TWO WEEKS AGO:
It was midnight, and I was feeling completely drained. I leaned back in my chair to unwind for a moment when a notification lit up my phone screen. It was a text from Winnie. "Are you still in the office, Vee?" I shot her a quick "YES" and got back to working on the rough draft presentation, for a new business, a food franchise basically; which me and Raylan are starting. After about half an hour of dedicated work, I finally wrapped it up and felt ready to head home.
As I left the office and walked to my car, I thought how exhausting the day had been. I don't drive often, but tonight it seemed necessary since I was working late. On my way home, I spotted a man with his daughter. The way he was wrapping muffler around her neck hit me hard, reminding me of my late father. He used to do the same thing for me. I miss him so much.
Then, out of nowhere I caught a glimpse of something in my rearview mirror; that reminded me of him, ------- DEREK ASHCROFT.
An overwhelming sensation washed over me, one that I can't quite articulate. The next thing I remember from that night was the sickening crunch of metal as my car collided with a lorry, flipping over in a chaotic spiral.
The moment the car collided with the lorry, everything happened in a blur. The sound of metal crunching echoed in my ears, drowning out the world around me. It felt like time slowed down as my car was lifted off the ground, spinning wildly.
The headlights of the lorry flashed brightly, illuminating the night for just a split second before everything turned dark. I could feel the weight of the car shifting, the tires losing grip on the asphalt. The force of the impact sent my body slamming against the seat belt, and I braced myself for the worst.
As the car flipped, I could see the ground rushing up to meet me, then the sky, then the ground again. The car landed on its roof with a jarring thud, glass shattered, and I heard the sickening sound of metal scraping along the tarmac. It felt like an eternity but in reality, it was just a few seconds. The world spinning around me was slowly coming to a stop.
The air bags had deployed, softening my landing; but still leaving me disoriented. I could smell smoke and something burning. My heart raced as I tried to process what had just happened.
And then everything went dark. The dim light from the street lamps outside faded away; leaving me in a suffocating silence. I felt the weight of the world pressing down on me, my thoughts swirling in a void. It was, as if time had stopped, and for a moment; I was lost in the darkness, unsure about what would come next ------ a reminder of how fragile everything really is.
