Following the climax of afterward, Linus has finally gotten to move on, the Nexus is defeated and Blight locked away, and Memmi is invited to be the new leader of the afterward. The story ends with Tammy making the decision whether or not they try to put Calvin back where he belongs, or if they'll stay Tammy in the afterward under new management. There is zero indication given as to which option she takes, that was meant to be entirely ambiguous and up to the reader's discretion, though I've personally picked my side of this battle. That said, if I ever actually return to the afterward to tell more of its story, I don't think I'd do it from the perspective of Tammy or even include a reference to her either way. Nearly every recurring character has a past with the afterward, but many more also have a future there. There's a lot of ideas I only explored once or twice, and many different ideas I scrapped from the story in some capacity. At the moment, I have no plans to continue telling the story of afterward, I want to finish New Infinity's sequel and I have plans to start publishing an anthology of shorter works online, so I might return to the world of the afterward in one of them. I guess we'll have to wait and see, won't we?
afterward has been an absolute joy to write, probably one of my favorite projects as a whole. It changed how I approach writing, and while I have been feeling just the littlest bit bitter it hasn't performed as well online as I'd hoped, I still feel confident in what I've accomplished and many of the people that have read it have had nothing but praise for its adamant strangeness. While I am a bit sad to leave the world I've created behind, I continually wonder what it will be that hits me like this again, and sets me on an adventure to open another OpenOffice document, label the top chapter one, and then keep going through two and beyond. I hope you enjoyed afterward and this look into how I came up with many of its aspects and some notable pieces of commentary, I hope you have a good day, and always remember that even in the darkest of times, in the most brutal of storms, to see the storms for the rainbow.
