Katrina Kuznetsov’s POV
Seeing Conall relentless was a new game for me. I really liked it when he can’t stop himself to get to know me and be at my side as I tried to make my way into Jack Reid’s estate. I needed to find another way to investigate my father’s men and how they get here, in the past from the present time. As Conall said, he was the only one that knew about the secret of time travel, then how? A mole, perhaps?
“What are you thinking so deeply about, milady?” Jack’s voice came into my eardrums. I smoothed my dress as I held my champagne in one hand.
“My lord,” I said as I bowed at him.
“Please, call me jack,” he said as he took a sip from his glass.
“then you must call me Katrina then,” I said as I looked at him.
“fair enough. So, a penny for your thought?” He said as he looked at me. I smiled politely even though I don’t want him to be near me at the moment. I can feel that Conall’s penetrating stare on my back ever since the party was starting.
“no, I rather that you don’t want to know about my thought, my lord, I mean, jack,” I said as I was looking at him before taking a sip from my glass.
“of course since your friend was looking at us like he wants to eat us,” he said as he looked in Conall’s direction. He raised the glass at him before Conall replied the same.
“he just afraid that you might do something that would harm me,” I said as I was trying to look okay.
“and do you think I will do that to you, Katrina?” He asked as his green eyes were reminded me of Conall. Damn these Scottish men and their charm.
“heh, I don’t know. perhaps. I can never be too safe in a man that I barely knew,” I said as I tried to play hard to get.
“so we need to get to know better. Come join me for the moonlight walk tonight,” he whispered into my ears. I smiled as I tried to control my anger.
“Perhaps, another time. I don’t want you betrothed to be mad at me,” I said as I tried to play the fiancé card.
“oh, you don’t have to worry about that, I have no such person in my life. Besides, I was looking for one right now, actually,” he said as he took my glass and put them both on the tray of the server.
“Shall we dance?” He said as he offered his hand. I hesitated at first but then I gave in as many women were looking at me, more like staring murderously at me as I left their lord hanging.
“just one song,” I said as I took his hand. Jack dragged me onto the dance floor and turned me around to look at him. He put his hand on the lower of my back and another hand on my right hand.
“I never saw you around before, although you do kind of resemble someone that I used to know,” he started to break the ice as we were waltzing on the dance floor.
“my, do I have a doppelgänger? I’m sure love to meet her,” I said as I turned around and spun into Jack’s arms.
“marry me, Katrina and I will make you the happiest person in your life,” Jack said as he looked deeply into my eyes.
“What?” I asked as I’m not sure that I heard it right.
“be my wife and I will make you the best of the best on Scotland,” Jack said as I was being dipped by him.
“But why me?” I asked him again as I was trying to stall him. I hope that Conall would save me from this messed up proposal.
“the first time I saw you, I knew that you’re the one for me. I can’t help it but my feelings for you can never be changed,” he said as he pulled me back up. I was blinking a few times as I knew that I have to disappoint him.
“We can’t be together,” I said honestly as I looked at Jack.
“Why? Because of that friend of yours?” He asked as he tried to get my answer out of me.
“mind if I cut in?” A voice said as we turned around to see that Conall was waiting for me to take his hand.
“yes, I do. I was in the middle of something important here to be discussed,” Jack said as he looked at Conall. Conall calmly talked to him as he pointed something. Jack’s face turned white as he looked in that direction.
“Excuse me, Katrina, I have to go somewhere,” he said before he kissed my knuckles.
“Of course, my lord,” I said as I bowed at him.
“now that he’s gone, shall we dance?” Conall said as he took my hand and led me onto the dance floor.
Conall’s Reid POV
As Katrina and Jack were on the dance floor, I did some researches about the house of Reid. Since it was the 1950s, I can’t help it that Google was not invented yet and of course, Wikipedia. I went to the library of the estate as I went to look for some old family history.
“house of Reid, house of Reid. Ah! Here we are. House of Reid: The Beginning,” I said as I took out an encyclopedia.
“let’s reveal your secret, shall we?” I said as I read through it. After 30 minutes of some speed reading, I have come to stop as I don’t want to continue to know about my own family history.
“damn, that was intense,” I said as I put back on the shelf.
“now, to find that bomb,” I said as I went to the family portrait and some old family album. I flipped throughout the books and found something unusual about a photo. There was Jack, a person that resembled someone familiar and then a girl. They were happy together as jack looked at the girl with love, the fact that I knew so much.
“bingo,” I said as I went to close the album and went to get Katrina from him.
“Mind if I cut in?” I said as I looked at Katrina and Jack. Katrina was smiling at me as Jack was furious to look at me.
“yes, I do. I was in the middle of something important here to be discussed,” Jack said but I patted him on the shoulder and whispered something at him.
“Your sister-in-law, I heard she was in town. Do you want to miss that?” I whispered as his face turned white.
“Excuse me, Katrina, I have to go somewhere,” he said before he kissed Katrina’s knuckles. He went to leave Katrina alone on the dance floor as I took my place in front of her.
“now that he’s gone, shall we dance?” I said as I took Katrina’s hand and put my hand on her lower back.
“What did you just said that made him running away like that?” Katrina asked me as she eyed me suspiciously.
“oh, you know, just the usual stuff,” I said as I turned her around and waltzing around.
“come on, Reid. Out with it. What did you find?” She said as she held my hand so tight that I knew if I don’t give her what she wanted, she will crush it.
“a little gift that I get from gossiping around when you were dancing here with your prince charming,” I said as I looked at her smugly.
“what is it about?” She asked again. I rolled my eyes at her before she crushed my hand.
“Ow, okay, okay. Her brother’s widow is in town and from the looks of it, he still has a feeling for her,” I said as I twirled Katrina around as I spun her into my arms.
“that’s his weakness. No wonder he did not betroth yet. Still on one-sided love?” She made a comment as she looked into my eyes. I was so captivated by her golden eyes. I cleared my throat as I took my hands from her as the song ended.
“We better get going to find that emerald if we ever want to get back into the present time,” I said as I looked at her before I spotted something from far away.
“Yeah, we need that emerald. But don’t you think it would be hard to find it here? It might be in Russia for Pete’s sake,” Katrina said as I was looking at that person who was standing a few meters away from us.
“Reid, did you heard what I just said?” Katrina asked me.
“I think it would not be so hard to find the thing that we need,” I said as I was still looking at that person.
“what are you even talking about? Conall! Conall, look at me!” She said before I turned her around and she stopped in her talking.
“is that what I think it is?” She asked.
“Yup, I think so,” I said as we were looking at a person that just came into the feast.
“Announcing, the Great Duchess of Wales, Princess Danielle,” the announcer said as the princess was looking so happy as she waved around. The crowd just went to her as they wanted to talk to her. The emerald at her crown was glistening in the lights.
“Now, how do we get that emerald if it belongs to a princess?” Katrina asked as we looked at each other.
