Chapter 3

I should never have let Jimmy talk me into this! I thought ruefully as Cruz swung into the parking lot of the motel. Too late to back out now, Kell! Too late now!
After we parked and got out of his van Cruz slung a bag with his camera in it over his shoulder and helped me put on my backpack. Jimmy handed me the props he used when he posed, a baseball bat and glove, then picked up a suitcase that had the outfits I was going to pose in in it, and the three of us took everything over to the motel room. From the outside the rooms all looked the same—totally drab with the same orange-colored doors and beige curtains drawn over their windows, and except for us, nobody was coming in or going out.
I put the baseball bat and glove and my backpack up on the bed after we went inside and Jimmy set the suitcase down on the floor. Cruz locked the door with the latch thing that slid over a little ball, then put his bag with his camera in it beside my backpack and went into the bathroom. Jimmy and I sat on the bed and waited.
“God is it hot in here,” I complained. “Why doesn’t he turn on the air conditioner? Doesn’t it work?” I asked my brother.
“No, but the fridge does,” Jimmy answered.
“Is there anything to drink in it?” I asked him.
“Yeah, I’ll show you,” he answered, and got up from the bed.
I followed Jimmy over to the little refrigerator and stood behind him while he crouched down and opened the door. Beer and wine coolers were all that were in there. I had wine coolers at Jenna’s party and they made me so sick Jimmy had to take me home and sneak me into the bathroom, tiptoeing so we wouldn’t wake up Mom and Dad. You drank them way too fast! Jimmy admonished me after I threw up. They’re not like soda Kelly. You have to drink them slow!
“You shouldn’t take one without asking him,” I cautioned my brother when he reached into the fridge to get a beer.
“Kelly it’s okay,” Jimmy quickly answered. “He said we could have as many as we want. Drinking a beer while you pose helps you get over your nervousness. Try one,” he urged me after wrestling the beer out of the plastic thing holding the beers together and snapping it open. I better not, I thought, remembering my first and only experience with drinking.
Cruz snapped a beer open too after he came out of the bathroom, making three for him—he already had two at the restaurant, and when he saw that Jimmy had gotten a beer he asked me if I would like one. No thanks! I told him, and sat on the edge of the bed with my brother and waited while Cruz set his camera on the tripod. I was going to be posing first, and asked him if I should put on one of the bikinis.
“No chiquita,” he answered, “we’ll save the best for last. What else did you bring?”
I got up from the bed to show him, and started taking the things I brought from home out of my backpack. He stood behind me to look at them and put his hands on my waist. I wish you wouldn’t stand so close with Jimmy here. And hold me the way you are. You’re embarrassing me again!
Jimmy got up from the bed to go to the bathroom. After he went in and closed the door Cruz pressed himself up against my butt. I stopped taking my things out of my backpack and he leaned down and kissed me on the cheek. My heart started pounding. Even harder when Cruz ran his hands up and down my arms and once lightly on my breasts. Accidentally—or on purpose?
Before I could pull away he spun me around and kissed me, on the lips, planting a really long one and asked me if I had ever been kissed like that. Totally flustered, I shook my head. He asked me if I had ever frenched. I shook my head again and we did that too, I mean I let Cruz do it, stick his tongue in my mouth and flick mine while I stood there with my eyes closed. You’re not ready for this Kell. He’s ten years older than you and this is pretty advanced, even though Stephanie told me she frenched when she made out with Brandon—all the hot girls at school did too when they made out with a guy. Trying for even more, Cruz put his hand down there and I quickly pushed it away. That was going too far.
He wouldn’t have tried that or kissed me the way he did if Jimmy had been here! What was taking my brother so long? I fretted as I turned ’round to take the rest of my things out of my backpack.
I pulled out the bikinis and laid them on the bed while Cruz looked on. Ooohh how nice! he exclaimed when he saw the white one.
How in the world did this get in my backpack? I had been in such a hurry putting everything for the photo shoot in it, so worried Mom might come in that I had picked up my pajama top, the one with the two Care Bears on it holding hands and saying “just friends,” and stuffed it in the backpack with the outfits I planned to take with me. I was totally mortified by the stupid thing, but Cruz said I would look cute posing in it. “Pinups,” photos like these were called, he told me, and would go in his folio with his best ones.
I took the pajama top over to the bathroom to put it on. Jimmy was still in there and I knocked on the door. “It’s okay. You can come in,” he said.
“Cruz wants me to pose in this lame thing,” I said after going in the bathroom and holding up the pajama top so Jimmy could see it.
“He had me pose in some weird things too, Kell. A T-shirt just like his, only cut off so short it barely covered my chest,” Jimmy exclaimed. “Go figure!”
I put the pajama top on the sink counter and reached up to take off the cross. I couldn’t get the clip thing holding the chain on undone, and when he saw me struggling with it Jimmy got it unhooked.
“Thanks,” I said, and took off the cross and laid it on the sink counter.
“No problem. I’ll go out while you change,” Jimmy answered, and started for the door.
“You can stay. I could use some moral support!” I quickly told him, and he sat down on the side of the tub.
“Are you nervous?” he asked me as I unzipped my shorts and stepped out of them.
“Totally,” I admitted. “I’ve never done anything like this before. Maybe I’ll try a beer too,” I said as I pulled off my top and tossed it over on the sink counter. I suppose I should take this off too, I thought, and reached ’round my back to unhook my new bra. You don’t wear a bra under a pajama top, do you?
The bra didn’t come undone easily like my old one and Jimmy got up from the tub to unhook it. I stood with my back to him while he fumbled with the hooks, making me wonder if he’d ever taken a girl’s bra off before, meaning Wendy’s. Probably not. She was the only girl Jimmy had ever gone out with, and then only for a week or so—hardly long enough to get to second base. Kelly what a thing to be thinking about your own brother! And speaking of bras, you really shouldn’t be letting him stay in here seeing you in yours!
“It looks new. Did you just get it?” he asked me.
“Yep, at the mall, when I got the bikinis,” I answered, and when I felt it come undone, clutched the bra to my breasts. “And the panties I have on. They’re new too.”
“I noticed,” Jimmy said. “They really look sexy.”
“Wait till you see the bikinis. Especially the white one. It hardly covers a thing! I hope I’m not too embarrassed to pose in it!”
“You’ll be okay,” Jimmy assured me.
Still clutching the bra to my breasts, I waited for my brother to look away, or take the hint and go out with Cruz while I finished changing.
“I’ll get you the beer,” he said, and went out the door.
When I came out Jimmy handed me the beer and took his with him over to the sofa to sit and watch while I embarked on my no-experience-necessary, make-hundreds-of-dollars-a-day modeling career with Cruz. Christie Brinkley sure didn’t start this way! Posing in a Care Bears top!
Eeww, did the beer ever taste bitter, but I sipped it anyway to help me get over my nervousness. When Cruz turned on the umbrella thing I took one last sip, then set the beer down on the little table and went over to pose standing before the sheet.
In my first pose Cruz had me clasp my hands together in my lap and stare down at the floor like I was deep in thought. About what? Jimmy’s precious Honda del Sol? God was that ever stupid!
In my next pose I stood there like a cheerleader, hands on hips with my legs spread and arms akimbo. I needed to look foxy in this one, Cruz said, and give him a big smile. ¡Sonría, Kelly! ¡No se mueva! he instructed me in Spanish. Smile, Kelly! Don’t move! he repeated in English. And that was the hardest part, standing perfectly still with a silly grin on my face till Cruz snapped the photo.
I posed sitting on a sheet on the floor next. Jimmy helped Cruz spread it out, and after he got back on the sofa I sat on the sheet with my knees pulled up and hugged to my chest, then with my legs spread while I leaned back, propped up by my arms with the pajama top hiked up over my panties. These poses are pretty revealing, I thought, or whatever it’s called when they show too much!
I showed even more in the next one. Cruz had me climb up on the bed and sit back on my knees while he unbuttoned the pajama top. My heart skipped a beat when he started undoing the buttons. Cruz, I don’t have my bra on as you can plainly see! You didn’t say anything about posing for pictures like these. And neither did you Jimmy, I fumed, and glared at my brother sitting on the sofa holding his beer and staring while Cruz undid the pajama top.
After he got it undone he draped the top on me and parted it so they could see a little of my breasts, then moved the tripod closer to the bed and crouched behind it to take the photos. Now give me the big smile! he instructed me again. ¡Sonría, Kelly! ¡Sonría!
Totally relieved when he finished taking these shots, I buttoned up the pajama top and got off the bed. I was going to pose holding the baseball bat next, and wearing the glove, and picked up my beer from the little table and took more sips while Cruz set up the lights.
When everything was ready I put the beer down and went into the bathroom to change into running shorts and the pin-striped Yankees top Jimmy had posed in. The top was a little big on me, but the cap I wore with it was the right size, and after fixing my hair in a pony tail and pulling it through the back of the cap I went out into the motel room and picked up the baseball bat and glove.
Cruz didn’t need to coach me when I posed before the sheet. Jimmy and I had played baseball together lots of times and I crouched down in a hitting position and raised the bat over my head, clutching it like I was going to slam one out of the park while the camera clicked and whirred, then put on the glove and got down on my knee and posed like I was fielding a hot grounder hit sharply to the hole between second and third.
I modeled the things I brought from home next and the outfits in Cruz’s suitcase that fit me, and even sat for a portrait in one, on the wooden stool. It seemed like it took forever, Cruz was so fussy, and after that we took a break.
“See Kelly, I told you how easy it would be,” Jimmy said while the three of us stood there sucking on our beers, me still taking little sips of mine.
“Yeah, but it’s so hot under the lights,” I complained, “and you have to stand there so long with a silly grin on your face! And Cruz, why do you have to take so many shots? Am I doing okay?”
“Muy bueno, chiquita,” he answered, and took a big swig of his beer.
I took another sip of mine and Jimmy asked me how I liked it. “It’s so bitter!” I exclaimed, but the alcohol was helping me chill out, and when Jimmy asked me if I’d rather have a wine cooler I quickly told him I would. “Now don’t chug-a-lug it, Kell,” he warned me after getting me one from the fridge. “Okay?”
Okay, but you should talk, Jimmy. You’ve already started on your second beer!
I posed for more pinups, in the bikinis next. I set my wine cooler down on the little table and went over to the bed and picked them up, holding one in each hand. “Which one should I put on first?” I asked señor Cruz.
“Ooohh the white one,” he answered, and took another big swig of his beer.
I took the bikinis into the bathroom to change. Hoo boy, is this ever skimpy! I exclaimed after putting on the white one and looking at it in the mirror. The top was just two tiny triangles that didn’t have the cup things in them like my one-piece suit did, and another tiny triangle barely covered me down there. And the strings they were tied on with were so thin you could hardly see them. I should never have gotten this skimpy thing. It would be okay at the beach—but here? In this totally cramped motel room, posing in it in front of my brother and dirty mouth?
I took one last look at myself in the mirror and nervously patted what little there was of the bikini top before opening the bathroom door.
“Wow!” Jimmy exclaimed when I came out.
“Ay qué pechos,” Cruz whistled under his breath. “Voy a follar ésa. Ella es lo suficientement mayor para el calvo.”
I could only guess what that meant. Cruz, could you please speak English if you don’t mind? And could you please translate if you know what he’s saying, Jimmy?
Cruz had me stand before the sheet in the cheerleader pose while he took some shots crouching behind the tripod, and then from every which way and angle while he knelt down on the floor. Next he had me get up on the bed so he could take more shots of me posing sitting back on my knees like I had in the pajama top.
I was going to lay on a beach towel in the poses after that, and got off the bed and went over to the little table to sip my wine cooler while Cruz got everything set up. Jimmy helped him by spreading the beach towel out on the sheet on the floor.
After Cruz placed the lights where he wanted them I set my wine cooler down, and using the rolled-up pajama top for a pillow, lay on the beach towel like I was sunbathing, on my stomach with my arms at my sides. Cruz had Jimmy undo the bikini top and tuck the strings under my arms, then stretch them out on the towel, making them look like they would when you undid your top to sunbathe at the beach.
My brother got back on the sofa and Cruz took the photos kneeling beside me, holding the camera in his hands. I could fall asleep, I thought as I listened to its gentle clicking, even on this hard floor, the beer and wine cooler had made me so drowsy.
“Turn over chiquita,” Cruz instructed me.
Clutching the bikini top against me, I got to my feet, then knelt down and lay on my back in another sunbathing pose, with my eyes closed and arms and legs spread like a snow angel’s. Still on his knees, Cruz wriggled closer and whispered more stuff in Spanish. Even if it was dirty I didn’t care, everything seemed so dreamy, laying there listening to the camera softly click and whir.
I was about to nod off when Cruz stopped shooting and stood up. “You put on the other one for me now,” he said, and I quickly got up and changed into the red-and-blue striped bikini and posed all over again.
Now it was Jimmy’s turn. Was he really going to go through with it, pose naked?
