the male felt the car come to a complete stop and opened his eyes, he looked outside and it seemed like a completely different world.
the trees had bright leaves, some fell with the harsh winds, but they were beautiful and vibrant nonetheless. back at his home, the trees were poorly kept, the sun didn’t shine properly and there wasn’t proper treatment available for them.
“we only have an hour left until we are at the house,” his mother informed him, and kane was shocked,he didn’t think he dozed off for that long, maybe he was more tired than his body let on.
“we are going to have a cup of tea, you can have a look around if you want,” his dad offered and kane nodded, it was clear that he chose the second option when he opened the car door and jumped out of it.
the gravel dipped around his feet, and he went back into the car for his camera, he wants to show tabiki everything.
“don’t go too far, and be back in ten!” his father called out of the open window. kane didn’t give a verbal answer, but instead stuck his thumbs up.
he walked around aimlessly, not really knowing what to do or where to go.
he saw some human families around and smiled at them. he was usually shy, but wanted to do something, maybe turn his shyness around while in the new environment.
“sorry,” he said, going up to them. “do you know any place near where i can take photos?” he asked, holding the camera which was around his neck up slightly.
“there is a nice stream which connects to a waterfall just down that hill,” the teenage girl said, and kane followed her pointing finger.
“thanks, that’s amazing!” he said, showing them an eye smile.
“are you new to town?” the mother asked, starting a new conversation.
“yeah, i am actually just taking a break before we go for another hour,”
“oh? where are you coming from? a lot of new people have been stopping around,” the adult asked again, and kane debated for a second before deciding to tell them the truth.
“i’m actually from the ‘monster’ region, and with the new law i’m going to start human school,” he laughed nervously at the strange looks he was getting. he couldn't really read their expression.
“you don’t look weird? are you human and just got lost in that place?” the mother asked before her eyes widened and she leaned into him.
“were you kidnapped? do you need help?” she whispered, as if she didn’t want her own children hearing her.
“no,no, i’m fine,” he laughed. “my parents are over there, my birth parents” he pointed over to the two adults who were now outside and sitting on a bench together with a cup of tea between their laps.
“i’m a yokai, a nekomata to be exact,” he explained, already knowing it won’t be the first time he will be needing to do that. he continued when he got no response.
“i can turn into a two-tailed cat, basically,” he sighed out.
“well, i guess that’s okay,” the father spoke up for the first time, “just don’t talk about it in front of kids, their impressionable,” he said before the group left. it left kane stunned.
he took a deep breath and went to where he was directed at the start of the conversation.
they were right, just down a small, yet steep, hill was a clear river, which swerved through rocks, kane couldn’t see the end of the river, but could vaguely see the diip it would take to turn to a waterfall.
he lifted his camera up to his eye and took the lens off, he snapped a few photos before letting it fall down on his chest once again.
“i should probably get back to them,” he said to himself, struggling to get up the hill in boots.
he made it back just as his parents were making their way into the car to get back onto the road. his mother was in the passenger seat and his father was going to be driving for the remainder of the trip.
"are you ready to be on the road again?" his dad asked as he steered out of the parking space they were in.
"i mean i don't have much if a choice now," kane laughed and rolled down his window, letting the cool air hit his face and blow his hair back.
"it was a rhetorical question, obviously, " his dad laughed and mimicked kane by rolling his window down. the only female of the group already had her window down, and had her hand partially outside.
