I had everything. A home, two parents who loved me, my soon to be born little sister. A school I was wanted in, I was captain of the dance team, an honor roll student with first in my class, and I was dating Jake; who was the perfect boyfriend.
Life was great. Life was...perfect. But not every story gets a happy ending or at least no mine.
I was 16 when it was the day I got called into the principals' office. I walked in if only I'd have known. Walking in Mr. Turner was sitting behind his desk and two police officers to his right. I close the door behind me. One of the officers, and the older looking man probably in his 60s, told me to take a seat. So I did. If only I'd have known the words that were about to come out his mouth was my end.
I remember the words so clearly, so precise, word per word that came out of Mr. Turner's mouth," Miss Nina, I'm sorry to inform you this but there was a fire located at your house. Both your parents were inside when this occurred..."
I remember my pulse rising. I could hear my heart beating out of my chest. The air suddenly became thick.
Before I could respond my feet had already made a decision. I was running while tears were rushing down my face. When my legs stopped running I realized where I was, home. Only it wasn't home anymore. There were only bits and pieces of it left together while the rest was in ashes. I looked around to see where my parents were but all I'd seen as police officers and firefighters who were hosing down the rest of the smoke. I keep looking around without moving. Then my eye catches two body bags laying on the grass.
"NO!!" I screamed. I headed towards the body bags but arms wrapped around my body keeping me to it. "Let me go" I kicked, screamed, and pushed but they held to me tight. Eventually, I stopped, stopped fighting but it was my whole body that stopped. I'd begun to feel weak I could no longer stand. The officers let go of me and I was on my knees. Sobbing. They were gone and it felt like I was too.
