The weekend passed in a blur, and it had felt like the best one Kaito had in a long time. Walking around the city with Ryu, without the pressure of school or anything else, had been easy like it was just the two of them, no distractions. They were more than just classmates now. They were... something else.
By the time the sun began to set, casting long shadows over the river, Kaito and Ryu found themselves sitting on a bench overlooking the water. The sounds of the city were distant, replaced by the soft rustling of leaves and the occasional murmur of people walking by. The cool evening air made Kaito shiver slightly, but it didn’t bother him much.
Ryu was leaning back, staring up at the sky. His hand was close to Kaito’s on the bench, but neither of them made a move. Kaito tried not to notice how much his heart was racing, or the fact that he couldn’t seem to stop glancing at Ryu.
"Hey," Ryu said, breaking the silence, his voice unexpectedly soft. "I never thought I’d get along with someone like you."
Kaito raised an eyebrow, slightly confused. "What do you mean, 'someone like me'?"
Ryu smirked, but it wasn’t the usual cocky grin. This one was lighter, and more... genuine. "You’re all serious and uptight, and I’m... well, me," he said, lifting a hand as if to gesture to his entire laid-back demeanor. "But it’s kinda nice. You don’t mind hanging out with me like this. No drama. Just... us."
Kaito felt his pulse quicken, and for the first time that day, he couldn't hide the smile tugging at his lips. "Yeah, it’s not so bad."
Ryu’s eyes flicked toward Kaito, and the look he gave him made Kaito’s heart flutter in his chest. There was something different in the way Ryu was looking at him, something soft and warm. He’d seen that look before, but it never felt so... real.
And then, in the stillness of the moment, it happened. Ryu moved closer, just a little bit, but enough to close the distance between them. Kaito felt his breath catch as Ryu’s gaze dropped from his eyes to his lips. The space between them seemed to shrink, the air suddenly thick with unspoken words.
Without thinking, Kaito leaned in too, his eyes fluttering shut as his lips brushed against Ryu’s.
It was soft at first, just a quick touch. Kaito pulled back slightly, eyes wide, as if checking for some kind of reaction. But Ryu didn’t move away. Instead, he leaned forward, his hand gently cupping Kaito’s face as he kissed him again, this time deeper, with more purpose. Kaito’s heart raced in his chest, and he let himself fall into it, kissing Ryu back with a mixture of curiosity and... something more.
The world around them seemed to disappear as they kissed, the cool breeze, the distant sounds of the city. none of it mattered. All that mattered was the feeling of Ryu’s lips against his, the warmth spreading through his chest, the way it felt like they were suddenly in their own little world.
When they finally pulled away, Kaito’s breath was shaky. His chest rose and fell with every beat of his heart. He opened his eyes to find Ryu looking at him with that same, unreadable expression but there was a softness in it that hadn’t been there before.
"I..." Kaito started, but his voice trailed off. He didn’t know what to say. His mind was still racing.
Ryu smiled, his fingers still gently resting on Kaito’s cheek. "You don’t have to say anything," he whispered, his voice almost teasing. "We’re good, right?"
Kaito nodded slowly, still caught in the rush of the moment. He could barely process what had just happened, but one thing was clear: things had changed. This wasn’t just some weird fluke. There was something real between them now.
"Yeah," Kaito said, his voice low, but steady. "We’re good."
And in that moment, sitting side by side on the bench, Kaito knew that whatever came next whether it was messy, confusing, or just... real they would face it together.
