We set off on a cool, October evening to get milkshakes and see a movie. Cliché dates were okay with us when you came from not-so-cookie-cutter families. My milkshake was vanilla, as plain as myself with my short brown hair and quiet demeanor. Peaches got a strawberry with whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles; she was colorful person, her favorite color being orange. After milkshakes we made our way to the movie theater, pinkies locked. We were short girls, we couldn't risk losing each other.
While sitting in our theater seats, I lifted up the arm rest and Peaches slid closer to me. Butterflies whirled in my stomach and her body heat tingled all over me as she laid her head on my shoulder. I tiptoed my fingers over to hers and gently locked them together. She was mine and we were together; everything was right in the world and nothing could tear us apart... Except for a thing called 'Reality'.
In reality, Peaches chose a little squeaker from University-ville, whose hobbies included misery, all-nighters and self-destructive behavior, over me. My poor Peaches never stood a chance against him and his need for parental-like assistance. So, I guess we'll call this the "What could have been" first date.
