18 Earth years later…
It was in the air, the scent of fresh water.
Seraphina Beaumont knew it was going to rain by the cool oncoming breeze that gently licked her creamy caramel skin, from where she sat on a wooden railing on the brink of a sharp overhang. She watched as the deep dark blue ocean stretched out before her sway under the steering wind, vacillating back and forth as it roused the plea of a looming storm. The dark grey clouds overhead were staunch markers for her to move on and set out for school but as usual she didn’t budge. Instead, she soaked in the scenery peace that befell this small city of Darwin.
A few more moments, she thought gazing upon the dark specks along the beach below. Kites glided through the air. The birds flapped their dark wings as they circled the beached stingray beneath the overcast sky before swooping down and soaring back into the air.
The briny air and the coldness danced along her tongue. It was wet season she knew. It was a time when it would be sticky and hot but beautiful once the rain showered the city in its cooler dribbles. This was what she loved, being at one with nature but as usual it didn’t last too long as her phone beeped.
She felt it shudder in her computer bag that rested on her lap. She heard another beep then felt it tremble once again. No, no, no, she thought. It wasn’t like she needed to be made aware of what was happening and it wasn’t like she need to be a part of whatever it was that was happening. In the end, she knew that something like this was bound to happen. It was the exact reason why she came to the Cliffside where she could be alone because she just knew.
Sighing, Seraphina searched her bag before answering the device, it was a small Communicator given to those of the PASA Program. She was lucky enough to be a part of the program but a part of her wished she wasn’t. A part of her wished she could go back to her old life and enjoy the …? The what? The solitude of being alone and the whisper of paranoia etching at the forefront of her unsettled mind. No, she didn’t want that and above all, she didn’t want to be reminded of what could and should have happened to her that frightful day. If it weren’t for her teammates, she wouldn’t be here right now.
She slid her thumb across the touch screen and watched as a video of her comrade lay before her. His creamy tanned idol skin danced in a fine shade under his wavy golden brown hair and equally golden brown eyes—stared back at her. Dante, what do you want? she thought. ‘There you are,’ he observed, a little displeased, ‘I’ve been trying to get a hold of you all morning.’
‘Sorry … I’ve been a little busy.’ she deflected.
‘Sure.’ he replied, ‘You’re needed back at HQ. Aiden has found some knew intel from the ship.’
‘I’m on my way.’ ended Seraphina. Rising to her feet and slipping her single strapped bag over her body, Seraphina skimmed the beautiful ocean from over her shoulder. Her long dark thick curly hair that naturally fell down to her waist danced in the streaming wind before her dark eyes rested on her silver and black motorbike not too far from where she stood. She headed to it, the long grass silently flattened beneath her black leather boots. Picking up her silver helmet she threaded it on. The blue leather jacket she wore shone dully under the dull grey skies as it protected her from the cool air. Mounting her bike, she kicked it alive and the engine roared. Once started, she slowly moved down the dirt path and onto a dead tarmac road.
The bike zoomed down the winding street and onto the main highway. Seraphina, being a careful rider knew to be extra vigilant and less reckless even though she was a skilled rider. Her helmet beeped and the wireless Bluetooth she had lining her helmet connected to her bike as she rode. A little beep occurred once again and a male voice lurched through. ‘What can I do for you, ma’am?’
‘Mizreth, determine traffic conditions down the Stuart Highway.’
A moment later, Mizreth spoke, ‘Conditions are clear and traffic is currently flowing.’ A small screen—a bird’s eye view of the highway laid at the bottom right corner of her helmet as her peripheral vision captured it.
‘Anything else?’ the AI asked.
‘No. You’re dismissed.’ she said, turning she leaned to the left and rounded a corner. Manoeuvring off the highway, she travelled through the suburbs. Aware, she didn’t trust the highway but open to the thought that she couldn’t save herself if she got into an accident not without revealing her heritage. As a cautious rider, she curled her way through the eastern suburb of Darwin and headed to the city. Her school was in the opposite direction, give that she would be late—she knew it was a risk she’d have to take as work always came first.
Seraphina’s bike braked as she jerked into a park before the Order which looked like an average office building. Turning off the ignition, the engine ceased and she climbed off her bike. Removing her helmet, bits of her dark hair were caught in the helmet. Vigorously, she shook her head untying her wide set curls from the helmet and placed her helmet on the bike, fiddling with her bag wrapped over her body. She moved over to the parking metre and placed the coins in trusting she wouldn’t be there for more than an hour. She headed inside.
The glass door boisterously tolled as she arrived. She noted the pale grey carpets and the empty black seats. Behind the opal desk, she saw a familiar woman with a tight blond bun, ‘Marreese.’ Seraphina greeted and smiled at the woman. She walked past the counter and pulled out her security card, given to all PASA members and swiped it along the security device beside the door. The door clicked and bounced open; prying the door free she moved inside and advanced down the straight clean wide hall towards the sterling silver elevator doors at the far end.
Pressing the button, the elevator doors opened and she slipped inside. Her stomach tightened as she casually leaned against the metal railing lining the silver elevator. She never liked the idea of being inside confined spaces. She didn’t like the idea of being ins something she had no control over it was frustrating and because of it, her mind raced with all the possibility of what could go wrong. All of it made her all the more—uneasy. She concerted to see the numbers decrease as she descended. It wasn’t until she was sixteen levels below ground, the doors sprung open with a spontaneous ding!
Seraphina confidently alighted the elevator and took in her busy surroundings. Men, women and teenagers modelled the large underground complex that gleamed in white, navy blue and silver. The carpet beneath her black leather boots were as blue as the ocean while the railings beside her were as silver as steel. She glanced down, past the glass panels beneath the railing and saw another three levels below her.
The place was as massive as always.
She turned her heel and darted for the closest stairs and gracefully glided down them. ‘What?’ she heard Argos yell from the first floor of the Order’s Compound as did everyone around her who looked up as she did.
His office was at the top, near the ceiling. It was a rather arrogant spot, she thought as she knew she didn’t really respect the man nor did he really matter to her. ‘Find her!’ Seraphina swallowed, her throat tightly constricting. As she took in the sight of Argos high above, she could see him leaning over his davenport slamming his large hands on his desk. He barked something undecipherable before screaming at the top of his lungs. ‘Out!’
Seraphina internally sighed. Another day down under, she thought.
Seraphina moved to another elevator this time it was connected to the Central Control Unit—the place where all the magic happened and where her boss’s office was.
I swear he’s from horrible bosses, she thought once inside the elevator. The doors soon opened to reveal a silver blue room, similar to the one down stairs.
At the base of the stairs, Seraphina saw elegant Ella duck as she avoided a pen thrown at her while Melanie casually bought up her clipboard to deflect the stationary item. The girls glanced over at the elevator and spotted Seraphina whose lips were curved into an amused smile.
The girls almost ran over to her. ‘It’s not funny.’ seethed the slender tall blond, Melanie.
‘You’re right. It’s hilarious.’ Seraphina snickered.
‘I won’t say that so quickly.’ Ella’s dark eyes narrowed on Seraphina from behind her auburn tresses. ‘The boss is pissed and you’re the one who’s dead meat.’ Heavy thumping footfalls bounded around the room. She knew by the echo of the sound he was upstairs. Seraphina’s blood froze. She thought about hiding but she knew by the time he moved down those stairs he would have spotted her. Instead, Seraphina stood there and waited. It was mere seconds, and he was before her. His nostrils flared. His hazel eyes glowered at her and his brown brows arched low as he stared her down. He was a big, beefy man with little to no neck and a smidgeon of hair on his almost bald head.
She knew Ella and Melanie were hiding around the corner, she could see them at the corner of her eye but she didn’t dare mention it. As she knew her boss couldn’t see them unless he stood where she did on the raised landing. Below her feet were navy blue carpets like the ones down stairs and she could see his scrawny acne covered blond haired assistant sneaking up behind Argos. ‘Hi.’ Seraphina attempted.
Argos’s hazel eyes darkened. She felt her nerves fizzle and rip through her. He was mad—that much she knew. ‘Hi.’ he replied and she was surprised. ‘I’ve been on the phone to the Empress and you know what she told me.’
Seraphina remained silent. ‘When you and your team,’ he began jabbing a stubby finger into her collarbone, ‘managed to complete your objective, you decided to blow up half of the palace!’ Seraphina recoiled. She was right—he was mad. ‘I’ve been on the phone all day to different organisations trying to find ways to help rebuild that historical monument and I can’t, do you know why?’
She didn’t dare ask but he continued anyway. ‘Half of the city has been destroyed. Do you know how much I have to pay? Did you even consider to think about the lives you put in danger when you landed that ship? Did you honestly even think?’
His bony blond haired assistant hunched under his clipboard, almost as his attempt to protect himself from any verbal abuse. Violently he shook while Argos fumed. Argos waited for Seraphina’s response which posed nothing. She was unsure whether her words would be the right words or not. ‘That’s enough Argos.’ a stern voice sounded from behind him. Both Seraphina and stumpy Argos turned to eye the familiar man that casually stood leaning against the wall at the far end of the common area. It was none other than Smith—Jacob Smith.
She recognised his sandy blond hair and knew immediately who it was. He was a tall lean man with defined muscles hidden beneath his tight black shirt and navy green combat pants. His laced boots thumped against the ground as he sauntered towards the two—well three if you counted Alex, Argos’ assistant. ‘Cut the kid some slack.’
‘She’s eighteen hardly a kid.’ Argos pointed. Seraphina rolled her eyes and crossed her arms unaware of Argos giving her an appalled look.
‘Under the Australian Enactment, she is still considered ... young.’ Smith motioned reaching for words.
‘Why do you always take her side!’ Argos barked. To have demanded that, Seraphina was certain she really upset him. Thinking back on the whole thing she didn’t regret it. Sure the ship was filled with Dark Cartel members but she took them out with the other Knights. She was still a Squire but still she could fight as good as any Knight if not better, explaining why PASA insisted on sending her and her team on dangerous missions.
‘I’m not taking sides,’ Smith innocently said and held up his hands. ‘If I were to take sides you’d know.’
‘Bullcrap.’ Argos growled.
‘Language.’ Smith warned with a pointed finger at Argos.
‘No big deal, I’ve heard worse.’ Seraphina said. Argos’s and Smith’s eyes landed on Seraphina. Eyes wide as shock flooded them. ‘What? It’s true.’
The phone rung and Seraphina relaxed. ‘Whatever.’ Argos mumbled and headed into his office. Seraphina glanced over her shoulder and regarded the women hidden around the corner. ‘You can come out now.’ Seraphina assessed as she critically eyed Argos as he climbed up to his office.
‘You shouldn’t do that you know.’ Ella fussed as she almost ran to Seraphina. ‘He’s scary when he’s angry.’
‘No he’s not.’ Seraphina rejected with a wave of her hand. ‘Hunter Trolls are scary but stubby bosses—no.’
‘Maybe not to you,’ began Melanie, ‘but to us he’s a tyrant.’
Seraphina glanced over at Smith who shrugged than noticed Alex. Who stood before Seraphina a little shaky and inaugurated, ‘When things happen ... he takes it out on us. Maybe ... t-t-ry and be a little m-m-more ... t-t-thoughtful,’ he stuttered but she knew he didn’t normally stumble; only when he was scared out of his wits.
‘Alex!’ Argos growled from upstairs and the girls cringed while Alex hastily sprinted to the office. Even Smith had a look that said I feel sorry for you but anything other than that Smith shrugged it off and glanced down at Seraphina.
‘So what brings you here?’ Smith asked.
‘Aiden.’ she said. Ella and Melanie curiously glanced at each other. ‘It’s not like that.’
‘We didn’t say anything.’ Ella said with a bright smile.
‘No we didn’t.’ Melanie said with an evenly bright smile.
Seraphina rolled her eyes and smiled. She liked the girls they were smart. They had to be if they were going to be working under Argos. If things couldn’t be done, then they were the ones who made sure things got done. They were good at their jobs but Seraphina knew that as his solicitors they were no doubt here to clean up the mess, Seraphina knew she made.
‘It’s pretty bad, this time. Isn’t it?’ she asked.
The girls nodded. Melanie began, ‘The only reason why he hasn’t fired you is because you’re on the PASA program. If you weren’t an elite he’d get rid of you. Because of the Dark Cartel numbers rising. We could have a war on Earth in the next three years if we’re not careful. You could have sped that up.’
Red faced Ella stated with a pointed finger, ‘Not to mention. The humans they’re close, close to knowing our existence! You’re lucky what you did was on another planet otherwise you’d be in a lot more trouble than what you are now. And that’s the reason why you’re not allowed on covert missions.’
Seraphina remained silent. She didn’t know what to say. She knew that the missions were important and that they had to be done in a certain way but she also knew that those missions could be done much quicker. It wasn’t her fault if she wanted things done sooner rather than later, later was when trouble always started. ‘I guess I’ll be a little more careful.’ she said.
Smith’s laughter surged.
The girls’ eyes narrowed on him. He quickly composed himself and stifled a laugh, ‘Sorry.’
‘What’s so funny?’ Melanie questioned, with a flat tone.
‘Were you unable to believe her statement?’ Ella asked, a single brow raised.
‘That’s not it.’ Smith managed, Seraphina could tell he was uncomfortable and she knew he was laughing at her.
‘Anyways, do you guys know where Aiden is?’
‘In the lab as usual.’ Smith avowed with a leering smile. ‘You should know where to find him by now.’
Seraphina’s features heated, she knew he was in there but she needed confirmation. She quickly turned her heel and fled the Central Control Unit.
On her way to the labs, Seraphina kept contemplating what everyone had said. She stopped beside a glass panel that stretched along the wall and looked out at the garden below, but as she looked up there were thick hard dirt walls all around her, closing her in. Almost suffocating her.
She turned her heel and continued further down the corridor unaware of other pair of feet on approach. With her mind distant, she bumped into someone and heard a deep masculine voice—one she wasn’t quite familiar with. ‘Are you alright?’ he asked. She glanced up and all she could see was a pair of deep blue eyes staring back at her lined in skin that was a smiliar shade as hers, it was an unusual combination. She couldn’t help but stare right back at them. Subconsciously, she stepped back and apologised. ‘No problem.’
The man, straightened up and released her. He moved past her and continued down the hall. Seraphina glanced over her shoulder and watched as he rounded a corner and disappeared from sight. She couldn’t quite help it but there was something lovely about his ocean blue eyes.
Pulling her mind from distracting thoughts, she hurried down the hall and made her way to the science section of the Compound. Seraphina stood before two double sliding doors and scanned her card on the side of the door, the door beeped and the doors slid open.
Inside were marble floors and steel tables, spotless benches and very winding experiments flooding the entire laboratory but she knew this was only one of the many laboratories scattered throughout the underground building. As Seraphina slid her way through the room, she came to a door than entered a theory room and saw a man—a familiar man cladded in the usual white laboratory coat. ‘Aiden.’ she said. He spun around and almost lit up. She smiled at him. ‘What was so important that I miss my first day at Uni? Hmm?’
‘You haven’t missed it, the day’s not over yet. It’s only the morning.’ he confirmed.
Seraphina held back a sigh. She knew he knew that there was more to it in the morning than what high school was letting on. ‘So what did you find out?’ she asked, changing the subject.
‘Well for starters, did you know Vampieruz cells recoils under artificial sunlight?’
‘Isn’t that the same reason why they can’t go into the actual sun?’ Seraphina asked.
Aiden’s brown eyes sparkled in delight. ‘That’s exactly right.’
‘So what’s new?’ Seraphina asked the scientist who like Melanie and Ella just finished university but he had a little more experience in the lab than the other candidates that applied for the job.
‘This,’ he said and held up a pearly white scale the size of the tip of her finger. Seraphina gasped as the light triggered a little rainbow halo. ‘You see it don’t you?’
‘Are scales able to do that, let alone are they able to be that white?’ Seraphina inquired, staring at the scale.
‘Normally scales that we know of are different colours but not white, parts of them can be black and perhaps silver too but that’s it.’ Aiden said. ‘Isn’t it fascinating?’
Considering the scale, she was almost hypnotised by that faint rainbow. ‘It is.’
‘Look at what happens when I add light to it.’ Aiden said. He handed Seraphina a pair of dark goggles and instructed her to keep them with her. He placed the scale in a petri dish with long tweezers and headed towards a door, she had seen on her way here. It was lined in black and yellow tape around the door almost like a warning to keep everyone out. Seraphina wondered if she should be in the room or not. ‘This way.’ Aiden pushed.
When Seraphina entered the room, she saw the room was split in two but with access to the other room. It was a steel door that divided the room. But from what she saw, the room appeared to have a large glass panel to look into the other room she could tell was used for experiments. Aiden opened the steel door that was closest to her and headed into the other section of the room. He placed the scale on the table and quickly jogged out. ‘This part’s exciting.’ he said. ‘Do you have your goggles?’ Seraphina held them up. ‘Good. I’m going to set up the environment and I want you to pay close attention to that rainbow.’
‘Okay.’
Seraphina watched as Aiden played with a few dials on the transparent touch screen that sat on the glass. Seraphina could see graphs and charts and a lot of information—written in that language Neruden. ‘Put the glasses on.’ he instructed.
Seraphina placed on her goggles and the room lit up but she could still see the scale. What caught her eye was the scale stationed on the steel table in the middle of the room. The rainbow, she saw, grew and grew until it was as large as the other section of the room. Seraphina gasped. Then within a moment she felt a wave pulse through her and set her off balance. Once the light died down Seraphina pulled off her glasses and asked, ‘What was that?’ she asked.
‘That’s what we’re trying to figure out.’ he said. ‘Though most of the research is done with Dr. Legato and her team. I get to test it every now and again and see what environment it can with stand and so far, it can withstand all.’
‘Including the gaseous environment say—of Jupiter.’
‘Yes.’
‘How so?’ she asked and he moved through the steel door and over to the experimental area and carried the scale in a transparent dish. ‘Take a close look at it,’ he offered and held up the scale. Seraphina squinted and saw small rainbow lines they were a little transparent but they were there. They could be seen by the naked eye.
‘What is that?’
‘From what we’ve gathered its veins or rather capillaries.’
‘What are capillaries?’ she asked and Aiden smiled a small smile.
‘They’re like veins only smaller they supply blood to the vital tissue like your skin.’
‘What are capillaries doing on a scale?’ she asked. ‘I thought they were underneath it.’
‘Normally they are but when it comes to new scales—the capillaries are on the top later they pull away under the scales.’
‘That’s so cool.’ Seraphina breathed.
‘I know right.’ he said. ‘Before I forget.’ he said and headed back into the theory room. He returned to the crimson scale of the Vampieruz that sat untouched in the petri dish. ‘This scale you found on that ship turns out to be a purebred scale.’
‘Which means?’ she asked before she answered herself, ‘The person who attacked the ship was a purebred Vampieruz.’ Aiden nodded. ‘I have to let the Chief know.’ she said.
‘He already does. I told him before you came.’ Aiden said. ‘I messaged you simply because I know that you’d find this interesting and perhaps you may know what to do in the future with this type of knowledge.’ Seraphina smiled and turned her heel, quitting the laboratory thanking Aiden, she headed out of the compound and past the desk where Sarah sat. Seraphina signed out of the book as she knew Sarah was the one to sign her in—most of the time. At ten past ten she hopped on her bike she headed to the human University.
Seraphina had finally made it to her class and settled down, she had missed fifteen minutes of her next class but she managed to miss at least one of her classes before that started at nine that morning. She knew she’d have to contact the lecturer and get any documents she may need for the semester. Today’s class was Anatomy and Physiology.
PASA had bought her textbooks for the semester so she didn’t have to worry about those small things. Instead, she opened her text book Human Anatomy & Physiology 10th Edition by Marieb to the required page and began to study.
As class progressed, the ground shook and her phone beeped the problem was it wasn’t her phone. Her heart leaped. No please no, she thought, as she scanned the hall—no one was in sight. Packing up her books. She grabbed the handout she was given and left the class in a hurry aware of the topic she had to study that evening, she was given the chance. She stopped beside a wall and pulled out her diary, she opened the page to today’s date which was thirteenth of March and quickly scribbled down the topic and the page number she needed to study. Placing her diary back into the bag, she pulled out her communicator device which was pretty much what allowed her to keep in contact with her teammates and to track any Outlanders that teleported through one of the portals without permission.
As she opened her Communicator, she saw several blue dots—there were tonnes of them and some of them overlapped to create even large uneven dots—these were human beings with little to no energy in their system. Seraphina saw a large red dot, flaring up in the distance. It was approximately five hundred metres away but close enough to be considered a priority. She ran down the hall and past several students who eyed her with disbelief and utter annoyance.
She slowed to a stroll once she reached the gym and looked around. She was right on top of the red dot and immediately looked up. There was nothing on the ceiling so she knew it had to be the roof. She jogged over to the girls’ toilet and transitioned—into a blue scaly suit, with armour, a silver utility belt and a silver cloak. She unbolted the door and noticed to her relief no one else was in there. She skimmed the mirror and saw her long silver hair and ocean blue eyes that glowed a little as her eyes darted around the glass panel. She saw her bright red lips and saw her coffee coloured skin looked too smooth to touch.
Hearing a few voices nearby, she panicked. Someone was coming. Or rather a few someone’s. Using her power, she literally camouflaged into the background, thanking her alien heritage she floated into the air and towards the ceiling. She saw two girls enter the bathroom and head to the cubicles. Quickly, she exited the bathroom, with her bag still on her shoulder.
She floated to the roof and de-camouflaged not before long pulling out a cube. Seraphina opened the cube and placed it under her bag. Pressing the red button, the cube absorbed the bag and compressed it—she knew her books and everything else would still be the same size once she reversed it.
She placed the small cube in her utility belt and glanced up. Her silver armour and cloak gleamed under the sun and there in the air was an Outlander—a Harpy to be exact. Its ash black battered wings flapped in the air as its slender dull pallid skin was wrapped in ripped sheets while she appeared to almost rot at the sight. She was hideous and Seraphina knew what she was after. The humans or rather daunts as they are known.
She was after the unique energy that gave humans their life and their excessive strength. It was what they considered adrenaline that the Harpy was after as it was a hormone that was able to stop her flesh from rotting. Normally, Harpies would use animal blood but not in this instance—as Seraphina knew her flesh was rotting at the sight.
The Harpy’s eyes landed on a brunette girl who Seraphina noticed as a little young to be at the university. Taking another look, that girl was exactly that—a girl. She was a teenager no older than sixteen.
‘Hey!’ Seraphina barked at the Harpy who’s head slowly turned towards her. The look in its black eyes was so frightening that she knew if she stared too long the Harpy would dart at her for staring but then the next thing Seraphina said caused the Harpy to screech and fly towards her at rocketing speeds, ‘I’m looking at you. You, ugly sac of shit.’
The sixteen-year-old, on the ground, glanced over her shoulder to make out what that ear piercing scream was. She glanced around again and saw other students were just as confused but because there was nothing too see, she headed to her parents while the other students continued to do what they were supposed to do.
Seraphina furiously battled the Harpy, airborne, as its claws scratched at her and her eyes locked onto the sight of the monster. ‘That’s enough!’ growled a male voice.
Seraphina glanced behind her but held the Harpy at arms width as it snapped its teeth at her as they floated in midcourse. The Harpy’s wings flapped and Seraphina saw a Nefaliem man—with long silver hair, piercing ocean blue eyes and blue scales, like her, that started from his jawline covering every inch of his body.
‘Excuse me?’ she said and kicked the Harpy who was pushed a good few metres away. She turned to the man and began, ‘Look I don’t know—’ Seraphina began but the Harpy had slogged her so hard she had she landed on the steel roof of the building.
The man regarded Harpy whose eyes landed on him. ‘You look rather lovely tonight.’ he said and the Harpy battered her eyelashes.
Seraphina crouched on the spot where she landed before zooming towards the Harpy again and this time she punched the Harpy a couple of times. Before sending a spinning kick that sent the Harpy further away from her before. The girls flew towards each other and within a moment and a flash of silver the man stood before them—or rather floated before them. ‘Enough.’ he said, literally between them.
‘Why are you stopping me?’ Seraphina asked, tension and anger evident in her voice. She turned her hostile gaze on the Harpy who screeched as their eyes locked. ‘Blow me!’
‘Simple. I’ll explain it later.’ he casually said as the Harpy dithered her wings and flew towards the school grounds. No one was in sight and the stranger cursed as he floated towards the Harpy, his silver cloak floating behind him as he descended.
Before decline, he hid within view while Seraphina, remained where she was. Unaware of someone recording her. Seraphina for good measure, decided to camouflage and watched as the man disguised the Harpy and brought her to where Seraphina hovered. They could see each other and could sense each other’s energy levels so they knew without even looking where each other were. ‘You are dismissed Squire.’ he said with authority in his voice.
Seraphina was taken back. ‘Wait you haven’t told me anything,’ she said and watched as a portal opened. He zoomed inside and vanished from sight.
Seraphina floated, staring at the sight than cursed.
