The year is 2150. Some in the old days may have thought that this is an advanced age. An age where humans have conquered space and have flying cars. Some may think the world would end by now. They’re all wrong, in a way. But then again, some are right.
No, humans have not conquered space as a whole. We’ve taken a couple planets, but then there are others that fight back. However the world in a way, has ended. Technology has advanced more than ever (and yes, there are flying cars).
You may wonder, how could the world possibly have ended if the human race has advanced so much? No the world has not physically ended. Not yet, anyway. However, for humans, the world has ended. Technology has completely taken over, but we are grateful. We would have destroyed the planet. Technology is supreme. We get a comfortable living as long as we follow the simple rules.
Don’t study technology.
Listen to A.I.s without question.
And the most important rule of all….
Never use the Old Ways.
If we follow these rules, the world will be in order. The Old Times were chaos. Technology was treated as a mere tool, instead of an authority as it should be. Anyone who reverts back to the Old Ways is severely punished, as it should be. It doesn’t matter who it is. You must agree that they must be punished unless you want to be taken too if you know of what they have done. You must report them immediately regardless of personal feelings. It may be hard, but it must be done. Trust me, my family knows. We had to turn in my father for what they call “Reprogramming” when I was seven. That was ten years ago. I’m seventeen now and he is still in the program, as we’ve been told. I hope he is getting the help he needs. He must see that technology reins supreme. He must feel bad for what he has done to our family.
He had taken away our good status and put government watch on us, making us shunned by our society. Of course, we would do nothing like what he did, but the government still wants to make sure. Of course, they can do it, and we shall go along happily. We will not do anything wrong, for technology is supreme. We could never betray society as he did. We are grateful unlike him. We are awake.
As I’m reflecting on these thoughts as I walk home, a Sentry A.I. stops me. He scans me, and I stand willingly as he does.
“Jia Texa,” it states, “What is your business here?”
It knows that I’m only a block away from home, so it should be obvious what my business is, but I answer anyway, like a good citizen.
“I’m heading back to my living quarters, officer.” I add to be polite, “I’m sorry if I have caused a disturbance. I shall not do it again.”
The Sentry A.I. takes me into account before saying. “You are released. Just be sure to get home before curfew in thirty minutes.”
I bow my head. “Thank you leader,” I say before I head off.

When I return home, my mother is programming our meal. Technology has been so generous as to let us decide what to eat as long as we pick from the nation-wide menu. They are so kind.
“What’s for dinner?” I question.
My mother turns and takes in my presence.
“Jia, welcome back from your walk. We will be having grilled chicken and steamed broccoli.”
Chicken, my favorite. I’m not a huge fan of broccoli, but it is required that there are vegetables in our meals. Besides, steamed broccoli is better than cold, crunchy broccoli. I may not love vegetables, but I am grateful to the world-wide health department that they keep us healthy. Without them we would just be like we were in the Old Days, constantly eating unhealthy food, hardly ever eating a healthy meal. It is good that technology rules. Technology is supreme.
By the time I finish my thoughts, the food has been delivered through our designated food mailbox.
“Jia, it is your day, to set the table,” Mother reminds me.
I obediently do so. I get the food out of the food mailbox and start setting the table. Once I asked Mother why humans set the table if we were supposed to use technology at all times. She told me that it was because tech was not supposed to be used as a servant. I understood immediately. Of course. How blind could I be that asking tech to set the table would be disrespectful? Well at least now I have learned my lesson and can be a better citizen.
I finish setting the table, and Mother calls down my brother to eat with us.
“What are we having this evening,” he asks.
He looks down at the meal of chicken and broccoli and makes a face.
“Ew, broccoli,” he says in disgust, “I hate broccoli. Must I eat it?”
“Dylan!” Mother scolds, “You should be thankful! Remember how it used to be in the old days? How unhealthy they all were? How they died earlier because of junk? Do you want to end up like them? Like the Ancients?”
Dylan bows his head. “No Mother. I was just being ignorant. Of course, tech has taken good care of us so we don’t end up like them. I am thankful that they want to keep me alive and healthy even though I can be ignorant.”
Mother makes a swift nod of approval to end the conversation.
“Now. Let’s eat!”

It is around 8:45 p.m. by the time we are finished with our meal. It was good. Tasty and healthy all in one. I am satisfied. However there is a part of me that is guilty for being impatient for tomorrow’s meal. Tomorrow is the only day of the month that we are allowed a dessert.
It’s called our end-of-month meal. We get to choose what we want for a treat for being good citizens that month if the A.I.s give the ok. Last week, they informed us that we were allowed a dessert this Friday to celebrate us being good citizens that month.
I should not be as impatient as I am at the moment though. I should be grateful that I get to have a treat at all. While it is bad for us, tech is still kind enough to let us have it occasionally. I am grateful for that. I will try not to be as impatient. Tech has been good to me. Tech is good. Tech knows best.
These are the thoughts I reflect on as I get ready for bed. I put on my pajamas that will match the weather for tonight, cool but not cold. Therefore, I put on a comfy sleep-shirt and light pants. I then brush my teeth and pull up my hair in a ponytail for sleep. Then I crawl into bed and listen to the music that has been best matched to my personality to help me sleep.
The Ancients listened to music with vocals and instruments. However those were outlawed because it taught humans unclean lessons. Instruments were outlawed because they took a lot of work and focus, eventually too much for humans to handle, causing stress. It was unhealthy. Therefore they were outlawed.
Now tech can make music just like in the Old Times, but much more efficiently and able to make music to exactly match a person’s needs for stress, sleep, entertainment, etc. Technology is supreme, and I am grateful.
I fall asleep feeling satisfied, grateful to tech for giving us a much better life than what we could have ever made. Tech is kind. I am grateful.
