My two brothers and I love hide and seek. And I mean....loooove hide and seek. We played so much that we had to change how we played just to keep it interesting. That's when we came up with Lights Out hide and seek. It's just what you might think. Hide and seek, but with no lights on. And I'm talking NO light at all. Pitch black darkness. Scaring each other was the best part of it.
So one particular night, our parents went out for a date night which meant a perfect time to play. I love hiding and I try being creative with my hiding spots. So creative in fact, that I hadn't even thought of hiding under the bed in a while. I try not to pick places like this because I'll end up in the same spot as my brother, and we all spread out before the seeker counts just to make it easier not to pick the same hiding spot. So anyway, as my brother Simon--the seeker in this round--begins counting down, I chose my parent's bed in the back room of the house to hide under.
I slithered underneath, waiting to hear my brother's footsteps for a couple of minutes. Not having been under a bed in a while, I realize I have much more room to go and pull myself back even further against the wall. Seconds later, I almost scream when I hear the shallow breathing of my brother Jacob.
"Geez! Why didn't you tell me you were under here?" I whispered. He said nothing, but I get why. When the lights are off, every little noise seems ten times louder so he was keeping a low profile. I question him no further, and wait in nail-biting suspense until I hear footsteps coming down the hall.
My adrenaline starts pumping, and I hear Simon getting closer and closer. Soon, he'll have me. He's in the bedroom now, and I push myself towards the middle, waiting for him to lift from one side of the bed so I can scoot out the other side and make a break for it. Instead, I hear the flap of covers lift from the front of the bed and now he's scooting towards me. He's got us dead to rights. I wait for him to grab me and...
"Hey, what are you doing under here?" I hear my brother ask, and it scares me so much I almost throw up in realization. It's not Simon...it's Jacob. Hands shaking, I slowly reach into my back pocket and gently fish out my cell phone.
Afraid of seeing the alternative first, I raise my cell phone in front of me, and as I suspected, the light shines on Jacob's face. Maybe Simon was pulling a fast one on us...
"Ahh! Get that light outta my face! Simon'll be here any sec!"
Hands quivering, I slowly move my cell phone over to my right, and it reveals a man I've never seen before in my life. His hair hung down his face in mop-like tendrils, and he lifts up the corner of his mouth to form the creepiest grin made of nightmares. Just as we start screaming, he cackles a maniacally, and grabs my arm.
"YOU'RE IT! HAHAHAHAH YOU'RE IT! YOU'RE IT!!" He screams into my face.
I now start screaming and struggling to get away. Thankfully my brother was at just the right spot where he can kick the maniac square in the face. Two kicks later, he lets go of me and I'm able to get myself out along with my brother from under the bed. Flicking on every light switch as we go, we're rumbling through the house and see our confused brother Simon standing in the hallway
"What's with the screaming, guys?!"
"GET OUT!!' We both run past and start dragging him with us. Once outside, we blurt out that there's an intruder in the house and we run over to the next door neighbor's, who thankfully knows us well enough to open their door right away.
Less than ten minutes later, police are scouting the inside of our house as we wait in nervous anticipation. No such luck at first, and we feel the disappointment of another crazy person that got away. Then, we see one younger officer jog up to the other officers holding a sleeping bag and pointing toward the back of the house. Next thing we know, we hear a ruckus which is mostly composed of screaming. After a while, three officers are carrying the disheveled and cuffed man around the corner.
Strangely, the man didn't seem to be yelling in anger. He seemed worked up and excited, with a mad grin on his face all the while. We later found out that the sleeping bag was what he slept on while living under our house! They found him hiding in a crawl space on another corner of the house and pulled him out. Apparently he was ranting and raving about having such a good time playing hide and seek with us. Naturally, we were extremely creeped out and our parents sealed off the crawl space where you could only get in one way through a small locked door.
The man had told police that he heard us playing hide and seek all the time, and it sounded so fun he thought he'd join in with us again. Again....that means some other time we played with this psychopath hiding in the dark with us.

From that day on, we never played hide and seek again.
