a cold heaviness outside us,

a creeping lightness in our bones.

The feathery feel of the dirt beneath our toes,

concealing just how far we've gone.

how all the jokes were hollow,

that we were just passing through.

We left our families in a yellow haze,

dismissed their questions,

left them filled with dread.

How our dizziness must have shown,

our heads full of hope,

and our footsteps determined but scared.

We thought nothing would stand in our way.
