The dark midnight street of Sanguine is filled with red and blue cop and ambulance lights. 10 year old; Ember sits on the porch her 2-story house as she stares in shock into the darkness in between the two houses across the street.
Just hours ago, her father had ordered her, her sister, and her twin brother pizza. Upon their father answering the door, Ember follows behind her father but is stopped abruptly when she sees the masked figure pull out a gun and shoot her father 3 times in the chest in cold blood.
The unknown gunman stares into Ember's eyes, almost sympathetic then fled the house and Ember's siblings comes racing down the stairs to find their sister unharmed. With the police at the house within a few minutes, they secure the crime scene, wheel their father out in a black body bag, and talk to Zephyr and Prise to see if they knew what had happened. However, neither knew what happened and both informed that only Ember knew. A female cop sits next to Ember and hands her a tissue. Ember snaps out of the trance that she is in, enough to take the tissue from the female cop.
At 10 years old, Ember knew how these cops were when it comes to certain types of crimes. Domestic Violence; by a man; he gets 10 years. A female, she gets a slap on the wrist with 2 months; they look the other way.
Disturbing the peace; they look the other way. Murder; depending on who did it; a female murdering a man; she gets a slap on the wrist with 2 months to 2 years jail time.
A man murdering a female; he gets lynched meaning prison for life or 15 years no parole. But, let it be a black on black; female on female; male on male. They don't know how to act. They either look into it for a few months or it goes straight into the Cold Case filing cabinet.
The female cop sounded genuine when she was telling Ember about the murder suicide of her mother and father. Her mother shot her father because she found out that her husband was cheating on her with another man. Ember knows she is just trying to make her feel better.
Ember asks, "Did you cry?"
The female cop nods then goes on to ask Ember some questions, "Did you see the person who did it? What was the person wearing? Does your dad have any enemies?"
Ember answered the questions the female cop asked, "He had on a mask. All black. And not that I know of." Her father was a hard working man, stayed in his lane, and made friends easily. The only other person Ember could truly think of who would want to hurt her father is her mother. But Ember hasn't seen her mother since she was 5 years old.
