My breathing was getting haggard but I didn't slow down, weaving through the thick undergrowth to try and lose the bullets hunting us down. I grunted as one clipped my shoulder, but ignored it, leaping over a fallen tree. ~Well, I always knew I'd probably lose my life one day trying to do the right thing.~ I skidded to a stop as the leader of the hunters I had fallen into cut me off, his gun aimed at my forehead. I ducked to the side and he fired, I braced myself, shouldering him out of my way as I bulldozed past. I was close to a pack border now, or I should be...I think. Damn it. A rope with weights around it wrapped around my legs and the pup in my arms was sent tumbling as I fell hard. I bent and cut through the rope immediately, dashing for the pup as a hunter reached out for him. I socked him in the face, sending him grunting away from us, but before I could scoop up the pup, more were on us. "This ends now." The leader said angrily, coming over with my head in his sights once more. I looked up at him through my blond hair and grinned, blood dripping from the corner of my mouth. The muzzle of my gun finally caught his eye by my side, his eyes widening before I pulled the trigger, his head jerking back as the bullet hit home. There were shouts around us and I stood, drawing my other gun. Bullets rained. I fired as fast as I could, each shot a kill shot. I got hit in the shoulder, one winging my cheek. Another hit my side, then my hip. One to my thigh brought me to my knees. One to the back of my shoulder and another to my back. The last one to my hand forced the gun from my hand before I killed the last hunter, a youth barely in his twenties.
~I can't believe I survived that.~ I was a lucky bastard, at least for now. Who knows how fast I would find my death as I bled out. I scooped up the puppy in one hand and stumbled to my feet, making my bloody way from tree to tree, toward what should be a pack territory. My vision was getting blurry as I focused on simply moving forward. The hand that I held the maned wolf puppy to my chest with was shaking, as was the rest of my body. Blood dripped down from the corner of my mouth as I panted for breath, but I kept moving forward. Finally, finally I saw wolves appear before me. Three grey wolves, one with a scar over his left eye, and the last wolf was a red wolf. I dropped to my knees, setting the puppy down, who turned to look at me. "Is this...Red...Heart...Pack." The wolves looked at one another as one of the grey wolves stepped forward. "Take care of this kid...would you?"
