Ants have a hardworking reputation. In part this is perpetuated by the ants themselves, and in part by humanity's way of naming them - referring to the creatures as workers gave the appearance of industry regardless of the fact we have no idea what ants do in their nests. Or, we didn't. We have since discovered so-called workers that spend their time not doing tasks that benefit the colony. They will, if active workers are removed from the colony or overwhelmed, but only then. So the moral of the story is that communities facilitate laziness, and appearances can be deceiving!
