A Fallen Rose by Elle Night begins with a short and simple—yet very effective—quote that easily sets the slightly somber mood for the rest of the story. The story follows Rose Austin as she adjusts to her new life and runs from her old one.
One of the things I look for in a story are well-written characters. The characters have to be able to interest the reader and move the plot along. And while Night's characters haven't had much time to develop yet—there are only four chapters so far, after all—they are definitely far beyond interesting. Also, I'm really enjoying the ethnic diversity.
Rose's narrative also balances her gloomy (to say the least) outlook on life and the lightheartedness of youth (nevermind how terribly cheesy that sounds) very well. Her slightly philosophical tendencies offer great insight into her perspective of the world, and she's also fairly easily to relate to (with the exception of whatever happened in her past).
There are a few mistakes in the chapters (wrong word, missing word), but these are few and far between, so they don't detract much from the story.
I've really enjoyed what Night has posted so far, and it seems like she's trying to return from her short hiatus. I hope to read more of the story. I highly recommend reading A Fallen Rose.
