If you've a free moment or two,

I have a gripe to share with you.

There is something that bothers me,

And that is the community.

Specifically gossip and strife,

Which supplements suburban life;

All that whispered, scathing chat,

Of who did this and who said that.

In cafes, shops or on the street,

In sitting rooms perched on a seat.

There these parrots are connected,

To discuss all they've collected.

"I heard Mrs Kent's boy Mark,

Was kissing some girl in the park!"

"And goodness me have you seen Claire?

What has she done to her poor hair?"

But half baked tales are not enough,

And hot opinions soon flare up:

"I never liked his attitude,

I've always thought him very rude!"

Through pursing lips and furrowed brows,

With shaking heads and tuts and scowls,

Each one of them remarks in turn,

On something not of their concern.

Eventually when all is spent,

The gossipers disband, content.

But even though they've had their fill,

They snoop and interfere yet still.

Like vultures in a circled flight,

Their beady eyes search day and night,

For news to stick their noses in,

And share with their judgemental kin.

One busybody on the bus,

Observes a child making a fuss.

"You can't have sweets," the mother scolds,

And in the gossip's mind unfolds:

"That rude young child, just look at that!

The parent can't control her brat!"

The gossip will now share this view,

Despite the fact it's quite untrue.

These rumours passed around unchecked,

Most of which are incorrect,

Are nothing short of pointless slime,

A needless, joyless waste of time.

And so to anyone who might,

Indulge in such unneeded tripe,

I have a parting thought for you:

Have you got nothing else to do?
