Ever since I was young, I remember the intricately woven dreamcatchers. Blue, yellow, green, black- all sorts of colors hung in every space there is to hang. It was always like this, I guess. I can't remember a time when I actually saw the walls.
The entire house was filled with these dreamcatchers. It was meant to chase nightmares away and fill us with good dreams. But I really doubted the need to have so many unless we were planning to sell it later.
Mom used to make them. And she didn't sell a single one. She kept making it and hanging it in any place she could find. There were times when she would make one for hours and neglect everything else. She just didn't stop. Even when she got sick, she kept on making them.
At first I thought it was her Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that made her do it, but she always denied to being a patient of it.
She hated doctors. She said they claimed to know everything. So when she was prescribed meds, she refused and said she could prepare her own remedy.
"We stay true to our roots," she used to say whenever she hung a dreamcatcher onto the wall. "We stay true. And we stay close, where our roots can protect us from harm."
There were times when I thought my mom was a bit crazy, not in a fun 'you're crazy, dude' kind of a way, but in a more serious kind of way. She kept murmuring to herself when she embroidered the designs. She sprinkled salt all over the window sill. And most of the time she was terrified.
But then there were times where she baked cookies and bread, and things just seemed normal again. She knew how to work her way through things. She knew exactly what to do and when.
I watched her intently, but I was never able to replicate her. She was an enigma, a burning fire.
