That night Lily didn't sleep a wink. The robbery case concerned her greatly and researched further the blood analysis. Usually demons leave their mark behind on the scene of the crime or at least in the victim's blood that was possessed. This one left nothing behind except the turned cross yet Lily clearly feels the darkness of a demon. Perhaps she is looking at the wrong places or oversaw something obvious? Lily feels it in her bones that this case is no ordinary robbery. Very early in the morning she returned to the scene with a bottle of holy water. At a fallen piece of shard with blood she poured a drop over it. The moment it came into connection it sizzled and vaporized. "I knew it." She whispered to herself.
Suddenly her mobile phone chimed. On the display showed a message from the lab with a short report. Noting that the blood has small traces of brimstone, belonging to a young man called Victor Rohan and his address. She sighed disappointed and headed back to the district, she can't investigate further without an escort of an experienced officer. She will have to wait until he arrives. Along the way she stopped at a petrol station for some breakfast and coffee. In her office Lily did some research about Victor Rohan via Facebook and learned that he is a talented violinist at Albert hall, soon to have his grand performance. Lily stared at the young man's slim face trying to see how the demon got to him. Is he religious, did he fall for a deal or did the demon come from the stolen violin? She gasped as she saw the possibility. The violin! What if the violin held a demon? Mr. Rohan went to see the exhibition and got drawn to the demon's dark power? It all makes sense-
"Buenos dias, Lily. You're in early." Greeted Cortez with a warming smile.
Lily blinked and stretched herself. "Couldn't sleep, the case had my mind going."
"You do know the case is handed over to detective Buchanan." Cortez reminded her.
"I know it's none of my concern but I couldn't shake it off, like an itch that you can't scratch away." She took a sip of her coffee and walked over to him with a folder. "So, I did some digging and came up with this. I was wondering if it is possible to visit Mr. Rohan and see what further leads we get?"
Cortez blinked at Lily surprised for a moment and then smiled. "Ambitious to become a detective?"
"Maybe."
Cortez took the folder into his hands and paged through. "Visiting Mr. Rohan as in for an interview?"
Lily nodded.
Cortez sighed. "Actually, we should hand this folder to Buchanan but you have a hunch and can't leave it be. What exactly is your hunch?" He looked into Lily's hazel-green eyes.
"I-I can't explain exactly. Maybe it's all too obvious and simple?"
"There are simple cases but they are a rarity, perhaps this is one of them."
"Cortez, I know I've only just arrived but what harm would do asking Mr. Rohan few questions?"
Cortez rubbed his eyes with a sigh. "Very well, after that it will be handed over to Buchanan. No exceptions."
"Thank you." Smiled Lily.
Within the hour they stood at Mr. Rohan's front door of a small flat. They rung the bell more than twice but there was no answer nor a sound heard.
"I'm afraid Mr. Rohan is out." Spoke an elderly lady from the end of the hall. She immediately recognized from Lily's and Cortez's uniform that they were the police. "Did Mr. Rohan do something terrible?" She wondered concerned.
"Who are you?" Asked Lily before Cortez could answer the lady's question.
"I'm the landlady of this flat, Lydia Davies."
"We only have a few questions for Mr. Rohan, Ms. Davies." Assured Cortez.
"Well I could give you his mobile number if that would help?"
"We would appreciate that." Accepted Lily with a forced smile.
Ms. Davies quickly shuffled away and returned with a torn piece of paper. "He's very kind and helping young man. The violin he plays, absolutely perfect but mostly at the wrong time."
"What do you mean?" Asked Cortez before Lily could.
"He practices his violin very late at night. Last few days he even played the whole night without a break till four in the morning."
"Woah, a passionate player then." Noted Cortez surprised with raised eyebrows. Lily wasn't surprised but now she has a mobile number to track. Secretly she memorized the number before handing it to detective Buchanan personally. The detective was not alone as Lily entered his office. "Chief inspector Vogel." Greeted Lily formally after recovering her surprise for being able to see his handsome face. "Is it an inconvenient moment?" Wondered Lily politely.
"Not at all, officer Clearwater. What brings you to me?" Smiled the detective. Chief inspector's ice-blue eyes looked at Lily intense, that gaze made her nervous.
"To be frank, I did some investigation of the latest robbery. That of the missing violin. I know the case wasn't handed to me but my curiosity got the better in me. Before I do more than I have already done, I'm handing over the folder to you." She handed the folder to detective Buchanan. "In there you will find all the information I have gathered so far from last night and this morning. My apologies for over stepping my limits."
Buchanan paged the folder through with raised eyebrows and at times nodding in acceptance while Vogel looked into it with a stern expression. Lily has seen that stern expression before at a friend. It doesn't always mean as it appears but what can be assured, he looks at it with fullest attention and concentration.
"Officer Lily, if this case was signed to you it would be your first?" Wondered Buchanan.
She nodded.
"Well, I must say you've done a fine job gathering this valuable information and thank you for being truthful." He grinned at her pleased.
"Officer Clearwater, you set your ambitions well, if you continue so you will become soon a detective. Continue with the investigation and if you need help detective Buchanan will assist you." Vogel grinned and moved the folder over to her.
"Pardon me chief inspector, if I understood correctly officer Clearwater received your permission to continue her investigation?" Remarked Buchanan carefully.
"Precisely." Vogel patted him on the shoulder and walked out.
Buchanan stared for a moment at the folder. "I'd say." He muttered to himself and then looked to her. "As he said, get on with it but keep me informed."
Lily gave a nod, took the folder and left with a satisfied grin. At her desk she continued with tracking down Mr. Rohan's mobile at the computer. He hides in the sewers? Lily scoffed to the fact that many demons like doing the old-fashioned way, hiding in dark places. Luckily this one hasn't figured how mobile phones work. Quickly she transferred the location onto her mobile phone and to Buchanan. While packing to investigate, officer Cortez noticed and looked at her with a questioned and surprised gaze. "Where are you going, Lily?"
"Underground, Mr. Rohan hides down there."
"Espera! (Wait) Didn't you hand over the file?"
"As I was handing it over to detective Buchanan, chief inspector Vogel was there and gave me the permission to continue."
"Alright." Gave Cortez non-judging while watching Lily packing and preparing.
"Where are all the waterproof gears again?" Asked Lily.
Cortez scoffed with a smirk. "Allow me to accompany you."
The foul smell in the sewers is not an easy place to investigate as Cortez and Lily have come to learn. They both regret not to have taken with them a gas mask. Lily tried to distract the smell by focusing in looking ahead in the dark and be prepared to meet Mr. Rohan or better said the demon. For once she saw her new abilities as a benefactor instead of a dark curse. Such as being able to see a bit more in the dark than before, sensitive senses, reactions and movement quicker than before and grew physically a bit stronger. Lily first came to realize all this during her years in the police academy.
Suddenly her tracking device sounded off, confirming the mobile should be by now in sight, lying only few feet away in front of her. She blinked and looked carefully. Lily searched with the torch slowly through. Mr. Rohan was nowhere in sight. Is it a trap?
"Are we overseeing something or is the tracking device defected?" Wondered Cortez as he searched.
Lily stepped closer to Cortez out of caution of an attack and dialled on her mobile Mr. Rohan's number to give a ring. Within seconds they both heard a deep buzzing sound coming from both directions of the tunnel. Immediately Cortez and Lily faced their backs to each other and pointed a loaded pistol with torch down the never-ending sewer tunnels.
The buzzing continued to a regular rhythm. Lily listened closer and slowly looked up. A mobile phone was stuck with tape against the ceiling and its screen glowed with Lily's number. Correction, this demon does know how to handle mobile phones one way or another.705Please respect copyright.PENANAoDGMrunPSu
"It seems you hitting a dead end here, officer Clearwater." Noted Detective Buchanan as he saw Lily and Cortez so soon back at their desks.
"I don't give up that easy if that's what you're wondering, detective Buchanan. I still have few options left to investigate and collect further facts." She picked up the phone at her desk and dialed down the number to Albert Hall office. As Lily has suspected Mr. Rohan hasn't appeared to his rehearsals and his friends know nothing nor get a response. His mobile phone contains only his finger prints and the information within the mobile points only to his friends and the exhibition. Then he placed the mobile in the sewers because he knew he will be followed. He definitely has won time with that distraction but Lily's instinct told her that this demon won't hide by running in the distance, rather the opposite. She will search through Mr. Rohan's flat on the night before receiving the warrant. Cortez gave Lily the connections to call for a warrant. She quickly listed down the facts why needing one. With hesitation and long waiting at the phone she received the confirmation for a search warrant, it will be made and sent within one or two days. Lily sighed exhausted. Cortez suggested her to go home and catch up her sleep. At home in her flat Lily caught up few hours of sleep before heading over to Mr. Rohan's flat as a civilian with a black hoodie. She immediately headed up to the roof and found the fire escape. Silently as she could she climbed her way down to Mr. Rohan's floor and noticed his window is wide open. Is he here or has he left? Cautiously Lily climbed in and inspected carefully. No one in sight. She began to look around the room, the bookshelves and desk but found nothing pointing to demon worship. Then it is confirmed the demon came from the violin. Mr. Rohan's former violin lay neatly in its open case at the desk, surrounded by pages of music notes written by hand. He was trying to compose a melody.
Suddenly she heard silent steps coming from a different room. Quickly she sprinted to hide behind the door that covered a dark corner and drew out her gun. The intruder's steps were silent but the parquet floor squeaked under its weight. The intruder wore red and blue sneakers with blue jeans, a dark printed t-shirt and his hair was stylish. His silhouette appeared familiar to Lily. Once he sneaked into the middle of the room she stepped out and pointed her fingers at his spine, mimicking a pistol. "Who are you and what are you doing here?" She hissed. He winced and raised slowly his hands. "My name's Jeffray, Jeffray McKinley. I'm here for the same reason as you are."
Lily blinked. "And what reason would that be, Mr. McKinley?" She hissed with suspicion.
Jeffray looked over his shoulder. "Hey, you're the police officer from the scene. I think you see it too, this is no ordinary robbery, there is more to it. I was hoping searching through his things might lead me to a further clue as to how it all started and where Victor Rohan could be at this moment."
"If I'm seeing it too, then what do you suspect this case is?"
"The supernatural, I fear this case points to a demonic possession." Answered Jeffray calmly.
Lily stared at him wide-eyed and stepped in front of him. "Then, then you know all about it and magic?"
"Basically, in magic but am no expert of dark magic. Then you know of its secrecy?" Jeffray grinned.
"Yes." She blinked and took few steps back. "That explains why you took the pictures of that unique angle." She sighed while trying to process all this.
"What's your name?" Asked Jeffray with a warming smile. Glad to have met her a second time to know all this. To know that he is not alone amongst humans and a pretty one too.
"I'm Lily Clearwater." She gave calmly, feeling that she can trust him. Your intuition is always spot on. That's what her friend told her with a broad smile. "Mr. Rohan is possessed by a demon. The demon came from that one violin that is stolen."
"You're sure?" Wondered Jeffray shocked.
She nodded.
"Then we must get help from-"
Suddenly there was soft thud of a window opening at another room. Rapidly Lily grabbed Jeffray by the arm and pushed him to the dark corner where she hid. Lily sprinted over to the long dark curtain hanging at the window and held her pistol ready. Slow and soft footsteps sounded off the ground, approaching closer and closer to the room where they reside.
Suddenly the steps halted and heard a deep breathing followed by deep sinister chuckle. "I can smell you two and you won't get far." The demon walked on. "Come out, come out where ever you are." He teased with his inhuman voice. The voice sounded very close to Lily. She felt a pair of eyes looking through the curtain at her. She won't let fear take her, she is ready to drop the gun and charge straight at the demon head on as an element of surprise.
"Over here demon!" Jumped in Jeffray with a bottle of water at hand. Immediately he sprinkled some on the demon. The demon within Victor Rohan grimaced in pain as the holy water burned its flesh and his black filled eyes remained on Jeffray. Immediately Jeffray began to read from a small leather-bound book, reciting in Latin an exorcism. Lily saw that this demon is too strong against this sort of exorcism. Something in her mind told her that she needs to do something quite similar to end this sort of curse. Mirroring its goal or purpose and then it should be over.
The demon staggered with a deep laughter closer to Jeffray. "That won't do any good." Before he attempted to attack Jeffray, Lily sprung in and pulled Jeffray out of the room. "You're nimble." Sniggered the demon at Lily.
Quick-witted she took Jeffray's bottle of holy water and threw it at the demon so hard that it smashed to pieces. The demon cried out in agony as holy water soaked into the clothes and sizzled upon its flesh. Jeffray stared at the demon shocked in awe and petrified. He wanted to look away but he couldn't. The gentle touch at the hand from Lily had him liberated of the terrible trance. She led him out the window, through the fire escape and onto the streets. After a while running Jeffray lets go of Lily's hand to catch up his breath. Lily stopped and turned around to see.
"What was that? Usually the exorcism rite works on every demon."
"That was a different demon, secondly that Latin quotation for exorcism isn't a secure method how to get rid a demon."
"I've noticed that." Jeffray coughed. "We must see Father Mathew, he will know what to do."
"Wait! We? Since when? I saved you, remember? Why seeing Father Mathew, do you need a confession and a new bottle of holy water?" Lily scoffed, crossed her arm and shook her head. "This demon knows that you and I are onto him. It came from the violin of the exhibition, hence it needs to be rid in a different way than those who come directly from hell. They have a different flow of energy than the rest and the fallen are the mightiest to confront."
"The fallen?" Wondered Jeffray.
"The fallen angels, those banned for hell or followed Lucifer."
"Right."
"Then your necklace with the cross is just for show or to impress the family?" Asked Lily.
"No!" Snapped Jeffray angered. "For protection and a reminder when I would lose faith." He held onto the cross. "Wait, how do you know all this? I mean the demon stuff and their flow of energy?"
"I-I learned it from someone very close to me." She whispered and faced the ground.
"Oh, I'm sorry."
Lily shook her head. "It's alright. What's in the past is the past."
"Then what do you suggest we do next?" Jeffray realized he slipped the word 'we' what makes Lily uncomfortable.
"All I know is that this demon needs a mirroring action to submit its weakness. Something with the violin would be my guess."
"Would be your guess? Are you sure?"
"I don't know." Sighed Lily.
"How about we- you and I hear Father Mathew's suggestion and what he has to say to yours?" Jeffray corrected himself.
"Very well." Sighed Lily annoyed, hoping not to enter a church. She never liked them since she can remember.
