“You cannot go after Scarecrow by yourself. It’s stupid, reckless, and dangerous.” Bruce crossed his arms, glaring sternly.
“Bruce, I have to. I’m probably the only person he won’t attack out the gate.”
“Yes, but you’re getting too caught up in this, Jason. It’s not your responsibility.”

Jason was currently suiting up in the Batcave. He was strapping in as many knives as he could hold, again trying to make a show of his preparedness. Bruce was nothing short of livid. Jason had gone AWOL for two days, and then suddenly he came barrelling into the Manor and straight to the study. Everyone was trying to talk sense into him, but he was too lost in his new personal mission.

“If we keep going at this rate we’ll never get Scarecrow behind bars. Plus, you saw that kid’s face, what if he turns into a statistic?”
“Jason, I understand. But this is not your responsibility.”
“Am I supposed to be a hero or not? You asked me to come help, and now you’re stopping me from helping!”
“I asked you here to be a hero who helps when they are called on. Not one who runs off headlong into danger without discussing the purpose.”
“I am trying to save someone from Scarecrow. There’s your fucking purpose.”
“You’re saving a villain from another villain. The number remains the same.”
“Don’t give that shit, Bruce! You can’t stop me!”

He was right, Bruce couldn’t stop him. And as much as it bothered him to admit it, he could absolutely understand Jason’s anger. It was right within his realm of justice and there really was no convincing him to not pursue it. Bruce could only hope that Crane wouldn’t see Jason coming.

Crane hadn’t seen him coming, especially at his new lab, hidden within the bowels of an old historic building in Crime Alley. The building was actively used by a bail bondsman but the basement and boiler room had been empty for some time. They were only accessible through a door in the alley, down a few steps; impossible to see unless you were looking for it. Jason avoided the scum in the crowded alley, surprised that no one tried to give him a hard time, being dressed in his suit and all. They seemed uninterested in him, even less so when he made his way down the steps. The door was unlocked and the inside was lit rather nicely and looked somewhat clean. Jason felt uneasy at that observation, heading further into the space. There was a step down into what he could assume was the boiler room, or rather the furnace room. Jason recognized that old coal furnaces, his grade school had one in their basement. Just the historical atmosphere Scarecrow would choose for his new hideout. He passed through a door into the basement store room. Jonathan’s eyes shot up to look at him over the rim of his glasses, perched on the end of his nose.

“You look ancient.”
“That is very rude.” He looked genuinely bothered by that. “Can I help you?”
“Who’s McKinnley?”
“Oh, lord, Jason. You never were good at games. “ Jonathan tossed his glasses onto his desk.
“I’m too pissed for games right now. First of all, since when did you have kids? And second, what the fuck did you do to that kid?”
“Who, Zennaire? He disappointed me, honestly. Giving away my hideout like that-”
“So, what? Now you become the new Miss Keeny? Abuse the kid who doesn’t deserve it?”
“Ah, righteous indignation. You relate to Zennaire so you come here to reprimand me. Childish, really. Zennaire is truly pathetic. You’re much better than him.” Crane smiled slyly.
“You’re not backing me into a corner, Jonathan. I’m taking you to GCPD where they can decide where to send your ass.”

Jonathan laughed wholly and deeply at the declaration, standing carefully and still shaking from laughter.

“Jason, you sweet fool. I have enough fear toxin in this building to drive the entirety of Crime Alley insane. Droves of criminals clawing their eyes out, or you turn tail and leave just like before-”

A solid smack rang through the room as Jason’s fist connected with Jonathan’s nose. The villain tumbled backwards into a shelf and Jason vaulted over the desk. He dropped to a knee and went to land another blow, he hissed as his fist connected with something sharp and metallic. His instinctive recoil gave Jonathan the opening to jam the knife into Jason’s abdomen and gain the upper hand. He straddled Jason’s waist, using his weight to press the knife in further. Jason’s hands grasped at Jonathan’s, gritting his teeth to hold in a shout of pain.

“Youfucking bastard.” He hissed out.
“Consider it payback for my fucking nose.” Blood dripped from his face, landing on Jason’s cheek.
“What now? We just lay here while you twist the knife around?”
“Here’s the plan: I withdraw and leave, you wait fifteen minutes and then you can come after me.”

Jonathan didn’t give him time to respond before pushing off of him and yanking the knife out. Jason yelled, grabbing at his stomach and cursing loudly. He rolled onto his side, trying to power past the pain to tail Crane as he headed towards the door.

Jason’s voice grew more faint as Jonathan made his way into the alley, he wiped his nose with his lab coat collar and grimaced at it. He tossed it to some homeless vagrant and glanced behind him at the slam of a door. Jason was persistent, if nothing else and Jonathan sighed. This was going to be uglier than he had wanted. He fished a small canister from his pocket, flipping the safety nozzle open and readying himself as Jason approached quickly. Just as Jason reached for him, Jonathan spun on his heel, spraying his adversary square in the face with fear toxin. Jason coughed and sputtered, his eyes singing at the chemical smell. The sparse conversations in the alley screeched to a halt, people covering their mouths with their shirts and scattering to avoid inhalation. Jason fanned the yellowish cloud away and jogged after Crane, who’d made some headway down the street. The gas was slow to set into his system, Jonathan knew, so he hurried down the steps of a subway entrance. He had to put enough space between them, which he could easily do in the crowd that always gathered in the terminals here. Sure enough, it didn’t take long for Jason to lose sight of Crane. His vision was beginning to blur and the crowd of people made it hard to discern who was what. Jason cursed and kicked a nearby trash can over, startling a few bystanders. Backtracking to fresher air, Jason could hear the squeal of tires before the Batmobile came into view.

“I can’t tell.” His breathing was laboured.
“Get in the car, there’s an antidote back at the Cave.”

Jason settled into the passenger seat and leaned it back to lay down. He rolled down the window some and covered his face with his arm. His eyes hurt and he could feel his chest tightening uncomfortably as Batman took side roads back towards Wayne Manor.

“I tried to tell you not to go. Scarecrow is clever, he’s always a step ahead.”
“Don’t patronize me, Bruce.”
“It’s not-”
“It is. Shut up.” Jason bit out.

Bruce grit his teeth and chose to sulk in silence for the remainder of the ride. Bruce was thankful for the Batmobile’s agility and the dedication of his fellow Gothamites to get the hell out the way. Jason wasn’t hallucinating just yet, but his heart was hammering in his chest and his eyes were on fire. He could feel the burning tingle in the back of his throat which explained the disgusting amount of saliva in his mouth. He’d already chugged two bottles of water when Bruce had taken the third away half way through. Bruce reached over to push Jason back into his seat. He could actually feel Jason’s heart in his chest and the force of his breathing. It was unnatural and, frankly, frightening. Bruce pressed a button on the dash, a bright red light blinked in response. He pressed the gas harder as Alfred’s face appeared on the small video monitor.

“Alfred, I need you to prepare an antidote for the fear toxin, quickly.”
203Please respect copyright.PENANAce3BT4VMuu
Alfred sensed the urgency, his eyes widening before he disappeared towards the Batcave. Bruce swung the Batmobile through the back gate of the Manor and into the open garage. He bolted around to the passenger side as Jason nearly tumbled onto the ground. Jason cursed and scrubbed at his eyes and Bruce steadied him, starting for the medical area. Alfred was fully prepared and ready as Bruce tried to maneuver Jason into a chair. He was responding enough to hold his arm out towards Alfred wordlessly. He flinched as Bruce pressed his fingers under his jaw, counting his pulse. He tried not to move as Alfred administered the antidote, the sensation of the needle amplified by his panic. He could barely make out the form of Jason the Second and Damian entering the room before he covered his eyes, grimacing as his vision seemed to warble. Bruce shushed them quickly and whispered directions. They ran off and returned quickly with ice packs and washcloths which Bruce carefully tucked behind Jason’s back and across his shoulders.
Alfred posted up beside him, pouring himself a cup of tea as he monitored the symptoms. Bruce had donned his cowl again and was back out to the field. The young ones had all gone back upstairs and so a quiet moment ensued. Jason’s breathing was actively relaxing and his heart rate was beginning to return to a normal pace. He claimed the symptoms were waning, but Alfred was too experienced to be fooled. Just as the toxin took longer to act, so would the antidote. The quietness was a trained farce as told by the fear in Jason’s eyes as they stayed staring at a far corner of the room. Alfred chose not to comment out of fear of inciting panic. So instead he carefully nudged a bottle of water towards his patient.

Jason had woken feeling disgusting. His shirt was stuck to him from dried sweat and his head was sore. He pushed off of the bed he was in and fumbled to find his phone. It was almost noon, and there was a new text message shining at him.

“Hope you’re well. :) Meet me at the corner of Jones and Middleman.”

He had a nagging suspicion that might be from Jonathan.
203Please respect copyright.PENANA7PLa0nlArX
“Hope you’re well.” Jason mocked aloud.
203Please respect copyright.PENANAwxLHkoChPz
Yeah, he was well. He’d only spent a night trying not to scream and half a day passed out asleep. If Alfred hadn’t been there with him, Jason wasn’t sure how he would have reacted. Seeing his long dead father watching him from the corner with a smirk on his face. God, he’d love to see Jason screaming and sobbing in fear. Unfortunately for daddy dearest, he wasn’t nearly as frightening as looking away for a second and coming back to see Crane’s kid dead on the floor. Zennaire, if he was remembering the name, very dead, beginning to decompose, eyes open and face staring Jason in the soul. That was scary.
This was going to be tricky, to say the least. He was trapped in a random bedroom in Wayne Manor, a home inhabited by a great detective and his many tiny detectives. How the hell was he going to get downstairs undetected and unquestioned? He contemplated jumping out a window but decided that might be a little extreme. The other Jason met him on the stairs right away.
203Please respect copyright.PENANAggh7alzDjE
“Oh. Shouldn’t you go lay down?”
“Uh, I have to pee.” Smooth.
“Fourth door down on the left.”

Good start. Same floor, different room. Jason stared at himself in the mirror, thinking. If he could just formulate some kind of story, a good excuse… He cussed under his breath and straightened his shirt. This was dumb! He didn’t have to explain himself to anyone. He’d march downstairs, walk into the Batcave, get his shit, and go. Simple as. No one seemed to question it as he pressed random keys on the grand piano in the study. It… It had been a white key, right? Were they called keys? Eventually one of them worked and the bookshelf slid out from the wall. Jason made sure to pull it closed behind him and hurried around the medical area, collecting his gear and yanking on his suit. If he could make it out quick enough, he could put enough distance between him and the Bat. He hurried to the garage and picked a bike, speeding off into town. Jones and Middleman was tucked into a series of dead end roads in the Narrows. It was an ugly area full of rats and drugs. Almost every building there was practically condemned, perfect hideouts for ne'er do wells like Crane. A woman stopped him as he approached the building directly on the corner.

“Pretty nice bike there, baby. A little far from home?”
“Very. Take it. I don’t care.”
203Please respect copyright.PENANA6ckBnMDvrU
He tossed the keys at her and shouldered past her and her two goons. Finding Crane wasn’t difficult, seeing as how everyone was gathered on the opposite side of the building. Jason reached behind him as he came up to the door. It didn’t sound like anyone was inside so he didn’t need to run in gun-a-blazing. He clicked off the safety, hands at the ready as he shoved the door open. This was a much smaller room than before, just enough space for a table. Jonathan sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. He was sitting on an old dining chair that looked ready to snap, the light was atrocious, barely any sunlight could make it through a small, broken window next to the table. If he had looked amused before, he looked near furious this time. Roughly casting his glasses aside, he turned sharply in the chair as it creaked.

“Can I help you?”
“Make this easy, Jonathan.”
“Oh, Mary and Joseph, Jason. I am trying to work!”
“Work on what? Some new harebrained scheme to plunge Gothamites into petrified subservience to the all powerful Scarecrow!” Jason mocked him theatrically.
“Very mature, Jason. You know if I didn’t know any better I’d think you missed me. Unfortunately, this isn’t college and I do have things to do besides you.”
“You’re going to jail, Jonathan. You crossed a line.”
“You can’t erase our past, love.”
“I’m talking about your son. The one you beat the shit out of? Remember him?”

Jonathan groaned and rolled his eyes, standing slowly.

“Jason, we need to talk about your saviour complex. Your father was terrible, I know! I remember. You did you best to be daddy’s favourite and he beat you anyway.”
“This isn’t about me!”
“Don’t interrupt! Zennaire was similar to you, always trying to be good! But he only ever got in my goddamned way. Just as troublesome as his stupid mother.”
“So, what? You force him to do your dirty work and take the fall and then you beat him on the side? Like a fucking hobby?” Jason pushed Jonathan away as he stepped closer.
“Why do you care! Honestly! What does it matter to you if I do? What harm does it do you if I just kill him?”
“Because that was me. Because you are becoming exactly what my father was!”

Jason raised his gun again, the barrel scratching against Jonathan’s forehead. His silver eyes grew wide for a moment before turning dark.

The side of the gun made an audible crack as it slammed into the side of Jonathan’s head. He hit the ground and groaned, his vision swimming from the sudden strike. Jason wedged the communicator (he’d snagged one from the Batcave) between his ear and shoulder as Batman’s gravelly voice came through. He shouted out his location before Bats could scold him for running off. Jonathan felt at his temple, his fingertips stained with blood. Jason had the gun pointed at his face, eyes trained on him as Batman called in his coordinates to Gordon. Jonathan turned, laying on his back and sighing in defeat.

Things could have gone better. The moment Barry texted him to “maybe don’t come up here right now” he knew something was about to go down. It was bad enough he had to take the damn bus and train all the way to D.C., and then had to change into his uniform in a gas station bathroom. The Hall of Justice was eerily quiet, and the Batmobile was already parked in the hangar. Jason was getting angrier by the second, staggering as Barry zipped right in front of him.
203Please respect copyright.PENANA60MPNO0y5p
“Dude, Bats is already here and things aren’t going well.” He spoke in hushed whispers.
“In his favour or mine?”
“Both. This has the whole League all torn up. They had to narrow the meeting down to just us.”
203Please respect copyright.PENANAWvmBxeU8uu
“Us” meant the “big dogs” in Barry’s language. Of course, Superman would side with Batman. Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter would likely side with Jason. And then Barry would nervously toe the line and ultimately not pick a side. Jason couldn’t blame him for that, they could all be scary when they had passionate opinions. Barry stuck close to Jason’s side as they entered the conference room. Everyone was silently looking between each other, almost daring anyone to start the debate. Jason tossed the file he’d prepared to the middle of the table.
203Please respect copyright.PENANANnmhtpJxyb
“Put Scarecrow in Blackgate.”
“Gotham is not your jurisdiction, though.” Superman spoke softly but firmly.
“He hasn’t stayed in Arkham for a week consecutively. He’s a lost cause-“
“But it's not your jurisd-“
“I don’t give a shit, Clark! He’s got a fucking monopoly on hideouts! He’s got a rat in the GCPD, now. He’s working like crazy on some new bullshit-“
“How do we know this for sure?” Wonder Woman asked.
“He gassed me three days ago. It kicked in in less than twenty minutes. It should have taken near forty-five.”

Barry shifted, distressed by the assessment. Martian Manhunter cleared his throat.

“Perhaps Scarecrow has grown too comfortable in the Joker’s shadow. He is working while Batman is distracted.”
“Batman, what do you believe should be done?” Wonder Woman prompted.

The Dark Knight shifted, breathing in a sigh.

“I understand this case… bothers you. But, I asked you to help keep things under control while I dealt with the Joker. You’re getting wrapped up in this-“
“Because he’s getting away with it.”
“Because of a personal agenda. You’re emotionally attached to the circumstances therein-“
“This isn’t about me. This is about the barely twenty-something getting smacked around and drugged by his father. Who, by the way, recently tried to rip an Arkham orderly’s throat out, with his teeth.” Wonder Woman cringed. “He needs to be behind bars, but your second chance ideals are letting him off scot free.”

There hadn’t been a decision. Jason was seething with rage, pacing the conference room and shouting obscene criticisms as Batman left.

“Crane will be placed back in Arkham Asylum… You’ve been dismissed from your duties in Gotham.”

“I understand your anger, but you must be calm.”
“I quit!” Jason shoved her hand away.
“What? Jason-“
“No, I quit! This is fucking pointless! You all just roll over and let him do the stupidest shit possible!”

He slammed the conference room doors open and stormed down the street. Not even a car to drive away with dignity, Jason found his way back around to Ivy’s apartment. He banged on the door for minutes until she finally answered, peeking past the chain lock. Her glare softened when she saw his flustered expression.

“Need to release some tension? I have my hands a but full right now but-“
“I just need somewhere to stay for the night. Maybe a couple nights. I don’t know.”
“You’re awfully jittery. Come in, have some tea.”

Ivy led Jason in and to the sofa. She had started the kettle just before and poured the water over an expensive, loose white tea. Jason deserved a little treat, she supposed. He had his head in his hands when she returned, brushing her paperwork from the coffee table and sitting cross legged on top of it. She handed him the mug of tea, whispering a “careful” as he took it and smelled it. He sipped at it a bit before setting it to the side.
203Please respect copyright.PENANAkiwFGQQv1Z
“Thanks. Sorry to bother you.”
“Wanna tell me what happened?”
“I had Scarecrow. I had him. I had proof of everything he’s done, of what he’s done to his kid. And Batman let him go.”
“That’s what he does. It's his whole second chance manifesto.”
“I know, but- Ivy the kids’ like 18. He’s been dealing with this since who knows when. You should have heard the shit Crane said-“
“Jason, can I ask you something?”

He waited in response.
203Please respect copyright.PENANAVPrDPvRoiD
“Would you say you’re this upset because you thought better of Jonathan? Because you liked him?”
“Since when is everyone in this city a therapist?”
“Since we’ve all been assigned one. Answer the question.”
Jason sighed heavily and leaned back on the sofa. “Yeah. Fine. I would. I did like Jonathan, and I knew it wouldn’t work out even back in ‘82, when we first met.”
“So then, is this about you or him?”
“I wish I knew. He reminds me of my father, now.”
“So it is about you. You wanna catch him because he’s become what you hate most.”
“Look, I can deal with villains. I’m a mercenary for hire, I’m with bad guys all the time but there’s a line. And he is that line. Once you go there, you can’t go back.”

Jason took back up his tea, Ivy doing the same. She finished her cup as Jason groaned, pinching at the bridge of his nose.
203Please respect copyright.PENANAhar4cABbm5
“Ivy, I fucked up big time.”
“What?”
“We had a meeting, at the Hall. They all conceded to let Batman do whatever he wanted. And I… god I fucked up.”
“Did you kill someone?”
“No, I… I told them “I’ll do it myself.””
“Jason Wilson, you did not.”
“I did.”
“What are you going to do now?”
“...I’m gonna do it.”
“What exactly is it?”
“I’m gonna kill Jonathan.”

The silence that followed was heavy as Ivy stared at him. Her green eyes were wide as saucers while Jason’s were calm, almost serene.
203Please respect copyright.PENANAR3P95pFgYq
“I- Jason- It’s not that I doubt you, you could kill him but… and I don’t blame you but-“
“I would be a villain. I would be on the run from Batman forever.”
“Yeah. You would. And trying to get out of Gotham afterwards would be near suicide.”
“Can’t die, remember?”

They didn’t talk much more about it. Ivy knew him well enough, he won’t back down. Instead, she offered him the other side of the bed.

“I don’t think you’ve ever spent the night. On your own will, of course.”

Jason muttered a “shut up” and smiled. He couldn’t believe what he was doing right now. He was on the subway headed towards Perry, where he was going to break into Wayne Manor and get the remainder of his belongings back. Why break in? Well, because Batman isn’t stupid, he knows Jason will do something reckless (like this). And there’s no doubt that the rest of the Justice League has already told him about his outburst at the Hall. There’s no doubt, then, that he wasn’t going to let Jason just waltz in for his stuff. It was broad daylight, middle of the day. Everyone was home, Jason could see the cars in the driveway. He jumped when a horn honked behind him on the roadside. It was Jason Todd, on his bike. He flipped up his helmet visor.
203Please respect copyright.PENANAz70iednff0
“What’cha doin’?” He smiled knowingly.
“I need my stuff.”
“Alright. Where’s it at?”
“The Cave. Medical side.”
“Get on. I can sneak you around the security.”
“Just like that?”
“Hell yeah, dude. It’s gonna piss Bruce off so bad.” His smile was wide as Jason perched himself on the back edge of the bike’s seat.
203Please respect copyright.PENANAHDa4FE1Yuv
It was a welcome change of plan, sneaking in this way was a cinch. Todd got him inside the Cave in minutes. He even picked a petty fight with Damian so Jason could sneak through medical and locate his cache. He pulled on his suit, grabbing all the gear he could carry and made a motion to Todd. He snuck out the same way they came in, followed shortly by Todd.
