trauma
Just having a conversation with her dead mother who just stare at her while nursing the infant
Sarah became a angry teenager after her father got married again just a year after the incident
Her step brother started calling her crazy after watching her talk to the air a few times, teasing her about it even in school, everybody in her school called her crazy, and she can't get a good and quiet day at home either, the boy bullies her every chance he got
What they didn't know in the little town of fortville was that was just the beginning, every year since that particular day, three days to easter a whole family disappears and turn out dead on Easter day nailed to a wooden cross
Families started moving but the few stubborn ones stayed, her father being one of them
People had told her she was lucky, a whole family get murdered every year but Sarah and her father were spared, if that was the definition of luck, she hated the luck she had, she hated being left behind
"Mum, it is that day again, and we still haven't found your killer, life is hard but my step mother is kind of nice"
Her mother's lifeless eyes just staring at her, she sighs annoyed that she can't get an answer back
She carried the turkey out of the oven dropping it on the kitchen counter "I would have called you but you can't eat it, you just stand there and look at me like a ghost" she chuckles at her self
She had to sit through the dinner just staring at her mother, her step mother trying her hardest to be nice to her, her step brother just itching to embarrass her and her father trying so hard to relate with her
"Get me my reading glasses, the mails are getting much" and they all find joy in sending her on errands when her step brother who was a year older than her just sits and watch
She didn't want to give any attitudes, so she just stands up to go to her father's room which she hasn't been in years, they drifted apart after he remarried
She entered the dark room, sighing as if she was confronting one of her demons
This was once her mother's room too
She put on the light walking to her dad's study table where he always leaves his study glasses, it was right beside the black polythene bag, she reach for the glasses
A gross wet liquid staining her hand, she retreated her hand inspecting it, it was a clot of blood
She covered her mouth, eyes wide, her curiosity got the best of her opening the polythene bag to discover a knife
'It must be the knife my dad killed the turkey with' she thought, the turkey was store bought, she wanted to think something, she wanted it to make sense
The attack weapon was said to be a kitchen knife, she was staring at a kitchen knife, maybe her father found it
She wrapped the knife back in the polythene nylon carefully placing it where she had taken it, she didn't want her father to notice she had just discovered he was the easter ripper
She made sure she was calm before she opened the door
She was trying her best, she couldn't help but wonder
Where did it all go wrong?, how did she not know?,
Well she was busy being crazy
he come home late three day to easter every single year since the incident, Sarah never paid attention to it
Her father killed her mother? Why?, She was filled with rage, anger, detest
She wanted to confront her father, she wanted to know why, she wanted to kill him
She handed the glasses hands shaking even though she was so composed trying not to make eye contact with her father, she was scared he would read her, she was scared she was walking on thin ice
She gave a small smile
"I think I should retire for the night, good night father goodnight Melanie" she omitted her step brother
She was visibly shaking hugging her self for support
She entered her room, silently screaming, why would he leave the murder weapon in such a open place, why would he send her into his room where she hadn't being for three years?, why?
Is he going to kill her tonight? Her first instinct was to call the police, her voice shaky as she informed the police she had a tip about the easter ripper
She didn't know the next course of action
She had no idea what to do, she can't lock her door, it had no lock, she quickly dragged her heavy table to her door
Barricading it
She was scared for her step mother and her step brother, she didn't like them but she didn't want them to die
She thought against going back downstairs but her conscience won, she dragged the table away from the door
Walking quietly down the stairs, her step brother already went to sleep "Melanie can I talk to you in the kitchen please" she asked, her father was sitting right across her "sure" she followed suit behind her "are you okay dear" her step mother asked "I don't know how to put this but however I do please you can't scream or attracts my father's attention" Melanie nods paying attention
"My father is the easter ripper" she dropped the bomb expecting a reaction from Melanie only to see a deadpan look, she knew?, They were in on it together
She couldn't process it, her heart contracted, she had trouble breathing, all this didn't measure up to the next thing that happened, Melanie stabbed her, she felt betrayed a single tear trailing down her face
She had been living with murderers
she fell unconscious, Melanie's smiling face being the last thing she saw
Sarah didn't want to give up, she didn't want to die without exposing her mother's murderer
Melanie threw water at Sarah which made her regain consciousness, Sarah looked around the room realizing it was their basement, she was tied to a chair, blood dripping, she wasn't alone in the room, the missing Marrier family were tied to chairs just like she was, the four of them were mutilated, all tortured but not dead, she was patiently waiting for the police hoping they come quickly
She was dizzy fighting to stay awake, she wanted to talk but her mouth was duct tapped shut
The police arrived , Sarah could hear, she wanted to shout, but she couldn't, she was fighting a losing battle trying to comfort the family, telling them it was all going to be okay, she was in better condition than they were, she was dying but she wasn't mutilated
She was only stabbed once,
Back upstairs the police were questioning the father, "we had a tip from your daughter that she knows something about the ripper, we just want to make sure she is okay" Sarah's father chuckled "I'm so sorry about that" he rubbed his face with his hand acting frustrated "she is having hallucinations again" the thing was that, it wasn't the first time the police have being to Sarah's house, she always called them after having her hallucination, she was labelled 'fortville crazy girl'
The police man just smiled "we just came to confirm she was okay and isn't attempting what she had last month" she called the police after taking the drug provided by her father, she was found ready to jump off the bridge "no she is okay, I'm so sorry about it" the police man just turned around
Walking away from the easter ripper without knowing he was the easter ripper, Sarah didn't survive, and the easter ripper tormented the town every Easter
