The Weird Girl

Earlier that day, Chase had started hearing the gossiping whispers in his morning classes and in the hallways. He wasn't sure what to make of it at first; Chase McAllister wasn't the kind of person to pay attention to that kind of stuff. To him, it was just a petty part of today's society—something below him—so he just ignored it.
It wasn't until he was in his history class fourth hour before lunch. He overheard a group of giggling girls in the desks next to him talking amongst each other.
"Hey, did you see the new girl yet? Omg, she's so weird! Did you see what she wears? So dark and gloomy, she looks like some Goth, minus the makeup." One said, petty disgust clear in her voice.
"Yeah, she's in my gym class! She's SO uncoordinated." Another replied.
And this was why Chase never paid attention to all the gossip; because most of it was hateful and 99% untrue.
"Eww, she sounds like a freaky weirdo. How did she end up here?" A third asked.
"I heard she burned her house down and sent an evil demon spirit to kill her parents." The head Gossip Girl said, her voice dropping down an octave.
Chase tensed in his chair at the mention of burning. He knew how bad that went all too well.
"What a freak!" All of them murmured their agreement.
Chase shook his head in frustration, forcing himself back to the present as he blocked out their needless prattle, focusing on the teacher as he began class...
So once the lunch bell rang, Chase was out of there quickly to beat the crowd headed to the cafeteria common, trying to leave the gossip behind.
The area that served as the place where the students ate, known as the cafeteria commons—or just cafeteria, to be precise—was a big tiled room with many levels to it. The top most level had a balcony railing that overlooked the other floors of the commons. It was where most of the classes were; the floor here was carpeted and wasn't really part of the cafeteria, technically speaking. Flights of stairs branched off to the left, which was where Chase was headed now, filing in line with the lunch crowd.
The second and third floors from the top had wooden circular tables, chairs, and a couple vending machines. Chase and the other students kept descending down the stairs. Everyone was headed to the bottom floor, where the kitchens were and where the food was actually served. The place was also tiled that had long and circular tables placed at special intervals across the large expansive room.
The lunch that the school provided was good enough to eat, but, once again, Chase wasn't that hungry today, so he skipped the long lines and went with an apple and a bag of barbecue chips instead from the extras booth.
Some people, who'd made it here early, were already seated at their specific tables. Chase walked past all of them, out the doors to the courtyard outside, where he normally ate in his little secluded place away from all of the annoying people. He sat in the grass, leaning his back against the brick wall of the school, taking a big bite out of his apple as his mind wandered...
When he was finished, he went back inside to throw away his chip bag with the apple core inside. After he did so, he started weaving his way through the tables but he didn't get far-Little Miss Princess Cathrine and her Mean Girls were in his way, ganging up on some girl he'd never seen before. She sat alone at the table, while High and Mighty Cathy Honeycomb was throwing insults at her. The quiet girl just took it all with her neck bent at a submissive angle, head down.
So this was the new girl? To be honest, Chase had been expecting someone quite different from the girl in front of him now. Her hair was dark, almost black, as it hung loose; straight down from her head, extending passed her shoulders, to drape around her face. She wore a navy blue jacket with tattered jeans and ratty sneakers. Her appearance screamed loner, which was probably why these girls were picking on her. Something struck a cord in him, and he wanted to put a stop to this immediately.
Chase rolled his eyes as he groaned inwardly; Why don't they ever give it a rest?
He knew what he was going to have to do, something he rarely ever did for anyone.
