I live in a house on a lake that’s moderately well known from people across the regions. It’s often cited as being one of the most beautiful sights and ideal places to retire. I have to admit that I love it as well. Sometimes I’ll sit outside and just watch with a smile as the suns rays radiate off of the water, giving it a heavenly glaze.
However, there’s another secret about the lake that only we who live by it know about. It’s a secret that we keep to ourselves and never dare to tell anyone else about it. This secret is the story of the lake monster.
Nobody really knows what else to call it. All we know is that it’s something unusual living in the lake with a monster like appearance. At first I scoffed at the idea and thought the people were just telling a tall tale. That was until I saw it for myself.
It was during the middle of the night when I had trouble getting to sleep. It may have been the dinner I had so late at night or it might have been stiffness of my bed. Whatever it was made me feel uncomfortable enough to leave my bed and head outside to calm my body in some way.
The lake always looked rather mysterious at night. The moonlight would only give off a very small reflection that differed from the suns. It made the lake itself appear much more ominous in a way. Of course, this didn’t really bother me as I’d become used to the lake and its surroundings.
Time went on and I began to feel my eyelids growing heavier. They were about to shut completely when something caught my attention. A tiny rise in the water had formed where the moons reflection was. It looked like something was coming out.
Startled and confused, I immediately went inside and closed the door quietly. It was at this point that I realized just how scared I actually was. My heartbeat was pounding at a rapid rate while my hands shivered continuously. That didn’t stop me from looking.
By now the creature’s head had risen and I could see two eyes shining very brightly. In fact, it was so bright that I had to partially shield my eyes with my hand. Along with the eyes was what looked like very scraggly long hair that looked like messy strings that had been plucked on its head.
As the creature continued to rise I noticed that it also had a very thin body. The shoulders that came out first were so bony that I wondered how much actual muscle it actually had.
It appeared to be moving directly towards my house as its emaciated body rose further from the water, revealing the monstrous height of this thing. The trees in my backyard were almost of the same height. At this point I’d begun to panic and scurried further back. Common sense says I should have done a little more, but my curiosity had wiped my mine clean of any logic at that point.
The creature was now standing entire outside the lake with its entire body exposed. Never before had I seen anything like it. It was so tall and intimidating, yet so frail and weak looking. All it really did was cast glances in every direction until its eyes stopped at me. My entire body froze at that moment. I could feel my breath picking up in an unsteady pattern.
My mind raced at all the different possibilities that could happen to me. The creature could take me down into the water with it, or it could suck me into its hypnotic gaze. None of that happened though. Instead, the creature rolled back its head and let out a loud roar that shook the entire town. Every tree shook as the wind carried the monstrous roar that was a little high pitched and thunderous. My eyes pounded as the sound penetrated my ear drums and paralyzed my body with even greater fear.
Roars from the creature went on for another minute or so before it turned around and very slowly crept back into the lake. I was only left to replay the incident over and over in my head. My mind told me that everything hadn’t happened and yet there it was. The creature from the lake had risen.
The next day I very discreetly went over to the town hall where old records and documents were kept. It was here that I read the story of the creature for the first time.
The creature was apparently an entity that has been seen by inhabitants for many centuries. Said to be the embodiment of the lake itself, the creature lives off of moon rays and hates being seen. Making eye contact with one is guaranteed to ensure a year of violent weather and misfortune for those unfortunate enough to look in its eyes.

Since that day we’ve had numerous thunderstorms, my leg was broken in an accident, and a family member died. I can’t help but wonder if this is at all connected to my encounter with the creature of the lake.
