What is irony? In my case, it's what is happening right now. You are reading about me, a guy who is entirely not interesting. I don't have any quirks, any tragic past story or anything. No one would even know who I was if it wasn't for the beautiful, extraordinary Eleanor Wilkens.
Well, what could be so special about her? I mean, her name does sound like a 1960s grandmother who used to live on a farm. She looks normal, at least on the outside. She had blond, shoulder length hair. Come to think of it, I think she once had pigtails even. She had plain brown eyes. You couldn't even call them mocha or chocolate. They were more of a dark polluted night sky.
When I first saw her, I was sitting on a bench in my mother's rose garden. The leaves were blowing in the wind fast enough that I could hardly hear the police sirens streaming by. As they got closer, that's when I saw her. I could see her through a hole in the hedges in the front of the yard. She was running down the street being chased by the police. Fear wasn't even in my mind during this, but it was replaced with pure curiosity. As she finally reached in front of the house, she jumped over the hedge fence with such force I thought she might of broke it. She crouched down low and put her finger to her lips, as if pleading with me not to give her location away. I couldn't let her be found before I could ask her some questions. I needed to know why a girl like her was under arrest. She looked so plain. The police just drove past, probably thinking she had went down the alley on the side of the garden.
We just stayed there looking at each other wide-eyed as the sirens faded out. She got up and came over to me after the coast was obviously clear. She was red in the face and panting. I got up and offered her my seat on the bench. It was small and only had enough room for one. She held her hand up, finally speaking.
"Okay this isn't the Titanic, we can both sit. Just move over," she said as I was stunned by her sudden bluntness.
She looked so... innocent. I sat back down while leaving a bit at the end where she slumped down. Her breathing, I noticed, began to get less rugged as she rested.
The more I looked at her, the less plain and innocent she looked. I noticed the gage earrings that she displayed on her body, which was the same gold color as the pentagram tattoo on her leg, right below where her shorts ended.
My silence was broken after a second of her sitting next to me. "So did you plan for my house to be your getaway method or were you just going with the flow?"
She just chuckled. "Sorry about that, I can't really go to jail again. Your house just happened to be the only one on this block with a fence."
She didn't answer any of the many questions I had in my mind. I wanted to ask, "What do you mean, Again?" I didn't want to know honestly. If there was a notorious murderer in my mothers backyard right now I would like to rather be oblivious to that little fact. I settled for a slightly more innocent sounding question.
"What were they after you for anyway?" I questioned. She looked at me like I was an idiot.
"Wow, okay, so you look like a frat boy but I was hoping you weren't as oblivious as one." She said and scoffed while holding up a six-pack of beer she must've been holding the entire time. My face had probably shown my surprise because she next said, "Don't worry, I threw a twenty at the cashier before I ran, so I didn't steal it. I'm only 19, you can put two and two together. I honestly should find a new ID guy though. My current one sucks majorly," she rambles off and the paused. "Oh yeah, I may be pretty messed up, but I do have manners. Hey, I'm Eleanor Wilkens."
"Um..Yeah. I'm David," I mumbled. I wasn't sure how to react to the situation still. A fugitive was in my mother's garden sitting right up against me. Her breath could be felt on my neck and the tingles spread all throughout my body. She was like a euphoria I never knew existed.
"So David, do you have a last name, or?" she said waking me out of my trance. Before I could even get the first syllable out, the thing i have been dreading happened.
"David Michaels Humphrey! Where are you?" My mother screamed while busting out the back door of the house. When she found us she grabbed me in her arms and held me tight - Uncomfortably tight. "Oh my sweet, sweet boy! Don't scare me like that. I heard the sirens and I thought the worse. I read on the news about this one girl who robbed a store and gunpoint down the street. I thought they may of got you. I'm telling you, get inside when you hear stuff like that I..." I cut her off before she began to cry.
"Mother I'm fine. I was just talking to... a friend." I glared over to Eleanor. I could see she somehow hid the six pack while my mother was in her 'mental breakdown.' That was a good thing though. To my mother, basically everything about Eleanor was an abomination to her God. Beer should not ruin this anymore that it will be.
"Hello, I'm Elle. David was interested in joining a bible retreat based off of our school and I was telling him about the different journey options we had for him to partake in. I'm sorry, I thought he had informed you on this." Lenore, now Elle, had said with a bright smile on her face and shook my mother's hand. It was almost funny how she had changed into a completely unrecognizable person that I knew from the previous five minutes with her. My mothers earlier skeptical face had turned into astonishment.
"Is this true David? It's just hard to believe that a girl with a pentagram on her leg could be a leader of a bible group." My mother said while pointing at the obvious tattoo on Eleanor's leg, scowling in disgust.
"I'm sorry Ma'am. I was hanging out with the wrong sorts of people a couple years ago. I haven't had the money to get it removed. I hope you will forgive me." Eleanor looked like she was going to cry. Either she is entirely not what I thought, or she is the best actress i have ever seen.
"Anyway... When is this retreat that David so happily forgot to mention to me?" My mother said, still not believing this whole scenario. Eleanor looked at me as if she had finally ran out of answers. I saw her face get red as she blushed and I felt like I needed to say something in this conversation.
"It depends on which path I take. They are on different dates." I quickly said and Eleanor took a breath of relief.
My mother just nodded in understanding as she wished us the best while we were talking and she went back inside the house, after telling us to be careful of course. All was quiet again in the garden. For a long time neither of us talked and we just sat. Eleanor looked down at her shoes as she got up.
"I should go, I don't want to de-bless this family anymore than I have," she said and began to go towards the gate. I ran towards her and grabbed her shoulder gently.
"Please stay. I have way too many questions," I pleaded. She just entered my life and for the first time, I felt like I saw my grey world in color. Little did I know at the time, that was one of the most common feelings I would have with Eleanor.
"I'm sorry," She said, and she rushed out of the garden. She pricked her shoulder on the roses on her way out. In that moment the rose felt sort of beautiful with the blood dripping on the thorn. The thought quickly left my mind as the only thing I could think of was her. Would I ever see her, this magnificent spark of chaos and life, again in my life?619Please respect copyright.PENANAZYNLdK6JgA
