Sebastian walked into Ciel’s room what felt like the hundredth time that night to find his master wincing and turning into the bed, breathing shakily as his brows drew together in fear.
Sebastian sighed, closing his eyes softly before stepping back over to the bed. “Ah, master. You ignore the pain during the day, but it always comes back to haunt you in your sleep, doesn’t it? Not even the great Lord Phantomhive can escape his subconscious, can he?”
He smiled when he set the fully lit candlestick on the nightstand and sat on the bed, staring down as Ciel breathed shakily, eyes squeezing shut tighter.
“No…” he whimpered, “no, you can’t! I am… I am….”
Sebastian just lightly caught onto Ciel’s hand, making his breath shake more. “You are Ciel Phantomhive. Earl Phantomhive at age twelve. You are my master, and you forever will be. Now don’t let a puny little dream burn you with fear, my lord. That won’t do any of us good, will it?”
Ciel’s lips twisted in fear, and he whimpered, breaths straining.
“You can hear me, can’t you?” Sebastian said then, lashes lowering. “Human minds are very complicated, indeed.”
Ciel just struggled under the sheets, turning his head to the side. “I am… Earl Phantomhive! No… lowly human touches me!”
“Master,” Sebastian said gently, “you have nothing to fear now… I understand that deep in your mind you suffer from everything you’ve been through. Your trauma… the pain… the suffering. I know, master. I understand.” He then leaned further, clutching onto Ciel’s hand tighter. “But… alas… you have me now. Your guardian… your protector. Nothing will harm you now. So there’s no need to be afraid… no need to fear what you fear. Because I am here….”
Ciel gripped his hand tightly, teeth gritting.
“All you have to do…” Sebastian said then, lips curling into a smile, “is say my name.”
Ciel gritted his teeth tighter. “Sebas….”
His lashes lowered. “You can do it.”
“Sebasti… Sebasta….”
“Just say my name…” Sebastian whispered.
“Sebasti… Sebastian!” Ciel finally let out, toes curling under the covers. “Sebastian! Sebastian!”
“Master,” he whispered quietly.
“Sebastian!” Ciel said then, sweat sliding down his temples. “Make it stop! Stop them!”
Sebastian just smiled, eyes glowing a bright red. “Yes, master.”
He then set his hand on Ciel’s forehead, lashes lowering when he ran his thumb under Ciel’s eye. “Dream peacefully… deep down… breathe… and sleep. Deeply. Like you’ve never dreamed peacefully before… now, master… Shhhh….”
Ciel’s expression relaxed a bit. “Sebastian….”
“It’s alright…” Sebastian said then, smiling still, “it’s just a little magic. There’s no need to fight it, young master.”
He turned his head to the side, breaths softening as his grip relaxed against Sebastian’s.
Sebastian just gazed up, still smiling. “There’s my good master. Dreaming peacefully like he should be. Your mind is a nuisance. How does it expect you to survive if it will not allow you to sleep?” He just smiled and brushed Ciel’s hair away from his forehead. “Alas… I guess this is why humans are so interesting. Their faults are what make them so appetizing. Even so, master… your faults are your perfection, after all.”
