Meryl's POV:
It was past midnight when I arrived home; the traffic had been heavy. I intended to head straight to my room, but my tummy started to hurt.
"Oh crap! I forgot to eat lunch," I muttered as I dropped my office bag onto the sofa. Maybe that was why I felt my head was turning earlier. There was an urgent meeting at the office, so I had no choice but to attend it.
Despite my unease, I composed myself and went directly to my room to change. I unbuttoned my black and white striped polo shirt and swapped it for loose white shirt and black dolphin shorts, then tied my black, wavy hair into a bun.
Once changed, I descended the stairs, feeling the coldness of the tiles beneath my feet. It sent a tingling sensation up my spine, almost like someone was pinching the back of my heels. But my stomach pain worsened, prompting me to hurry to the kitchen.
I slowed my pace upon hearing footsteps behind me. I considered ducking into the storage room to my right, but it was too late—the lights flickered on, revealing my father standing before me, his gaze intense.
"You don't have work tomorrow?" he asked authoritatively. I felt a sudden nervousness. Fear shot down my spine. My dad is strict, but I know he's just a concerned father.
"I was supposed to eat, Dad," I paused. "But don't worry, I'll go straight to bed after."
He stared at me for a few seconds before walking away. After preparing my meal, I thought to myself that I should eat a little since I needed as much sleep as possible. However, it didn't work. I stopped eating when I felt full.
I washed my plates silently, being careful not to drop or move anything for fear that my mother might caught me. She's not a fan of overtime work, which I need to do for the company. Luckily, no one woke up to check the kitchen.
"Yeah, I'll bring it tomorrow," I said before ending the call. I had a brief conversation with my secretary, Athena, who was supposed to handle the event.
I sighed deeply, realizing how stressful and challenging my work is. My body was exhausted. I really wanted to take a nap, but I was still full, so I had no choice but to stay awake.
I picked up my phone from the study table near my bed. Maybe scrolling through Facebook would distract me. It had been a long, tiring day at the office, and I hadn't been able to check my social media lately. I walked towards the bathroom when I suddenly felt the need to pee.
Afterward, I climbed into my soft, king-size bed. Yes, a king-size one! I like having huge spaces because I tend to move a lot in my sleep. There were times in the past when I fell out of bed, which worried my parents since I'm their only child and they don't want me to get hurt. Fortunately, I haven't fallen out of bed in a long time. I'm a grown woman now, so I need to be careful and take care of myself.
When I felt that my stomach had digested the food, I positioned myself in bed and rested my head on my pillow. Feeling the room getting colder, I hurried to my closet to grab my pink hoodie and put it on. I even wore socks because it was really cold.
Christmas was fast approaching, evident from the cold breeze and dancing leaves outside our house, stirred by the strong winds of Hanging Amihan. Christmas decorations and accessories adorned the mall and small stores as I drove by.
I suddenly glanced at the clock hanging on my wall. A pain clenched my chest as I remembered that moment. 12:51—the exact time he said he didn't love me anymore. Our supposed twenty-fourth monthsary turned into a breakup.
How ironic, considering he was my friend. We had decided to give our relationship a try, but now it was clear it didn't work at all. I couldn't bear it.
Even now, I can't forget him. The sweet memories of our past still linger in my innocent mind. We had moments of joy and times of sadness. Love wasn't always easy, romantic, or happy. But what I loved most about him was when he promised not to give up on me, to always fight for us.
Yet, for the second time, it didn't happen. I still hope he'll come back, clinging to the possibility that maybe he just needed space. But my inner voice tells me to move on. Hot tears streamed down my cheeks, and numbness spread through my body. The pain overwhelmed my senses.
I worked hard to keep busy, but each night, it always ended the same—I cried. It became a cruel routine. Sometimes I woke up unintentionally, staring at my phone, hoping for his message. And when the clock struck 12:51, I was devastated.
