As the ladies sat around the kitchen table with a couple cups of hot coffee Mary Lou took a deep breath, Carlie could tell something was bothering her but didn’t want to ask, just decided to let her tell if she wanted to. “Well my dear, I know your new to our little town, it has a lot of history to it. This town came to life in the 1950’s. It was a silly thing really some guy found what he thought was a gold in a contact vein, of course word spread like wildfire and many people traveled all over to stake their claims on lands. Turned out to be fools gold.” Mary Lou chuckled which made Carlie smile. “So the majority of the people left, but there was a handful that had used all of their savings to move here and stake their claims. From that point the town just grew. Luckily many found the black gold in the area.” 556Please respect copyright.PENANAJIqETGhysb
“I know what that is, Oil” exclaimed Megan as she entered the kitchen to grab a drink, she then joined the ladies at the table. Mary Lou smiled at her, “Yes, my dear.” She reached over and touched Megan's hand. “This house was built in the 1950’s. By the O’neils family. Which are part of my family. But for some reason. Ummm there as been some bad luck here.” Megan looked at her mom with a look of concern. “ What kind?” She asked. Carlie wasn’t sure she wanted to know but could easily see the start of tears forming in Mary Lou’s eyes. So instead of stopping her she prodded her to continue. “Its ok, we would like to know.”556Please respect copyright.PENANARE30S046dY
“Back in 1955 When I was just a young girl my Uncle owned this place for a while, I had a few cousins that lived here Misty was the one I was closer to, we grew up together for a while. But she disappeared after school one day. The town searched all over and couldn’t find her. To this day no one knows what happened. The family moved a year later and the O’neils took the ownership back for the home. I.. I actually moved in for a short time during a bad time in my life, I became a single mother of a son.” It was then that a tear trickled down her face, Carlie seen her quickly wipe it away before Megan seen. Reaching across the table Carlie took Mary Lou’s other hand. This seemed to give her the strength to carry on. “Paul, oh he was a sweet baby, never cried at night, never fussed till we moved here. Then he started having night terrors I eventually moved him into my room, but they never settled down. When he was three he was playing in the yard by the big oak. I went inside for just a minute to grab a drink when I heard him scream. I ran outside and he was unconscious. He went into a coma and has been in one since.”556Please respect copyright.PENANAdtF2l7k1V6
“Oh my gosh, does anyone know why?” Megan asked as Carlie was about to ask the same thing. The chill she felt the night before started to creep over her body. “No, no one has any idea, his brain function is perfectly fine. And oddly he is breathing on his own even to this day, its as if he is in the deepest sleep.” “Where is he?” Carlie finally worked up the nerve to talk.
“At home, I have a caretaker that comes in to help me with him. I hope he will wake someday.” Taking a deep breath Mary Lou continues, “Well anyway, thats the little story of this house, but there are many others about this town, so many stories. You are the first to live here since this, but I wouldn't worry they were just odd things to happen to my family, I think its a curse for my blood line. So you ladies don’t worry.” Right thought Carlie nothing to worry about. Looking at the clock she took in the time and used it to excuse herself and Megan. “Oh Mary Lou, I’m sorry I need to get Megan registered for school before noon. Can we plan to have you over for dinner sometime?” “Sure, I'm sorry I love to talk and have not been in this home in ages. It feels as if nothing has changed. And I would be honored to have dinner with you two, I will bring a desert.”556Please respect copyright.PENANANCdiwLgTYh
All three stood up and cleaned up the table Carlie and Megan both said the goodbyes and went to grab there items they needed for the daily errands. A darkness seemed to follow Carlie as she went into her bedroom, not sure if it was due to the tragedies that this house had or just her nerves settling after the move. Not realizing it she was staring at the widow where the oak was. She walked toward it and went to move the curtain when the warmth enveloped her, in her head she heard a voice again, “No, don’t look at it, keep the curtain closed”. Jumping back as if she touched a hot ember, her eyes darting around the room seeing there was no one there. Goosebumps traveled up her back she grabbed her coat and the papers and quickly walked out the door.556Please respect copyright.PENANA6XKjJkfZ2p
Megan was in her room getting her shoes on, listing to her music with her earbuds on. Feeling as if the old lady that visited was just full of stories, reaching for her coat in the closet she felt as if she was being watched again. Looking around she couldn't seem to find out why or where this feeling was coming from. Turning to shut the door again she missed the eyes in the mirror as the door closed, she didn’t see the anger in the stare. Turning around she seen her family picture hit the floor. Shrugging her shoulders thinking she knocked it over she picked it back up and set it on the dresser, rushing out of the room didn’t glance at it or she would have seen the crack the split her and her mother up.
