"...waking up..." I heard a voice say. "Are the restraints on?"
"Yes, Doctor."
Restraints? Where am I? Fluttering my eyes open, I stared at a blank wall. What is this? Something bright and white flickered intermittently, blinding me slightly.
"I wouldn't do that too long, if I were you," someone chuckled. Turning my head, I saw a human and immediately growled. "Now, now, is that anyway to treat someone that saved your life?" I tried to tilt my head, only to groan in pain. "Easy, now." The voice, recognized as male, knelt down near my right ear. I flicked it nervously. "You've just had a major operation. You are a scientific miracle."
What? What is this place? Where is my pack? I looked around nervously, growling a bit. "Look, I'll be level with you. We found you caught in a hunters trap." I remembered. I had been leading them away from the lack when I was snared. "You were badly injured. That trap nearly killed you. But..." I heard him stand and watched him walked over with something reflective. "It allowed us to perform something miraculous, never been done before." He held the reflective object in front of me.
I saw what looked like a wolf, but he looked more... Human-like. The eyes, the muzzle. I opened my muzzle a bit and was surprised to see he did the same. No. It was me. What has this human done to me?! I growled some more, unsheathing my claws. Sadly, I was still restrained. "Oh, good. Your claws still work. We were concerned about that."
"Wh-where... Pack?" Wonderful. At least I can communicate, somewhat, using horrid human speech.
The Doctor grinned at my effort. "Good, good. Your vocal chords seem to be functioning fine." He dragged a long, thin object across a flat surface.
"P-pack?" I tried again.
He paused. "Your pack?" He rubbed the back of his neck. "Most likely still in the forest. But that's besides the point." He hesitantly came closer. "You are a miracle. You can lead a new life. With us. Humans."
"N-no!" I growled. I struggled against the restraints, trying to free my paws.
The doctor simply sighed, seemingly unperturbed by my display of ferocity. He stuck something in my side. Whining, my head fell back. I was unable to move. "Look... We want to help you. You were practically dead, and we saved your life." He held my paw. "The least you can do is go through with this."
I huffed. I never asked for this. You could have left me to die. "Blink once for yes, twice for no." His... His hand felt comforting, squeezing my paw. I know I'm going to regret this.
I blinked once.
