Caber stared, awestruck by the sight before him. “There are two of ya?” He asked, incredulous.
Gideon glared flatly at him, clearly not pleased by the outburst. Struggling to control his temper, Gideon responded, “No, there is not two of me. This is my brother, Killian.” He gave a sweeping gesture to the man next to him.
“Well that’s a relief!” Caber grinned, as Gideon’s face began to grow red with anger. Caber ignored Gideon’s furious gaze as he continued. “One of ya is bad ‘nough. No offense, boss.”
Killian, who had remained silent throughout the exchange, now spoke up, talking solely to Gideon. “And who is this again?”
Killian did indeed, look much like his brother. They both shared the same dark brown hair color and dark eyes. To Caber, Killian seemed more threatening than his brother. Gideon was short-tempered and an angry person all around, but he was easy to deal with. There was something more sinister about Killian. At the very least, he seemed to be cleverer than Gideon ever was.
Gideon drew in a deep breath, a small attempt to suppress his rising anger. “This is Caber, unfortunately one of the many people under my command. Much to the disappointment of everyone here, he has somehow managed to remain breathing.”
Killian smiled darkly, “I think I see why you’d be disappointed by this.”
Caber continued to grin as he listened to them talk. He wasn’t bothered by their silent threats. He knew Gideon hated him, but Caber doubted that he would ever actually try to dispose of him. In the end, it was all talk. “If ya want boss, I can just leave. I could go an’ help out Tasha or somethin’.”
“That would be best, given the time.” Gideon disappeared down the hall, followed by his brother.
Caber watched them go, still with a grin on his face. Once they had disappeared from sight, Caber sighed and turned headed down the opposite direction. Natasha could be a difficult person to find when she wanted to be, but Caber knew all her favorite places. She was one of his few friends in this place, but even then, he didn’t trust her fully.
He moved quickly, heading towards the flight of stairs that led to the roof. As he stepped out into the cold afternoon air, a low growl came from above him. Stepping quickly away from the door, Caber turned, looking up.
Natasha perched on the edge of the roof, her teeth bared. Her light brown hair was a wild mess like always, bits of leaves caught in its midst. Her gaze lightened as she watched Caber, and the growling stopped. She launched herself forward, landing lightly on the ground before him. As she stood, she greeted him warmly, “Caber, what brings you up here?”
“I dunno, really. Guess I just wanted someone to talk to.” He replied, shrugging. “Giddy’s mad again, an’ I thought I probably shouldn’t push my luck.”
Natasha smiled, “That was uncharacteristically wise of you.”
Caber grinned, “I rather like my life, an’ Giddy had someone he claimed to be his brother with ‘im. Ya should’ve seen their faces. There were definitely unspoken threats there.”
“That can’t be the only reason you came up here.”
“But it is.” Caber insisted, his grin still upon his lips.
From somewhere in the building below them, a sudden shout of anger broke apart their conversation, “CABER!”
