Smothering the swarm of Xenophage, I dragged myself towards the acid bath.
Blood turned the dirt to sludge. Innards, still warm from being torn out of the carcasses splattered across the compound, were crushed and smeared by the vehicles that had joined the onslaught.
My brothers and sisters were dead. Ripped apart just like the humans. They didn't have time to even shed a part of themselves to try and find new hosts. They were fed through the gnashing and slicing teeth of the Xenophage that sprayed their blood in a red mist out the back of their heads.
To the surviving three huddled together, it may have looked like a heroic thing I was doing; saving them from the monsters trying to tear free.
But, I didn't do it for them. I did it for him.

He was laying there, too injured to run after me. After being sliced open by the Xenophage, he was only being held together by fragments of me. Eddie couldn't fight his own body. He couldn't fight me either.
He collapsed in the dirt and gasped in precious breath. Too stunned to move, tears brimmed in his eyes when he watched me move into position between the two trenches of acid.
Eddie was a fragile thing. I truly did appreciate him and everything he meant to me. He was a good host who pushed himself to his limits more than once for us.
I was going to miss him. I really wanted to see Lady Liberty by his side, basked in sunset like when we gazed at the same one on the beach so long ago.

Stretching myself outwards, I picked up the ripped door of the crashed helicopter he had pulled himself from, trying to lure the Xenophage away by using himself as bait.
I had acted first. Swallowing them, they fought for freedom to be the first to kill the last remaining survivors and my host.
The door went over Eddie to shield him. Seeing his face drop into recognition at what was about to happen, he pounded on it pitifully, silently calling to me.
With Eddie protected, I moved to the human in the military suit who was hobbling to the panel that would start the acid shower.
I almost lost grip of a Xenophage when he leant into the scanner that confirmed his identity through his eyes. Speaking to it, the rain began.

My screams mixed with theirs. Piercing hot fire stabbed straight through my head and shoulders, tearing out of my chest and arms desperately struggling to smother the Xenophage smashing themselves against me.
It was agonizing! My body ran like foul blood. Flesh and fluid washed into the trenches that sizzled as it devoured every speck of symbiote that made me.

I could feel it drilling into my head and snaking out of my melting eyes when the shower suddenly stopped.
The human has collapsed. Reaching over to him, I bound him to the machine with pieces of myself so he could remain glued to the scanner and finish killing me.

Eddie was being eaten by darkness when it sizzled the nerves behind my eyes. Blinded, the torturous acid sliced open my skull from inside my ear canals, spooling into my brain.
I knew I had to do this. I had to save Eddie. With one of us dead, the Codex within me would be destroyed. My father would never be able to send more Xenophage, or tear himself from the prison we put him in so we could save ourselves and take refuge on this planet.
My family I had only met were dead before me. I would be joining them soon in a dark eternity of nothingness.

Liquified eyeballs ran with my tears. Reaching out, I felt my dissolved bones collapse, before darkness tore me from the one thing that mattered most.
