Embers and Lightning

I'd like to think of the embers burning

in the pit of my stomach

as your own personal pool

of molten love.

There to dip your fingers

in desire and embrace my heart

as lightly as a dove.

But, if that's true,

what then, is the lightning

that courses down my arms

when you only lay a hand on my shoulder?

Or what exactly is the electricity

that shoots through my veins

with a kiss to my neck?

Are they connected in some way?

That deep burning pit or fire

That shock that doesn't quite reach past the skin

Lightning makes embers,

but embers don't make lightning.

They both make fire.

Some may burn quick and hot,

others lasting for decades.

They both leave ash.

Dark grey, sometimes black.

Sometimes hot enough

to start a new fire

or cold enough
