As Emily witnessed the saddening fate of the school's principal, Ms. Finley. The thought of the book now had the chance to fully invade Emily's mind, and unfortunately and fortunately, it succeeded. Plot armor, I suppose? The author of this book probably ran out of ideas to make it more understanding... Weird...
Anyway, let's continue on with the book of heroes. The next chapter will hopefully entertain you readers out there. This fictional world will be mysterious, and yes, I will keep repeating that phrase over and over because it's true.
Now, onwards to...
Chapter Two: Years
The next few days have been very tough for Emily. The death of Ms. Finley has kept her distracted from classes, and everything else. She ignored her hunger, ignored her teachers—Although she's used to that—And ignored her friends and family. She would only eat when she felt like it, she would run downstairs, open up the fridge, and grab a single cracker which she slowly eats... Take her ten minutes to finish a small one.
And this worries her family and friends. Emily's mother had tried to have a small talk with Emily, and it only took her two failed attempts to finally let Emily speak and release the drama she had been going through. It took her a while to let go of these emotions, but she managed with a little help from a school party Alex and Noel hosted for her. That day, she felt like she was aware of her mental health for the first time in months. And with her knowing that her mind was ruining her life, she had finally got over Ms. Finley.
But there was one part in her she still couldn't get over with, history... As she opened the old book, it felt as if nothing had happened. She flipped through the pages, and each page was only for one hero. Each page contains a drawing of a man or woman in different sizes, forms, and clothing. She would only look at the drawings, skipping the texts and information, before flipping the page to another one. The thick book has about three hundred pages, but they wrote only sixty-seven pages. They left the rest of the blank.
After seeing the entire book, she groaned to herself, feeling like a complete loser, as she placed it back under the bed and not paying attention to it for the rest of the year... One year has passed, Emily is now fifteen. She still studied in the same school with the same staff and the same two friends. It was as if nothing had changed about her since that unfortunate event. After getting over those past events, she continued to act like Emily. That being edgy, lazy, and fearsome to some students. She continued to listen to most of the classes instead of sleeping through them the whole day.
She continued to have higher marks in her tests. Another year passes by and Emily was still the same, though her looks changed a tad bit. She and her parents were moving to another state because of some financial issues. Her father had to find another job, and he found a good one that can support the family just enough to be under a roof for another day. Alex and Noel had to say their goodbyes to Emily, which saddened her. It took her a long time to find friends such as these two.
And Noel heard that Anton, that nerd guy who always gets irritated by Emily's yawns, wanted to throw a party in his house as a celebration of Emily leaving the country. It sounds as if they meant the party to have good intentions, but deep inside, it does not, knowing who threw that party. It turned into a get together for those who hated Emily for a long time. Even Mr. Frisk joined in the party. Meanwhile, Noel and Alex decided to crash it for the sake of their best friend. So they went undercover, where they slowly messed up the house unnoticed... And by that, I mean stealing the snacks and the toilet papers before running away-
Emily was already on board the plane, and thankfully, Alex caught the entire operation on camera, sending the video to Emily to keep her entertained the rest of the trip to the country of "Sholemin". The country was the oldest and the cheapest to live in since the structures are always old and ancient-like. I said it to be one of the five great kingdoms that were built by Tsiménto the Great Builder. And as someone who thinks the world's past is nothing but a myth, the country of Sholémin was nothing but a replica of the legend of the Five Great Kingdoms.
Emily peeked out the window and saw the vast island from below. Sholemin is a huge circular country, it's filled with tons of cities, towns, fields, and many more. The cities would look more like a medieval kingdom, since the buildings have their vintage-like looks, and they fill the towns with huts and such. Out of all the twenty current countries in this world, Sholemin is the only one who looked like it was actually from the past, and that makes it unique, and popular for tourist spots. It's an ideal place to live or see for people wanting to learn more about the history of this world... Or, well, the believed history to be exact.
And just like everyone, this did not at all excite Emily at all. Emily had been living in a city named "Lastrodan". The buildings are all medieval-themed, made of bricks, and such. Her parents lived in an apartment, on the outside it looked rusty and old, but the inside was not that bad, the beds made of hay, and that was comfy enough for Emily to lie down in, what's worse is that it's on the floor. The apartment room looked small. The living room was square, but it had enough space for the rest of their stuff. The kitchen is in a small corner of the living room, it only contained a little kitchen counter, a sink, and some drawers.
At the end of the living room were two separate wooden doors leading to two separate rooms. The left one was for Emily, and the right one was for her parents. Luckily, there was already a D.I.Y bed ready for them when their moving van hasn't arrived yet, and that being the hay bed I was talking about earlier. The first night was rough for Emily, but as time went on and each day had passed, she was starting to get used to the environment of this place. The internet connection was unfortunately low at a place like this, so she was having trouble with calling her friends.
Speaking of friends, she didn't have one during her stay at her school... Like... At all- Lastrodan High School was a place that she hated, the teachers along with their lessons and plain boring, and didn't bother to make them at all interesting. But Emily didn't care much, the more boring the faster and heavier she can fall asleep...
"You disgust me" Her English teacher scolded.
"Stand in the corner!" Her science teacher scowled.
"No grades? What a surprise!" Her math teacher mocked.
Throughout the years, quote on quote, studying in the Laststrodan High School, Emily stayed as the quite girl and didn't change one bit... It was the middle of December, Emily at age seventeen, was soon to graduate from high school. She needed to present something valuable to her in her graduation speech. "Hm? Something to show off?" Her mother thought as she cleaned the kitchen counter. "You should check out our storage boxes in the basement!"
The apartment Emily and her parents stayed at having a little storage room in the basement, since the owners knew of how small the rooms can be, they turned the basement into a little storage space for the people to store their stuff in. Emily grabbed the silver key before heading down the old basement. There were a lot of boxes, labeled with the room number of who possesses the items stored in them. The only bad part is that the boxes are defenseless, so anyone could just steal them. But since this is a friendly community, as they said, there are no reports on robbery the entire time they have lived there.
She placed the key in the keyhole and turned the knob. The door swung open and Emily searched through the boxes, finding the ones labeled with her room number. It was hard to navigate around the many boxes, she had to push a lot of boxes, and stacks of boxes, aside. Until she finally saw one peeking out of a pile of boxes. "Ah- There's one..." She made her way over to the box and carefully slid it out of the pile, nervous about it suddenly collapsing unto her.
She placed the box on the wooden floor, taking a deep breath before opening the lid... And what she saw first shocked her, it was the old book Ms. Finley gave her... And that was the only thing in the box, out of all the boxes she could've found, it was the one that only contained a memory which she had tried to ignore. Was this a sign? Well, anyway. Emily grunted at the sight of the old memories returning into her mind, but she didn't kick and push the box away out of anger, instead, she just stared at it, her eyes mixed with sadness and anger. "You don't want to be forgotten, don't you?" Emily sighed as she held the thick dusty book.
She dusted off the cover before flipping it open for the first time in two years. As she stared intensely at the words "History Journal by Galoria Zhandra Finley" on the very first page, she knew this was the one thing that meant to her. Even if she's having a hard time accepting that...
A few weeks have gone by, Emily had accomplished the graduation ceremony and was off to college. She had been trying to find a nice place to learn in, a college where she can find her true future. And there was one place she had a thought in mind... It was late January, Emily stood inside the crowd of the Sholemin Airport. She was carrying a few bags, which seemed like enough for her. The bags contained a few snacks, some supplies she might need the first day returning to her home country, and the book.
Though she didn't know how it happened, after the graduation ceremony, she had been busy reading the book. She felt like she needed to... And within three weeks, she had learned a one or two about all the sixty-six heroes and heroines recorded in the book. And there was a lot of remembering able ones like Diavoláki the Thief... Though it was not a surprise that he was especially the one whom Emily knew most.
"We'll miss you so much! Did you pack your toothbrush? Medicine? Spare toothbrush? Spare spare toothbrush? SPARE MEDICINE!?" Her mother panicked as she dug around Emily's bags making sure everything inside there was safe and... Well... There. "I'll be fine, you two" Emily shrugged, looking at her father, who looked proudly at her, and her mother still digging through her small bags. "It's not every day a daughter of mine would go to college" Her father laughed.
"Yeah yeah, our kid's grown up, we get it" Her mother sighed in relief after finishing searching the bags for the sixth or seventh time. "Here you go sweetie, are you sure this is all you need?" She asked, handing the bags to her daughter. Emily nodded with a smile. "Yep! I might live with Alex the first few days" One thing Emily was excited about was to finally see her two old friends again. Fortunately, Alexandra will go to the same college as Emily. The building is just near Alex's house, so it pretty much works. Unfortunately, Noel decided to learn at a university.
Emily waved goodbye before walking inside the plane, bumping into a few passengers... Most of which were just her habit of pushing random people even if they weren't in her way... Until she has reached her seat. The trip back home was very peaceful. She just wore her sleeping mask as she felt the moving plane softly cruising through the air. It took only eight hours until the plane has landed back on the ground...
Emily sighed in relief as she felt the air of her home country once again. After getting her luggage, she checked in at a hotel. Alexandra was getting busy today, so she wasn't able to pick her up. It was just so relieving that the internet connection here isn't a mess, just like in Sholemin... It took her half a day to find a place where she can talk to her old friends about returning home.
She jumped unto the bed... And lay down there for thirty minutes, looking up at the ceiling full of boredom. She spent the entire week thinking about going back to this country, that she forgot what she would do once she arrived. Sure, she was expecting to go home to Alex's house, where she was expecting Alex to just recommend her random stuff that they would do... She sighed, facing her luggage. And a thought occurred in her mind. She stood up and went over to the purple bag, unzipping it and taking out the book.
"Hm..." She wondered, placing the book on the table beside the bed. "The book isn't finished... I remembered there are one-hundred and three heroes that the world knows... Wait- How do I know that? Oh right, I have a splendid memory when I listen- Stop talking to yourself, Emily!" She slapped herself in the face as she flipped through the pages, scanning the heroes. "Ms. Finley didn't have the chance to finish the book... Huh... That's something to think about..."
