Anna shrieked as white hot pain flashed across her cheek and left her facedown on the forest floor. She gasped and gingerly touched her face, the wound already leaving smears of blood behind.
Kaine’s laughter echoed around the woods. His voice coming from almost every direction at once.
Anna sat up. Her hand still resting on the gash on her cheek as she closed her eyes and began to chant.
“The crescent moon,
The scattered pieces,
The moving hands—“
She let out another scream as more pain cut her chest. Doubling over, she panted and glanced around the dark clearing. Her eyes settling on a tall figure.
Kaine walked over wearing a smirk. “You really are predictable, aren’t you?” He sneered. He froze, his eyes widening in disbelief.
Kaine stumbled forward with a shout. Anna rose to her feet, hand still clutching her chest.
“Lindsey?” She whispered as her friend walked out into the pale moonlight.
Lindsey looked at Anna before turning her gaze to Kaine. He was slumped in the mud, his groans audible to Anna.
”Finish it, Anna.” Lindsey yelled. “Finish it right now!”
Anna closed her eyes and began again.
“The crescent moon,
The scattered pieces,
The moving hands,
The changing faces.
Darkness shadows the ever-burning flame.
She alone can end the deadly game“
Anna slumped forward, unconscious as Lindsey fought Kaine. She ducked as he grabbed a dagger and tried to slash her face.
“It’s over Kaine,” Lindsey cried. “Anna has delivered the final omen. You’ve lost.”
