The Winter estate.
"What about the case about that girl who claimed her father was murdered? Did you check it out?"
"Yeah, I went over to her place and looked around. Are you talking about the case where the father was strangled?"
Raven nodded while opening up a file she picked from the stack beside her. A stack of 130 files to be exact, out of which we had reviewed about 50 and accepted 10.
Being a private detective was not that easy after all...
This is the highest number of cases we got since we started our careers. I guess we do owe thanks to Noah...
"So? Did you find anything?"
"It was a girl."
Raven looked up at me, "Why do you say that?"
"Are you doubting my skills?"
Raven rolled her eyes at that, "Just tell me already."
I pursed my lips to stifle the laugh that was trying its best to breakthrough.
My 'great sister' wanted to know how I solved a murder...
I wonder why...?
I hope it's not because of the officer who worked with me on the case...
I mean, I wouldn't blame her.
He was handsome, very handsome.
That was when Raven shot at me the 'death glare'. I always wondered how she did it, it was a look that could make people shudder in fear. I immediately composed myself and cleared my throat in an attempt to ease the tense atmosphere.
It did not work.
"Well, while performing the autopsy of the victim, I picked up a scent that came from the body's neck. Aside from the stench, a faint scent of cologne was still noticed. When I was looking around the crime scene, I stumbled upon a chord that gave of a strong scent similar to the one I smelled on the body. The forensics called me yesterday, they found the daughter's fingerprints on both ends of the chord. I reported her right after." I explained.
I guess having Hypersomnia wasn't that bad after all...
"Now that I think back on it when I asked her if maintaining the apartment was an easy job, she started telling about the junk she had collected and how it was always a mess. At some point, she said she was glad she put the dusty old chord to some use. She tensed right after that, then changed the topic. That was odd, so I had kept my options open."
My Twin, Raven Winter. Her condition is way more useful than mine. I mean Photographic memory is not as lame as it sounds.
We sat in the cozy living room of our family estate, going through the client requests we got throughout the week.
"Let's take a break. We can call the ten people we decided on tomorrow."
I nodded in response.
Dropping the file on the table in front of me, I got up and strode toward down a hallway that led to a bedroom at the end.
"Anna?" I whispered as I opened the room door.
My eyes softened and my heart melted at the sight that met my eyes.
Anna sleeping with her head down on her desk. Walking closer I noticed she was making a card that said 'the best detectives ever!' with pink and silver glitter all over it. It smelled a little like coffee and a lot like glue.
I gently picked her up and placed her on the bed. Raven walked into the room, about to say something. I shushed her before she could and pointed toward Anna who laid in bed, all tucked in.
Raven softly smiled at the scene and walked over to her, placing a soft kiss on her forehead, "I love you."
I did the same and we both quietly left the room.
"Can we order pizza?"
"Sure. I want garlic bread too."
Just then, my phone vibrated.
It was from Bella.
Bella was calling me.
At nine at night.
Why?
"Hello? Bella?"
"Ah, William! Um... are you free?"
Huh?
"Yes, why?"
"Can you come over? I need to tell you something important, I can't tell you over the phone. Please?"
"Um..."
I looked over at my sister who raised her brows.
"Go on! But no funny business." She whispered.
I frowned at her, "O-okay! I will be there in fifteen minutes."
"Great! Bye!"
"Bye..."
What just happened?
-
The streets were lit by the dim street lights. It was quiet and empty, not a single soul was out.
Walking down the street I smelled a strong smell... something that smelled like...
Roses?
"Flowers for sale sir! Would you like one?"
It was an old man who sat behind a flower stall filled with roses.
I stood there scanning the stall, until one my eye.
A beautiful bouquet of light pink tinted roses.
Bella would love that...
Paying the man ten dollars for the flowers, I picked my bouquet and skipped over to her place.
What does she want to tell me...?
Did she sound... blank?
I hope it's nothing serious...
Thoughts and scenarios flooded my mind, the strong scent of freshly plucked roses did not help.
In no time I had reached the front porch of Faith's residence.
I rang the bell and waited for someone to open the door, which... did not happen...
I rang the bell again, no reply...
Was she in the washroom?
I peeped through one of the windows that open up to the front porch,
Why is it dark inside?
I don't like this...
I slowly turned the handle of the main door, to find it open.
Now my heart rate was spiking up.
Taking a step in, "Bella! Why is it so dark?"
My shout slightly echoed through the soulless walls of the room.
The living room was as it always was, with the couches at one side of the house with the television, on the other side was a rocking chair placed between plants. Helen loved the vibes she got from her plants; she wouldn't part with them even if we were to trade the world for it.
The main door opened directly to the dining table; it was placed in the middle of the room.
I tried my best to convince myself that this was all just my mind playing tricks on me, that I was just being ridiculous for thinking something happened.
All my efforts fell apart when I picked up on a certain scent,
the scent of blood.
Reaching my hands toward the switchboard, I turned the lights on.
Surprisingly only one light worked, the one right above the dining table.
But that was all I needed...
Bella's limp body laid there on her back just beside the dining table. Her skin was turning to a faint blue shade and her once twinkling eyes looked lifeless. There was a huge depression on one side of her head, and about a few feet away sat a blood-soaked hammer. Blood flowed endlessly from her head, the carpet draining the red liquid by the minute.
No...
Why...?
My knees buckled as I fell to the floor.
My bouquet falling beside me.
Who did this?
Why her?
I slowly crawled toward her, "Bella? Please, Talk to me..." I whispered to her.
My vision blurred from the tears threatening to break free.
911.
I had to tell someone.
I quickly fished my phone from my pocket and dialed the emergency number.
"Hello? This is 911, What's your emergency?"
"Please send an ambulance and one batch of dispatch officers down here. You can track phones, right?"
"I am sorry sir, but what the emergency?"
"M-my friend was killed in her house. Please s-send someone."
"The dispatch officers are on their way. Can you please identify yourself?"
Silence.
I was so caught up with the scene in front of me, that I guess I forgot the possibility of the killer still being here, with me...
Right now, I was staring at a hooded figure, who was peering at the scene in the house through a window with a smile plastered over his face. I smile so psychotic and filled with what looked like satisfaction that it drove me around the bend.
He wore a black hoodie with black pants, his face was hidden behind a shadow formed by his hood. Only his mouth was visible, his perfectly lined pearly white teeth with one tooth chipped a bit at the end, was on full display.
"Hello? Sir? Are you still there?"
It was him.
"Sir please identify yourself. Sir?"
He did it.
"Sir?"
He did this to her...
"Sir? Are you alright?"
I am gonna kill him...
