“Devin!!! Help!!!!” Lilian exclaimed as she walked through his bedroom door.
“What do you want, Lilian?” He groaned from under his pillow.
“I need your help.” She stated walking over to his window, relieving the blinds of their hold between the lightness from outside, and the darkness of Devin’s room.
“Geez,” Devin grunted, as he sat up at the sudden brightness of the room, “Where’s the fire?”
Lilian rolled her eyes, and walked over to his bed, setting down her backpack. “I’ve already said,” She grabbed his rolling chair and pulled it up to his bed, “ I need your help”
“With what?” He sighed, tilting his head a bit with sleepish eyes. Obviously, not excited to be awake.
“Spanish” Lilian answered, with a sheepish smile.
It was Devin’s turn to roll his eyes, “Why didn’t you just ask Google Translate or something?”
“Google translate isn’t helpful either is the internet. Trust me I’ve tried, for hours!” Lilian replied with a low expression.
Before replying, he sighed, “Have you even tried the Libro yet?”
Lilian nodded her head, “I did, and it doesn’t make sense.”
“Your dad?”
“Lyft-ing….” Her voice got quiet.
“I guess I could help.” Devin moved over, and made space on the bed for Lilian.
“Thank you!!!” She gleamed, bouncing up from the chair, and claiming her new seat next to Devin.
A little while later, Lilian was starting to get the topic. Devin asked her to voice a statement in Spanish in encouragement, but instead chuckled a bit. With the sly comment, “You sound so white.”
Lilian picked her head out of the Libro, confused “What?”
“What?” He mimicked, acting as if he said nothing
“You said something.” She sat up, more confused and now interested
“What?”
“You. You chuckled and said something while I was reading.”
“Who?”
Her face went from confused to annoyed, “You, you owl. It was you, who was the who.”
“Who?” Devin smirked, with confused-positioned eyebrows
“You laughed at me sounding white.” She glared at him, “Didn’t you?”
“What?” His face, removed all covers and only showed amusement.
“Whatever.”
Devin watched her go back to her Spanish textbook with a sigh. He waited for her to continue. It only took 5 minutes.
“Admit it Devin. We both know what you said.” She spoke as she playfully glared at her best friend.
“What did I say?” He asked in reply, giving her full eye contact.
“You said, and I quote, ‘You sound so white.’”
“Is that so?” Devin smirked, tilting his head as he leaned in just as Lilian had just done. “Are you certain about that, Princess?”
“Oh, I’m certain. One Hundred per-- Wait” Lilian leaned back, “What did you just call me?”
“I don’t know, why don’t you tell me? You seem to know. Please do tell me.” He smiled playfully
“Who--What-- A-are you feeling okay Devin?” She asked, confused by his actions
“What do you mean by that, love? I feel perfectly fine.” Devin spoke in a slight british accent, and smirk. “Now that you’re here with me” He added silently with a wink.
“Yeah, Okay. You’re totally not okay. Are you sick?” She asked placing her hand to his forehead. “No fever. Do you feel sick?”
“I’ve already told you, darling. I’m doing just swell.”
“Whale… I’m going to go. You should get some sleep, your thoughts seem to be disorientated at the moment.”
“I can promise you with all my heart that my thoughts are in perfect shape.”
“If you say, so.” She smiled worriedly, “Thank you for the help Devin. I’ll see you Monday”
Lilian moved to get up and leave but Devin grabbed her hand.
“Wait.” he called with a small voice.
“Yes?”
“I need to give you something.” he whispered before pulling them together into a kiss.
