Chapter 3
…at First Sight

More than three months have passed since I became a stalker following Dr. Thanwa's life. Normally, whenever I was free from picking up souls with Manop, I'd eavesdrop on the nurses' gossip.
But not anymore!
My fellow female spirits and I began to sneak off to see Dr. Thanwa, my future husband. However, being the leader of the Clear Gang, I exercised my authority. “For good!”, I claimed. Dr. Thanwa was mine and mine alone.
As usual, every day after examining patients and providing physical therapy, Dr. Thanwa sat in his office doing paperwork on the computer.
I had nothing else to do, and being able to gaze at a handsome man was the best thing to ever happen to me since I became a spirit.
I prop my chin up with both hands, sitting on the chair in front of the desk, smiling broadly as I stare at the doctor's face and chatter away for over an hour, just like every other day.
"Doctor, you must be tired of compliments by now, right? But what can I do? You're so hand-handsome. I'm so happy. Even if I can't talk to you, just being able to look at you brings me joy."

I never thought she would follow through on what she said when we first met.
On days when I don't see her, I find myself looking for her. Sometimes, even after I finish my paperwork, I pretend to be busy and continue working just to hear her chatter away, telling me about her adventures with the Clear Gang and her daily afterlife.
There are times she comes quietly, not speaking a word, resting her chin on her arms on the desk. That's when I know the spirit she picked up that day must have been in deep sorrow, making her feel down, too. Over these last three months, Aiye has become a part of my life.
When others compliment my looks, I feel indifferent. Perhaps it's because I've been hearing it since I was young, so it doesn't affect me much. But I get bashful when those compliments come from those tiny red lips.

"Doctor, I did a good deed today! I helped reconcile Master Jao Thi with his daughter from his past life, giving him a chance to make amends for his wrongdoings. I'm a top-notch matchmaker! Do you remember your patient in bed seven of the Rehabilitation Ward? The one who was in a coma for several weeks but suddenly woke up? Her name is Asita or Sita. Something like that."
"It's Prasita,” Dr. Thanwa said with a smirk. “And you're not a matchmaker. You're just a meddler."
"Right, Prasita. Hey I wasn't meddling, I just wanted to help. But…” I paused, shocked by what I’d just heard.” Huh? Did you just answer me, Doctor? Doctor? Doctor, you can see me? You're talking to me, aren't you?" I stood up and asked excitedly, floating over to his side. But due to my clumsiness or whatever, I ended up plopping right down on Dr. Thanwa's lap.
The doctor's lap is so warm, I thought giddily.
I was surprised that even as a spirit I could feel Dr. Thanwa's body. To make sure I wasn't dreaming, I had to verify the truth, I ran a hand up and down his chest, smiling at the realization that he was solid, real, beneath my touch.
"Aiye, if you don't stop rubbing, groping, touching, and squeezing my body like this, I can't guarantee there won't be something else that perks up... more than this," Dr. Thanwa said.
Huh? Oh! My mouth dropped open. "Sorry!" I quickly got up from Dr. Thanwa's lap as if I had sat on hot coals, before returning to sit in my original chair.
"If you've been hearing and seeing me for the past three months, then...?" I asked tentatively, not quite sure how to breach the subject.
"Aiye, are you shy?"
I could only nod vigorously when he detached my hands and asked me point-blank like that.
"I'm not used to you being shy. Where's the bold Aiye who said she would court me, who sneaks kisses on my cheek when I'm off-guard, who can stare at my face for days on end, and the one who..."
I quickly lifted my face and reached out to cover Dr. Thanwa's mouth before he could say anything more to embarrass me.
I couldn’t deny that everything he said was true. But was it necessary to expose me like that in front of him?
Even if I am a spirit...
I’m still a woman.
I may have acted like a lovestruck ghost, but I didn't think he would hear and see everything!

I could only send an affectionate gaze to Aiye, who had her tiny hands covering my mouth. I was puzzled as to why I could touch her and no other spirits. The other spirits she's told me about over the past three months, I've never seen them.
Strange, isn't it? Why wasn't I afraid of losing my mind from the moment I saw her? I can't quite explain it, but deep down, my heart tells me she means me no harm. She might just be lonely.
As it turns out, I've grown attached to Aiye. On days I don't see her, I... miss her.
To be honest, I didn't accidentally answer her. I did it on purpose. I wanted to talk to her and get to know her better. When she served the ball though, I took the chance to hit it back.
One person in a million, I guess, gets to see and have a spirit as a girlfriend... Right?

“Let me see your face, Aiye," Dr. Thanwa said.
The doctor lifted my chin to meet his sharp gaze and prevented me from lowering my head again.
"Come on, tell me how you meddled I mean, how you played matchmaker for Master Jao Thi."
When I heard the Doctor ask that, I remembered there was an important matter I hadn't told him about yet.
"The patient in bed seven was sleeping like Sleeping Beauty in a coma because Master Jao Thi took her spirit back to the past. Once everything got resolved, Miss Prasita woke up. You'll probably get to talk to her tomorrow. But don't ask her about it. Master Jao Thi said my spirit aura is similar to Miss Prasita's. Since Miss Prasita was able to wake up and live normally, my physical human body might be lying somewhere, too."
"You mean, in reality you might not be dead yet, but rather sleeping or being Sleeping Beauty somewhere, waiting for me to kiss you awake?"
"Master Jao Thi speculated that,” I admitted. “I'm not Sleeping Beauty. You don't have to kiss me awake, Doctor." My earlobes burned as my face flushed red..
"Oh! This is the best news ever. So, from now on, after work, let's search together to find out who you really are, Aiye."
I smiled, not knowing if I could ever feel happier than in that moment.
