The weekend was unbearably boring and seemed to drag on forever. Finally it was Monday and soon I would yearn for the serenity that the weekend had provided.

My Mom dropped me off at the same spot as always right outside the cafeteria, and I waited for Destiny.

“Hey, Nessa. Those brownies were soooo good.”

“They were a little overdone when I tasted them, but thanks,” I have always been very critical of myself especially when it comes to baking. I always feel like people over exaggerate my cooking abilities just because they are amazed that I can partake in the activity.

“Goodness girl, stop being so hard on yourself,” she giggled. I’m pretty sure that was the last time she laughed for the rest of the day.

As Destiny and I walked to home room, I had a bad feeling about the day. I tried to shake it and convince myself I was just paranoid about the whole Megan situation. I knew Destiny was still blaming herself for Sydney’s suspension.

It somehow had totally slipped my mind that Emily was in our homeroom class. Destiny tapped on my desk twice with her pencil, which was her way of getting my attention without anyone noticing. She waited the procedural three seconds then whispered that Emily was talking with a good-sized group and her eyes kept darting towards them. I could’ve sworn I heard them say Destiny’s name once. Then I heard Sydney’s name, “Sydney Parks *whisper whisper*”. Twice.

I knew Destiny was getting increasingly annoyed, and I was getting annoyed by relation. Did they really have nothing better to do than talk about drama that was three days old? Why couldn’t they just text about it over the weekend like every other modern teenager? Unfortunately, we found out soon enough.

The bell was just about to ring when Destiny tapped three times, which indicated a major development. She frantically told me that Luke Downs had walked in. She was hoping that he wouldn’t show up that day, but he did and he immediately was called over to Emily’s group. I tried to calm Destiny down by telling her that Luke surely already knew about it, and they probably weren’t talking about it.

“Destiny Shilling?” Luke’s voice cut through the air, and I could just imagine Destiny wanting to shrink into nothingness.

Before anyone could react, the bell rang and the announcements came on.

I couldn’t believe it. Megan Makowski’s voice blaring over the intercom. She has never done the announcements before. Ever. This was getting too weird.

“Destiny, what is going on?” I managed.

“Today, we will be having a mandatory assembly in the gym. This past Friday evening, I was involved in an altercation on campus, and I was asked to speak. It is important for us as a student body to always be respectful of one another and extend kindness. I will share my experience further this afternoon. Thank you and have a blessed day.”

“Are you serious?” Destiny was beyond confused. “Is she talking about the “fight” between her and Sydney? Her group was in the wrong too. What is going on?!” She was trying to whisper, but her voice rose as she spoke.

“I don’t have the slightest idea,” I replied.

Destiny tapped on the desk more times than I could count. Luke Downs was walking towards us.
