"Hey, pass over an apple there would ya?" A small framed boy with blonde hair asked, hand held out lazily towards his company.
"No, you've already eaten two in the past half an hour. At this rate we'll have no food by the end of the day." Came the reply, another boy that sat a little sturdier than his blonde friend, auburn hair covering his face.
"I'm a growing man Rodney! I need to keep my strength up, ya know." Whined the blonde boy.
"And I'm not? Keep it to yourself Mitchell, we're both suffering here." Rodney replied, tipping his hat over his eyes and resting back.
"This is so boring, why do we have to do all the reconnaissance work?" More whining coming from Mitchell.
"Because you two are the idiot low lives, remember?"
"Ah look who it is," Rodney began, lifting his hat just enough to peak at the newcomer at the base of the tree. "Little Miss Sunshine come to save the day."
Suddenly there was a thud, a knife swaying from the force of impact into the wood just before his foot.
"Hey watch it! That was almost my damn foot." Rodney was obviously not enjoying the idea of having to lick his ego wounds had it actually hit him.
"Next time I'll make sure it hits." I chuckled, proceeding to climb the tree to their scouting hide out. "Wow, you two really know how to make yourselves comfortable." I threw the comment as I got to the top, trying my best to find a branch to perch on.
"Would be better if there was more food." Mitchell finding another perfect opportunity to complain about his grumbling stomach.
"Is he still on about that?" I bumped Rodney to direct the question at him.
"Yip, hasn't shut up since this morning." Not moving in the slightest.
"You two are just rude, ya know." Mitchel crossly crossed his arms, not liking being picked on again.
I reached for my knife, wedging it out of the wood and began cleaning the dirt from under my nails. "You need to learn not to take things so personally, ya know." Rodney smiled at my joke pointed at Mitchel.
"Jump in a hole and die Laila." He added a pout to his little tantrum.
I laughed, throwing my head back and enjoying the moment. "Relax Mitchel, it's all in good sport." I looked down at the movement below us, watching a few people working away the hours in the wheat fields. "So anything new to report?"
"Nope, nothing. Nothing suspicious, nothing out of the ordinary and nothing that's 'caught our eye'." Rodney air quoted himself, sounding both rude and offended at the same time, obviously mocking whoever gave them their instructions.
"Why do I get the feeling that we're not even doing real work and we were given some stupid job to do so we were out of the big shots hair?" Mitchel asked, back to his old self, always questioning people.
"Because you're probably right, and here I'm stuck baby sitting you two idiots. Can you imagine how I feel?" I stated more than asked, still nonchalantly picking at my nails.
"That makes my insides so warm and fuzzy knowing that we mean so much to you and the organisation." Rodney chirped half heartedly.
"Hey don't blame me," I shot my hands up in mock defense, "Blame it on Odette. She has it in for all of us youngsters."
"Especially you." Stated Mitchel, starting with his thinking out loud pattern. "What did you even do to her that she can't stand you being around?"
I chuckled, enjoying the banter we could have away from the ears and eyes back at the base. "You know what, if I knew myself I probably wouldn't be in the situation I am in at the moment."
"What did you do this time, kill another one of the witch's cats?" Rodney joined in, realising that he wasn't going to get much quiet time.
"I wish," I scoffed at the memory of shooting her annoying ginger cat, "It's not my fault that she had a demon cat that kept attacking me. If I didn't know any better I bet she trained the damn thing to eat my face on sight."
"I remember how that thing stalked you day in and day out. That was truly a demon cat from hell." Rodney added helpfully, trying not to let me sound like some cruel animal abuser.
"But I like her new cat, it's a lot better behaved and it actually likes me. So no it wasn't the cat this time." I took my time putting away my knife in its leg strap near my calf.623Please respect copyright.PENANAriJkVwoFgd
"Then what was it?" Mitchel had gotten himself quite engrossed with the story.623Please respect copyright.PENANAC8bDVcpi8C
"I don't know, maybe I just looked at her the wrong way or she's in a bad mood about something else and knows she can take it out on me." I shrugged, not really too stuck on the reasons.623Please respect copyright.PENANAzHEcUOF7SC
"She acts like she owns you most of the time." Rodney added, his voice filled with sleep now. "Is this the reason why you're out here with us?"623Please respect copyright.PENANA89nHdkJ9OT
"You weren't sent here with a reason?" Mitchel looked at me flabbergasted. 623Please respect copyright.PENANAsMrNhwRmlX
I laughed at him. "Yes I came here out of my own good will and the kindness in my heart to spend the day with you idiots."623Please respect copyright.PENANAbf1aobj3y2
"I resent that." Mitchel had his face in a frown almost immediately. "But honestly I think you're the only senior to us that can call us that but still treat us as equals." He looked out to the fields, mulling over his statement.623Please respect copyright.PENANAyatunxj3rZ
"Yeah but if you take into consideration, between all the seniors, I have absolutely no power over anyone but the two of you. So even if I wanted to push you out of this tree right now I would still get into trouble." I feinted a push on Rodney, catching him as he shocked himself awake.623Please respect copyright.PENANAqdQHllb39O
"Woman! I will beat you! Don't ever do that again." Rodney not enjoying his slumber being disturbed.623Please respect copyright.PENANA23xu955pzK
Mitchel and I enjoyed laughing at his bad mood, the aura he always carried around him. "You wish you could beat me at anything." Retorting in my final chuckle.623Please respect copyright.PENANA6sOB54FVfY
"Why are you always so angry Rodney? It makes you look kind of sad, you know." Mitchel added, fueling the fire.623Please respect copyright.PENANA8lD8l89TyF
"Shut up, both of you. I like to live like I don't care because I don't. It's not a cry for help, I don't have a little girl inside crying to get out." He turned to me just as a sneaky smile crept on my face. "Don't even go there Laila." He pointed a finger at me, not taking any of my nonsense today.623Please respect copyright.PENANAw1QCGgBugm
"How come Odette and the other seniors get to pick at your inner turmoil but I'm not allowed to." My hand lay on my chest in mock offense. 623Please respect copyright.PENANAy6veS33zCW
"Because," He looked down, trying to think of a decent reason knowing I would be questioning him. "Never mind." He scoffed back in response seeing that there was no way of winning the argument.623Please respect copyright.PENANAluY1IIcqqw
Again Mitchel and I enjoyed laughing at his misery. "Lighten up, Sunshine. The day is almost over." I looked over to the field, something catching my eye.623Please respect copyright.PENANA8ay9RKautr
"Hey, look over there." I pointed towards the direction of the bails of hay that had been stacked throughout the day, creating a slight barrier between our direction and the nearby village. A sharp light flashing every now and then from behind the stack.623Please respect copyright.PENANAUT4d3b7Qsg
"What is it?" Mitchel asked, leaning forward to get a better look.623Please respect copyright.PENANAwJCtSPE8H8
"What the hell?" Rodney now completely focused on it too.623Please respect copyright.PENANA0fifUfoMHy
My hand hit my forehead, shaking it at the two of them. "Its a piece of mirror you idiots, someone's trying to hide behind the hay bails and scout in this direction." Just as I was about to continue explaining my theory, a head popped out from the side.623Please respect copyright.PENANAFSZEF8zFz0
"Bingo." I started getting myself in a position of action.623Please respect copyright.PENANA7XVn8Nnvym
"Wait, what? We're just on reconnaissance, not capture the flag!" Mitchel beginning to stress. 623Please respect copyright.PENANAXH1gQXcauu
"Relax you idiot. There will probably be two of them, three maximum, that are hiding there. We just need to be ready to snatch and grab." At that moment three figures, all in crouched positions, stalked out from behind the bails. They were all wearing darkened clothes, obviously trying to use the dimming light to their advantage.623Please respect copyright.PENANAGCCRYwwh4b
"Ready boys?" I readied myself, getting sure footing on the branch I was perched on. The intruders were heading straight for the tree we were in, completely oblivious to our presence. 623Please respect copyright.PENANAKdphhzQkis
"Ready." Rodney also had his position readied, prepared for the fight ahead.623Please respect copyright.PENANA0FYfHydru7
"Uh, yeah ready." Mitchel not sounding too sure of himself.623Please respect copyright.PENANACVmpVQrde9
At the point where the intruders were almost beneath us, all communication became silent and of hand signals. I gave instructions of who will be taking down who; I would take down the tall bloke who ran with confidence and obviously the leader out of the pack; Rodney would take the butch guy who had problems running far distances and Mitchel would take down his scrawny counterpart.623Please respect copyright.PENANAeSh0vugxAB
At the last moment I signaled down from three. On one we jumped down from our branches, slamming into the intruders. Rodney and I had no problem securing our targets, but Mitchel on the other hand was struggling a bit. His target squirmed and wriggled in and out of Mitchel's grip that he never got a chance to secure him. I eventually walked up to the brawl and placed a heavy boot on the target's back, completely incapacitating him. He still wriggled and squirmed but a lot less which allowed Mitchel to finish off the job.623Please respect copyright.PENANA96xfE1vAcH
We walked off in silence, not wanting to give our identities away to the intruders. we had to lead them as we had blindfolded them all, keeping our journey secret. So we walked all the way back to home, ready for the rewards we would recieve.623Please respect copyright.PENANARuZh8db8P0
