It started off so normal.
It was Friday. The day everyone anxiously waits for the day to end so they can spend the rest of the weekend with their friends or family.
The time unfortunately dragged on slowly in the musty, dust filled classroom that stank of sweat and chalk.
" Who can tell me who the thirteenth president of the United States was? Anyone?"
It started off so fucking normal it's scary.
Kelly Thompson, one of the rich popular girls of my grade, raised a dainty hand in the air a small smirk making it's way onto her face as the teacher praised her for the right answer.
I on the other hand sat with my foot tapping rhythmically against the light tile floor taking multiple glances at the clock praying time would speed up.
I was excited to spend the weekend with my family, joking and hanging out. I was excited to eat pizza like every other Friday before that. I was excited to be able to spend most of the weekend watching my favorite T.V show, Urban Legends.
How naive I was.
A quick glance at the clock once more.

"-yla. Kayla! Please pay attention or else I will have to resort to disciplinary measures do you understand me?"
I focused my wide brown eyes on Mrs Rocky and nodded frantically. I couldn't afford a detention. Well I never got detention, but I didn't want or need it to happen. Espescially today.
Mrs Rocky nodded and was about to continue with her lesson when a piercing sound resounded throughout the small classroom and down the hallways.
The sounds of shuffling and papers being crumpled caught my ears as Mrs Rocky yelled out the homework assignment due Monday.
Nobody listened.
I quickly stuffed my binder and books into my purple backpack and swung it over my shoulders racing out of the door.
I dodged and weaved in between the students until I reached the glass double doors that would lead me to the outside world.
I burst through the doors and breathed in a whiff of fresh air smiling. Letting it out in one big groan, I raced to my bus as fast as I could. My black Converse were slapping against the concrete sending small jolts of pain through my legs as I raced up the stairs of the yellow vehicle and sat in the first available seat I could find.
As the bus doors swung closed, I leaned back in my set with a smile as I gazed out of the window ignoring the chatter of the other children.

" Mom! Dad! Xavier! I'm home from school!"
I set my brand new purple backpack on the ground near the door and took off my Converse quietly.
" Hello? Anyone home?"
My sock clad feet produced a muffled sound as I walked toward the living room slowly taking off my hoodie and draping it on one of the kitchen chairs in the dining room.
I walked in and saw my dad sleeping quietly the soft whir of the fan above disturbing the peaceful atmosphere of the room.
I let out a sigh of relief. Ok well one person down. Two more to go.
I walked out of the living room careful not to wake my father, and made my way up the wooden staircase to the second floor.
I walked toward my little brothers room and opened the door a crack. Despite his room being a total pigsty at the moment, I could clearly see him with his little kindle and headphones in his ears trying to stifle laughter. I stifled a laugh as well and quietly closed the door.
I guess my mother was asleep in her room or at the store. I yawned and made my way to my own bedroom shutting the door quietly.
I walked across my somewhat dingy white carpet towards my small twin bed. I flopped into it with a sigh and closed my eyes.
Finally.
Relaxation.
I reached over to my nightstand and turned only T.V careful to lower the volume considerably.
I started channel surfing for a few minutes not really finding anything of importance until I saw the news was on.

" It was supposed to be a cure to cancer. Instead it has turned into an unstoppable Virus that has spread from overseas to the U.S. Millions have died, but most are still infected. No one knows the actual side effects and if this can be cured, but our government is doing everything in their power to stop this. But to warrant any further infection, please do not physically touch an infected person and stay inside after hours. We don't know what this Virus can do. I smiled. " It was okay. Boring as usual."
My mom laughed. She had such a beautiful laugh. What I wouldn't give to hear it one last time two years from now.
" Hey did you hear the news today? Apparently there's this Virus going around."
That was my dad.
" Yeah I did on the news this morning. Hopefully it doesn't get to serious."
We sat in silence for a little while longer.
" The Virus won't hurt us right Kay? Because were the superhero family?"
That was my little brother Xavier.
I looked him in his big brown eyes and smiled reaching under the table to squeeze his hand gently.
" No it won't kid. And your right. We are the superhero family. That means were invincible." I said squeezing his hand again.
He smiled at me and nodded releasing his hand from my grasp.
How wrong I was.
Even the strongest of people aren't invincible.
I learned that the hard way.

Kind of boring i know but all first chapters are kind of boring. They lead up to the good stuff. I bet you guys are kind of confused as to why Xavier said were the "superhero family." Well my family has been saying for ages we were going to dress like superheroes for Halloween; my dad as the Hulk, my mom as Wonder Woman, and me as Iron Man.
