"What is this machine, Dr. Oxide?" I ask, gesturing to a translucent chamber full of an odd solution. I go on vacation for a week and when I return, this happens.
She brushes a lock of her golden hair off her face. Her hair looked shorter than I last saw it, now that I think about it. "A defective one, Dr. Carbon. I wouldn't bother trying to fix it. Instead, I am working on a plan B."
"Plan B? I don't even know what plan A was!" I take a step back, eyeing her suspiciously. "What have you done this time, Aurelia?"
"Look... this is top secret information, which does not concern you. Only myself, and... him, I guess."
I know now that she has said too much. I have a hunch as to who she meant when she said 'him, I guess'. "You don't mean..."
She lets out a sigh. "That cat's out of the bag then. I'll tell you, but only because you are my second-in-command, Lead."
"That's it?" I raise an eyebrow. "Nothing else... from the 2020's, perhaps?
"No, now pay attention. This experiment was part of my plan A to curb the effects of radioactivity in humans." She goes on. "I like to look to the future. A scrapped plan is a scrapped plan. It did not work. I am returning to the drawing board for a plan B."
"And... so far?" I have known her since college, yet she still intimidates me sometimes.
"I will study radioactive people, here in the lab. I did not have enough data last time. This time, the data will be sufficient. Plans will be made accordingly."
She used the passive voice for that one. But whatever she has in mind will not be as passive.
