My heart sinks more the closer I got to Ollivanders. Getting a new wand as a fourth year made me feel so irresponsible. I watch a few moments as soon-to-be first years walk in and out of the shop, smiles on their faces as they wave their new wands. Before I could continue to get inside, I found myself on the ground and hit in the head by two very heavy books.
"Ow!" I rub the back of my head pushing myself off the ground. The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 4, by Miranda Goshawk, laid beside me opened pages down. I sigh as I pick it up to give it to the person who dropped it only to be met by dull eyes and straight broad shoulders, a hand held out for it. I knew this boy to be more brawn than brains, Gregory Goyle.
Our eyes were locked for a mere moment before he finally cleared his throat. "My book Ledbury..." he says a little more stern than what he seemed to have meant. I shove it in his hands.
"You should probably be careful with that, it could've given me a concussion," I tell him standing up and pulling my blonde curls out of its scrunchie to help my head relax from the strain and the whack it took. He merely shrugs.
"That would be your problem, not mine," he says before turning to walk off. He stops a moment then looks back to me. "You're lucky I recognized you, or else I would've thought you a muggle." With that, he continued on walking. I look down at my outfit, a pair of overalls, a white shirt and now a scrunchie on my wrist. I couldn't have looked to close to the muggles outside could I?
I place my hands in my pockets and walk into the wand shop. Two first-year boys were laughing and smiling as they each got their new wands. Taking off passed me before their parents even paid. Soon it was just me and the old man who everyone knew. He looks up at me with a comforting smile.
"Ah, Miss Ledbury! A pleasure to finally meet you!" He says walking over with his hand out. I take it gently and shake it, my nervousness growing into a lump in my throat. "I take it you're here to get that wand?" he asks innocently. I nod. "Do you remember what kind of wand you had?" he asks looking over at his millions of shelves.
"Sorry sir, I can't remember, the wand I had last was my sisters, and it didn't like me very much," I tell him with disappointment towards myself. "I never got to have the Ollivander experience..."
"If I remember correctly her wand was Holly and Veela Hair core, the only wand I ever made with such a core." He shuddered. "a temperament that core has, she had one of my oldest wands." He goes to the back for a few moments coming back with a small box "alright dear, let's try this wand." he hands it to me. It was rather rough along the bottom but the feel around it looked very similar to that of my sisters.
Must be Holly.
I gave it a twirl causing the power to go in and out throwing boxes everywhere.
"Uhm..."
"Guess not." He holds the box out to me and I place it in there. "Seems that Holly isn't your suit, not to worry though, I don't always get it on my first try." He goes back to search for another wand. He comes back handing me a wand that glistened slightly with effects of beautiful roses carved in it. I smile going to give it a twirl but it flew out of my hands and back into the box. I frown, it was a really pretty wand. "Seems rosewood isn't your type either," he goes looking for a few more boxes. "Tell me Miss Ledbury, is there something that happens at school you much enjoy?" he asks looking through each wand. I think for a moment.
"Well, Transfiguration is one of my favorite classes." At that, he smiles.
"Ah! Now we're getting somewhere he comes down with three different wands on hand." He hands me the first wand and takes a few steps back, I give it a twirl and jumped back as the wand shocked her.
"Nope." I quickly returned the wand back into its box. "Not that one." Ollivander chuckles.
"Try this one..." I gave it a wave only to be thrown back into a bookshelf.
"Ow! Bloody hell!" I cover my mouth quickly. "S-sorry..."
"Not to worry," he chuckles taking the wand gently and putting it away. "Alright, try this one," he says handing it to me. I smile softly looking at the intricate design of tiny swirls engraved into the grain, I give it a tiny little spin little orange lights began to dazzle around us, and the dust that caked onto the shelves transfigured into little gold flakes. I giggle slightly with joy. "Extravagant! Fir wood, Phoenix feather, 12 1/4" slightly springy. Remember that now, dear, this wand is yours."
"Thank you!" I squeal slightly digging through my pockets for my money.
"No need dear, the first time is always free." I look up at him with a raised eyebrow.
"But I am a fourth year,"
"Yes, but your first wand wasn't like this one, all part of the 'Ollivander Experience'." he winks. I smile gratefully at him.
"Thank you so much." With that, I take off running now acting like one of the first-years from before.
