The news for that day reported an incident about an earthquake lasting for 15 seconds and registering an 8.5 on the Richter scale at 8:12 AM. One of the subway tunnels caved in and buried Train 9 for fourteen hours before rescue crews were able to free the surviving passengers. Of the 103 people on the train, 19 had minor injuries, 53 had mild or worse injuries, and 27 died, one of whom was Travis Michaels, a man heading to Fremont to visit his aunt.
Also reported were stories of people being tossed onto the train tracks as the earthquake struck. Most returned to safety on the platform once the tremors had calmed, but there were several injuries on Platform 2 as some passengers were thrown against the train as it pulled into the station. There were many broken wrists, fingers, and missing body parts, including one man's nose. One man died when he was thrown onto the tracks before the train that had yet to stop.
In spite of all of the news coverage the quake received for that day, no media outlet reported how every physical detail of Lance Patterson and Travis Michaels was identical from the shapes of their bodies and faces down to the placement of the hairs on their arms.
