I couldn’t believe my eyes. She had cuts and a few bruises, a cast on her leg and arm, and worst of all, she was in a wheelchair.
Out of all my guesses for her not being there when I came, it definitely wasn’t that she was that badly hurt. Sure, the possibility of her being hurt crossed my mind, but I preferred to think that maybe she was at her friend’s house, or something.
I landed at the pond. I morphed into my Zemia, or human form. I reached into my pant pocket and pulled out a small bag. I tugged on the gold strings, and it opened. The shiny orange powder was sitting in the bag, glittering in all its glory.
I took a small amount of the beautiful material. “Zvēru zeme!” I yelled in Zemian, my home language. I threw the powder into the water, and a grassy passageway opened. I closed the bag and put it back in my pocket, then I walked as fast as I could through the passage.
I heard the Pop! of the passage closing as the water around me soon faded into white fields. There were no clouds in the light coral sky and the lilac sun shone brightly. A breeze hit me as I fully entered my homeland. I could see dark figures in the sky, and I saw a mama Squike and a drait of babies. A Squike was a small beast with two furry front paws, a long furry tail in the back and a small head with yellow slit eyes. It had scales on its chest, I liked to think about it as chest armor for a Squike. A drait is a group of baby Squikes.
The animals here weren’t that same as the ones on Earth. I live in a place called, Zvēru zeme, or in English, the Land of the Beasts. I looked around for a moment, looking for Kit. Soon I saw a rustle in the grass and then a figure jumped on me.
Kit, my Feaxle, a small fury creature with feathery wings, licked my ear. This Feaxle was multi-colored. She had white ears and forehead, lavender nose and cheeks, purple torso, indigo back and stomach, purple paws, and white at the end of her tail and wings.
“Hey, Kit.” I said with a smile.
She squealed as I petted her. “C’mon, I need to tell Mr. Yarrowood, what happened to Kaitlyn.”
She jumped onto my shoulder and wrapped around my neck. When she was secure, I took off on a run.
The trees of the woods that soon took over my view were a shiny ice blue. Winter here was beautiful. Everything changed. The trees, the grass, the sky, even the sun.
I soon reached three nice, wood cabins in a triangle. All had some decorations to tell them apart.
My cabin was at the back of the triangle and was decorated with wind chimes and bird feeders that I got on Earth. Mr. Yarrowood’s was decorated with statues of the different animals on Zvēru zeme. Zeva’s was decorated with different, fake weapons, and some plants.
Zeva is a friend of mine that I’ve known since I was young. And I know for a fact that she likes me. I’m pretty sure she doesn’t know I know, but it’s pretty obvious.
Well, it was after Mr. Yarrowood accidently told me one day.
But I don’t like her like that. I have feelings for someone else. I’m just too scared to tell Zeva. She seems very tough but can be fragile with some subjects.
Like her parents, for example.
But I can’t judge, I’m sensitive on that topic too.
I quickly walked to Mr. Yarrowood’s cabin, knocking furiously upon my arrival.
“Yes…yes. Hello, Brax. Oh! What’s wrong?” Mr. Yarrowood’s face went into a puzzled expression. “Something happened with Kaitlyn.”
Mr. Yarrowood’s one eye widened a little. He was missing an eye, I don’t know the details, but apparently, when he was younger, a battle took his left eye out.
“Come in, come in.” He widened the door for me, and I walked in. The room was cozy and dimly lit. A fire crackled in the fireplace, and a tea kettle sat on the fire.
I brought that kettle for him from Earth. It started to squeal, and he went to pull it out with some clothes.
“Tea?” Mr. Yarrowood asked and poured a cup for himself. “No, thank you.” I said and sat down on one of the chairs.
He soon joined me. “So, what happened?” he asked once he set his cane down.
“She’s hurt. Bad. She has two casts on, and she’s in a wheelchair! Then, she told me that she wanted to break something.” It made me mad just thinking about it.
“Did she say how she got hurt?” Mr. Yarrowood asked, looking at me.
“An accident. She didn’t say specifically, though.” His hand unexpectedly clenched.
“We’re running out of time.” He said worriedly. My heart started to race.
“Should I get her?” I asked, I’ve always wanted to talk to her as myself, not someone or something else. “No.” I stopped a frown before it could escape.
“We’ll send Ila. If we chose well, she’s more likely to follow an animal rather than a human.” I nodded. “Especially one that doesn’t look like something she’s seen before.” Mr. Yarrowood stood and put his teacup on the counter.
“Tell Zeva to get everything ready for her. Kaitlyn will be here tomorrow night.” Mr. Yarrowood told me.
I nodded once more and stood up, leaving.
I walked through the woods where Zeva always trained. Her talent-or “power” as people on Earth would say-was that she was an expert with all weapons immediately. Really though, it meant she was an expert with anything if she needed to use it as a weapon.
I heard her grunt as she practiced. “Hey.” I said as I walked closer. I learned the hard way to make my presence known when she’s training.
“Hey, Brax.” Zeva stopped and put her katana that she was using back on her weapon rack.
“Hey.” “What do you need?” Zeva asked, her black eyes looking into my dark purple ones.
“Mr. Yarrowood needs you to set up Kaitlyn’s stuff. She’s coming tomorrow night.” I explained.
She rolled her eyes and started walking back to the cabins. She’s never seemed to like Kaitlyn, and I never understood why.
“How do we even know if she’s ‘the one’?” Zeva asked. “She fits the requirements.” I shrugged.
“Yeah, when you were stalking her. But what about when you weren’t?” My face turned to one of shock.
“Hey! I do not stalk her!” I said in defense. Zeva started to count off her fingers.
“She doesn’t know who you are. She doesn’t know you are watching her. You follow her around. And you report what she’s been doing back to someone.” Now it was my turn to roll my eyes.
“Yes, but it’s for her own good. And she does technically know who I am.” I said, proud of my response.
“Does she know you as Brax?” Zeva smirked, knowing she had won.
“Whatever.” I stuffed my hands into my pockets and walked with her. Then, a memory crossed my mind.
Kaitlyn and I did meet when I wasn’t someone else before.
Mr. Yarrowood took me to Earth the first time when I was six. He only told me why, though afterward.
“Mr. Yarrowood! Look at this pretty flower I picked!” I showed him a big, purple violet.
“Wow, Brax. Here, I have an idea. Go give it to that girl, in the sunflower dress.” He pointed to a small girl.
She had long brown hair, with big green eyes. She wore a yellow dress with sunflowers on it. She was picking a bunch of flowers, and it was leading her this way.
“Okay!” I said and started to run up to her.
She looked up at me and our eyes locked. Suddenly, I couldn’t speak.
She was beautiful. Her green eyes shined, her cheeks were rosy, and her brown hair was silky. And when she smiled, the whole world lit up.
“Hi!” She smiled at me like she’d known me her whole life and I wasn’t just a stranger who came up to her.
When I didn’t speak, she continued to, “That’s a pretty flower.” She pointed to the violet in my hand. “I have violets in my yard.” I blinked at her.
“I’m Kaitlyn.” She smiled. We stared at each other. Then I remembered what I was supposed to do.
I quickly lifted the violet up to her. Her eyes lit up. I thought I might pass out.
“Thank you!” She said happily as she took it and added it to her collection. Then a woman called her name. “Oh! I got to go. Bye!” She then ran off.
I stood there for a moment, then ran back to Mr. Yarrowood. “Good job, Brax. What was her name?” He asked. “Kaitlyn.” I said softly.
He hummed and nodded.
“Mr. Yarrowood? Why did you take me here?” I asked as we started to the back of the park, where there were no people.
“I’ll tell you when you’re older. For now, I’d like you to keep an eye on Kaitlyn.” He said as he took a canteen of water out of his bag. “Oh, okay.” He poured the water on the concrete.
“Zvēru zeme!” He yelled and the pathway opened. We quickly walked in. It closed with a Pop! And we arrived back home.
When I was eight was when I learned what “crushes” were and everything and that’s when I realized I liked her.
He told me a year later why I went to Earth that day. And why I must watch Kaitlyn.
It was because of Tumšais, or, The Dark One. The whole reason we need Kaitlyn is because of him. The reason for our land, our home, to be dying, is because of him.64Please respect copyright.PENANAfMflXfFKDt
