After we were all done, we all ate an insignificant amount of dry, old gravy despite knowing today was going to be a hard day since potato season had just come and the owners were overwhelmed. Soon after, we all headed to the field along with about 50 other slaves. There, it felt like we were in a furnace! Throughout the day, my job was to hold the ladder for my family when they were picking the potatoes from the trees, so they wouldn’t injure themselves. I had to rush to anyone who screamed my name, and even though I was the one who wanted to pick the potatoes, my dad kept telling me I was too young. Though I didn't get how that was logical, I didn’t argue because he was never in a good mood these days.

All of us took deep breaths knowing it was going to be a long sprint, then we started to run. We must have run a few hundred meters when we were beginning to see the coast, which was about 2 miles away, I estimated. After a few more minutes, we all stopped to breathe again, mom especially looked like she was derived from oxygen.

It was a small boat, at the front of it was a room for the helmsman, in the middle was a space for the slaves to put their sleeping bags on and at the back part, was a deck for people to stand on. The floors were wooden and the color of the ship white. We realized we only brought two sleeping bags so my brother was sharing with my father and my mom and I was sharing, luckily though we had brought food for multiple days. People were settling in so we decided to also do it and find a good spot in the middle instead of the edge. All the people were saying bye to their loved ones over the loud noise of the ocean and soon the boat took off.
