so this is my first contest so hopefully i did this okay! it doesn't quite fit the prompt because i accidentally missed one word in the prompt but you can imagine the spell extending to make anne hear rose's thoughts the next day or something, etc, etc. i hope this okay !!49Please respect copyright.PENANA9DEuAsFEzB
The spell settled over Anne and William's heads in a cloud of pink smoke as the witch waved her wand.
"What the hell?" William demanded, coughing harshly into his elbow. "I told you I didn't want any of that spell nonsense on me."
His sister, Rose, looked just as outraged. "You were supposed to put the spell on me and Anne!" She said. "We paid for the best friend mind meld spell!"
Anne nodded vigorously. "Why on earth would you think I would want to read his mind? Or have him read my mind?" She went pale at the thought.
William scoffed. I doubt you have anything interesting floating around in that tiny brain of yours.
"Shut up, says you." Anne retorted.
William looked surprised. "Did I say that out loud?"
"Say what out loud?" Rose asked.
Shit.
The witch, Madam Magick, as she so creatively called herself, giggled. "I think this spell will suit you better."
Anne felt panic surge inside her. "Get rid of it now!" She said shrilly. She'd been reluctant to meld her mind with her best friend's, even with how close they were, but her best friend's brother was actually the last person she'd pick to hear her personal thoughts. And to have to hear his too?? This was turning into her worst nightmare.
Madam Magick shrugged. "I can't. It will wear off on its own in 24 hours." With that, she vanished in the same cloud of pink smoke she'd showered Anne and William with.
Well, that's just great.
Anne scowled at William. "Shut up."
He pulled a face at her. I'm just thinking, I can't help it.
"Rose, what the hell?!" Anne turned to her best friend, filled with anger and anxiety. "'It'll be fun! What could go wrong?'" She mocked Rose's earlier words. "This! This is what could go wrong."
I said it was a bad idea.
Anne rolled her eyes and ignored William's thoughts.
Rose grimaced. "I'm sorry!! I'm sorry! But to be fair, how was I supposed to know she was actually magic?"
Anne found she couldn't argue with that, though she wished she could. She sighed, anger fading. "Okay, well what am I going to do? Do you reckon its a distance based thing? Could we just part ways for the allotted time and hope for the best?"
"We could try." Rose said, looking hopeful.
"Hey, why can't I hear Anne's thoughts?" William butted in. Both girls turned their heads to frown at him.
"You can't hear my thoughts?" Anne asked slowly, not daring to hope that maybe the spell was one-sided.
"So far, no." William said, looking pissed. "I've been trying." Maybe you really don't have anything in your head.
"Such a funny joke." Anne said, voice dripping with sarcasm. "How many times am i going to hear that one before this day is up?"
"What?" Rose said, confused.
Anne shook her head. "It doesn't matter." She turned her attention back to William. "I'm thinking of a number, what is it?"
William furrowed his brow in concentration. "Three?"
Anne shook her head. "Four." Internally, she breathed a sigh of relief. Whilst it was a pain to have William's voice inside her head, it would have been worse if he could hear her thoughts too.
How is that fair? I'm stuck having her read my mind and I don't even get to read hers to level the playing field. She's going to lord this over me forever...
Anne felt kinda bad. Here she was feeling happy that her mind wasn't going to be invaded, but William didn't get the same luxury.
"Come on, guys, lets get out of here." Rose said. They walked out of the witch's tent in silence.
"Well, I'm going home." Anne said once they were out in the open air. It was quite pretty outside, which made Anne feel even more sucky for being in a bad mood on such a pretty day. The sun was beginning to set and was sending pink and orange streaks across the sky.
The sky is Anne's favourite colours.
Anne looked at William in surprise. She didn't know he noticed things like that about her. Although, to be fair, she wasn't exactly subtle about her love of pink.
William didn't seem to notice Anne looking at him or he was deliberately ignoring her.
Rose sighed. "Yeah, I guess that's fair. Sorry this was such a miserable outing. We didn't even get to do all the things we wanted to do."
"It's okay, maybe next time." Anne said, as she looked out across the fair. There were so many prizes she could have lost and so many games she could have played. And she had wanted to go on the ferris wheel. And...
Fairy floss. She wanted fairy floss.
Anne looked at William again, in shock. He ignored her gaze again but his cheeks went noticeably pink. Again, Anne brushed it off. She hadn't shut up about wanting fairy floss all week.
Now that William had thought it though, Anne was craving the pink sugary treat. "Wait, I wanna get fairy floss before we leave."
William scoffed but Anne could feel the embarrassment rolling off his mind. Weird. She hadn't known she could hear some of his emotions too.
"Ooh yay, fairy floss!" Rose clapped her hands excitedly. "William, stay about a metre behind us so you don't bother Anne with your thoughts."
Anne felt William's jab of hurt. They always try to leave me out of things, and now they've got a reason.
William was just continuing to puzzle Anne. She'd had no idea he got upset when the girls left him out.49Please respect copyright.PENANA7a69On2hsQ
"Rose." Anne said quickly. "Don't be mean!"49Please respect copyright.PENANAGGU4WCs63p
Rose looked at her in confusion. Normally, Anne would just laugh it off when Rose was mean to her brother. Anne just shrugged.
Oh great, now she pities me. Just what I wanted from the girl I'm in- LA LA LA LA LA49Please respect copyright.PENANAhpU6ZLb9fJ
Anne wanted to cover her ears as William's thoughts suddenly grew louder. She visibly flinched and it stopped.49Please respect copyright.PENANAy6C4RklLIe
Sorry.49Please respect copyright.PENANADWV4BOEoPs
Anne nodded quickly in acknowledgement of William's silent apology. She quickly focused her attention back to Rose. "Can you see the fairy floss stall?"49Please respect copyright.PENANAt37fF7EmhX
"Over there!" Rose pointed and began to skip in that direction. Anne hung back and fell into step beside William.49Please respect copyright.PENANAZezv6toJLN
"What was that about?" She asked softly. "You were thinking something and then... you cut yourself off." She had to admit it had been pretty effective. She hadn't caught the end of his sentence, and she guessed that was the way he wanted it to stay.
William shrugged. "I was just trying to keep you out of my head." He said quickly. "Its weird knowing you can hear everything that passes through my mind."
Anne grimaced slightly. "Yeah, sorry about that."
"Its not your fault." William said, shaking his head. "No one could have predicted this."49Please respect copyright.PENANAbicxxdWkyd
"True." Anne admitted. "I'm still sorry."
William laughed bitterly. "At least it'll be over in 24 hours."
Rose turned back to look at the two of them. "Come on, Anne, hurry up!!" She gestured wildly.
"Coming!" Anne called back, amusement in her voice.
God, she's beautiful.49Please respect copyright.PENANAdcvCpgZK1t
Anne decided to ignore that last thought and file it away for a later date, as she ran after her best friend towards sugar and the sunset.49Please respect copyright.PENANASFgj1RuN0I
